Chronicles: Medieval is an in-development sandbox RPG from Raw Power Games, planned for Steam Early Access in early 2027. Its announced mix of political and economic simulation, character-level combat, battlefield command and social advancement invites comparisons to Crusader Kings and Mount & Blade—but those are useful shorthand, not proof that it matches either series. Tom Hardy narrates the announcement trailer; players create their own protagonist.
What is Chronicles: Medieval?
Chronicles: Medieval is a medieval sandbox RPG in development at Raw Power Games. The studio describes a Europe-inspired setting spanning the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, where players can pursue combat, trade, diplomacy, politics and advancement through society. The stated ambition is a world with its own political and economic activity, rather than a setting that exists only to respond to the player. Raw Power Games’ developer diaries describe events such as sieges and caravan attacks as forces that can affect the wider world.
Lead Producer Sam Millen summed up that design intent in Developer Diary #1: “You are not the centre of that world. You are a part of it, and what you do within it is all up to you.” It is a description of the studio’s goal, not evidence that the finished game will simulate every consequence or support unrestricted action.
How do its politics and combat fit together?
The Crusader Kings comparison points to the advertised political relationships and changing conditions around the player; the Mount & Blade comparison points to direct fighting, leading troops and taking part in battles. The studio’s announced concept puts those kinds of activity in one sandbox, but it does not establish feature parity, final quality or a direct combination of either series.

Explore from an overworld map
The official Q&A calls the top-down overworld the “Exploration Map.” It is the strategic view for moving through the world, distinct from the advertised direct combat and battlefield action. The Q&A and announcement materials describe character creation, fighting for land and leading armies.
Fight, command and build an army
Developer diaries describe battles, unit deployment and command, recruiting and maintaining an army, and gaining experience and promoting units. These systems could connect a personal rise through society to larger military ambitions: the character fights, while their influence and army can matter at a broader scale. The diaries identify the material as in progress, so these are announced design elements—not a verified account of how they play in a release build.

Choose a path through society
Raw Power Games presents combat as one possible pursuit alongside trade, diplomacy, politics and social advancement. The premise is not simply to win battles: a player may seek influence through other routes in a simulated medieval world. The studio has not established that every path, interaction or outcome will be available in the final game.
Is it a historical simulation?
The game draws inspiration from the era of the Hundred Years’ War, but the developers say they are not making a strict historical recreation or direct simulation of that conflict. Official material also says combat direction draws on historical European martial arts sources. That supports describing the historical inspiration; it does not establish historical accuracy or demonstrate how combat feels in practice. The developer diaries are the studio’s source for those design descriptions.

When does Chronicles: Medieval come out?
The current target for Steam PC Early Access is early 2027, according to the Raw Power Games game page and the newer update in the official developer diaries. Older text on the official FAQ and announcement page still refers to 2026; the newer update says the team moved its Early Access target to early 2027 after reconsidering development goals. Treat early 2027 as a plan, not a guaranteed launch date.
Console versions are planned after PC, but the studio has not announced their timing. The game remains in development, and the official Q&A says features may change. Its answer about co-op describes a future vision for the full release after Early Access; it is not a promise that co-op will be available at Early Access launch or by a specific date.

What does Tom Hardy have to do with the game?
Tom Hardy narrates the announcement trailer, as its official page states. The announced game instead asks players to create their own character; Hardy’s narration does not mean he plays the protagonist or appears as a character.

Raw Power Games has shared a premise, design goals and work-in-progress systems, but there is no basis here for treating Chronicles: Medieval as a playable, independently tested game. The available official descriptions do not establish performance, final feature availability or how closely the finished experience will realize the sandbox ambition. For current release information, use the studio’s game page and its Steam listing.
