Which option makes sense depends first on the game you want to mod, then on the workflow and paid benefits you actually want.
What the “$90 gap” actually compares
Nexus Mods announced US prices of $8.99 monthly or $89.99 annually for Premium, before tax, effective June 17, 2024. That annual figure is the source of the rounded “$90” shorthand. It is a dated announced price, not a guaranteed 2026 checkout total: Nexus says local currency is used for new subscriptions where available and applicable local taxes may be added, so check the price shown for your region before subscribing.
Nexus Mods says its mods remain free. Premium is a membership, not a fee required to access or download the mod catalog. CurseForge also offers an optional membership. Steam Workshop, by contrast, has no single universal Workshop subscription price: it is a Steamworks feature integrated separately by game developers, who control how their games use it.

Start with the game you want to mod
Do not choose by comparing platform-wide catalog totals or assuming every game is available everywhere. The relevant question is whether the game supports the platform and the particular mods or content you want. Steam Workshop is especially dependent on the game: a developer must integrate it, and the developer determines how players browse, install, and update content. The official Steamworks documentation describes both ready-to-use workshops, which allow broad community uploads, and curated workshops, where the developer exercises tighter control.

Nexus Mods and CurseForge also vary by game. Check the game’s listing and the mod’s own instructions before installing, and verify compatibility with your game version and other mods. No comparable official benchmark establishes that one of these three services has the largest overall catalog or the best cross-game compatibility.
Compare the installation and update workflow
Steam Workshop
Where a game has integrated Workshop support, players can subscribe to content through Steam. Steamworks says the game can then receive subscribed items and keep them updated, but the exact behavior depends on the game’s implementation. A Workshop subscription is therefore not a promise that every title handles installation, load order, conflicts, or updates identically.

CurseForge
CurseForge says its app offers one-click installation, mod management, and updates for supported games. It also says it scans and moderates mods. Those are platform descriptions, not independent test results or a guarantee that every mod is safe, compatible, or free of problems. Follow the game- and mod-specific installation guidance when troubleshooting.
Nexus Mods
Nexus Mods offers Vortex as a mod manager and says neither Vortex nor mods will be put behind a paywall. If you are considering Vortex on Linux, Nexus’s app FAQ says Linux is not currently a supported platform and compatibility can vary; do not assume the Windows workflow applies unchanged.

What the optional memberships buy
Nexus Mods Premium
The published US annual and monthly prices are membership prices, not mod-access charges. The quoted dollar amounts were announced in 2024, before tax; current regional checkout terms may differ. Consider Premium only for the membership benefits you want, rather than treating it as the cost of using Nexus Mods at all.
CurseForge Premium
CurseForge’s Premium page lists $2.99 per month or $30 per year and describes ad-free use, instant downloads, personalized app features, and creator support. These are the platform’s advertised benefits. Compare them with the current checkout offer and your own use, rather than reading the difference between membership prices as a direct measure of service quality or value.

The listed annual prices differ by $59.99 before tax, but that arithmetic is not a like-for-like savings figure: the memberships offer different benefits, and Workshop is not a comparable subscription plan.

CurseForge documents premium mods for ARK: Survival Ascended as a game-specific system, not a general charge for CurseForge’s wider library and not the same purchase as CurseForge Premium. Its support article lists author-selectable price tiers of $2, $5, $10, and $15. For PC purchases, the article describes the distribution after specified deductions as 50% to the author, 25% to Studio Wildcard, 5% to Tebex, and the remainder—about 20%—to CurseForge.

The same support article says a rule requiring original assets for premium mods classified as custom cosmetics is announced to take effect November 1, 2026. As of October 4, 2026, that date is in the future; it should not be treated as an already-effective rule.
Which should you use?
- Choose Steam Workshop when your game supports it and its in-game or Steam workflow suits how you want to install and maintain content. Check the game’s own implementation rather than assuming Workshop behaves the same across titles.
- Choose Nexus Mods when the mods you want are hosted there or its available tools fit your setup. You can use its mods without buying Premium.
- Choose CurseForge when your game and desired content are supported and you prefer the app’s advertised installation and update workflow. Treat Premium as an optional bundle of membership benefits, not as a prerequisite for all mods.
- Evaluate ARK paid mods separately if you play ARK: Survival Ascended: those are individual game-specific purchases, distinct from a CurseForge Premium subscription.
There is no evidence in the platform material cited here for a universal winner on safety, compatibility, satisfaction, or catalog size. Make the decision at the game-and-mod level, then decide whether a particular paid membership is worth its own benefits to you.
