A VR room-scale boundary is a visual warning around the real space you have cleared for play—not a physical barrier or a guarantee that your room is safe. Meta calls its current feature Boundary (and older materials call it Guardian); “Chaperone” is often used for SteamVR’s boundary system. The setup details below are specific to Meta’s documented guidance, not a claim that every platform works the same way.
What does VR Chaperone or Boundary do?
In Meta’s system, you trace an outer perimeter around unobstructed floor space. The headset then derives a rectangular play area inside that outline. As your head or controllers approach the play area’s edge, a translucent grid appears; the passthrough view may also fade in so you can see more of the room. Meta’s Boundary documentation describes this as a way to mark the area in which you can safely move.
The traced perimeter and the resulting rectangular play area are related, but they are not identical. Set the perimeter based on the actual clear space available, and leave enough room within it for arm swings, controllers, and movement. Meta’s guidance does not establish one universal buffer distance.
How to prepare and configure a safe play area
- Clear the whole activity area. Remove floor-level clutter and other obstacles, and avoid uneven surfaces such as stairs or ramps. Do not trace a boundary through walls or beyond space you can actually use. Meta’s safety guidance advises preparing the play area before using VR.
- Choose a mode that fits the activity. Stationary mode is intended for compact seated or standing play with limited movement. Roomscale is for moving within a traced area, and should be chosen only when both the experience and your clear space support that movement. Meta’s Boundary documentation describes these modes.
- Follow the headset’s on-screen prompts. The exact consumer menu sequence depends on headset model and software. Use the current instructions for your model rather than assuming older headset setup steps apply.
- Keep play and interactions inside the configured area. Treat the grid as a cue to stop, reorient, and return to the cleared space. App designers are also advised to keep content within the user’s configured play area and avoid placing close interactions near its edge. Meta’s Boundary documentation covers design guidance for stationary and roomscale setups.
How much space do you need for room-scale VR?
Meta publishes two similar, but differently framed, recommendations. Neither should be treated as a universal safety standard or a guaranteed minimum for every headset or experience.
#1 Best Overall
- PLAY ON THE MAT: The large 35 inch size allows you to play with both feet on the mat. Why step on and off the mat when you can stay within your improved Safety Zone. US Patent #10,350,488
- MINIMIZES ACCIDENTS: Improves VR game play by defining your play area and keeping you within a zone away from objects or walls. Using a tactile approach for your feet provides an extra level of safety and keeps you far enough from your guardian systems warnings and allows you to focus on your game and not the flashing boundary.
- KEEPS YOU CENTERED: Physical home centering button along with smaller north facing button provides a true physical presence while in Virtual Reality. Keeping you centered is key to great gaming.
- USE ALMOST ANYWHERE: At home, school, hotels, dorm rooms, VR arcades- any use that requires standing or room scale.
- USE WITH ALL VR SYSTEMS: Not limited to any one VR system! Provides all Virtual reality systems (with standing & room scale movement games) the benefit of centering, room awareness, direction, increased safety for longer & better game play.
| Meta guidance | Space stated | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon OS Developers design guidance | 6.5 ft by 6.5 ft (2 m by 2 m) or larger | Recommended roomscale play-area size. |
| Horizon OS Developers boundary integration guidance | 9 ft by 9 ft total space, with a 6 ft by 6 ft playable area free of obstructions | A larger room area around a clear playable area. |
For your own setup, prioritize the space that is genuinely clear and usable, then check the requirements of the specific experience. A nominal room measurement does not make furniture, cables, walls, or other obstructions safe to move through.
What happens when you cross the boundary?
The grid and passthrough are warnings intended to help you notice that you are near or leaving the configured area. If either appears, stop moving, reorient yourself, and return to the clear play space rather than continuing outside it. The boundary is software: it cannot physically stop you or ensure that you avoid a collision.

Does passthrough replace the VR boundary?
No. Passthrough can reveal parts of the physical room, but it is not a substitute for setting and respecting a boundary. Meta’s developer documentation states: “Importantly, however, neither scene nor passthrough is a substitute for the safety mechanisms provided by the boundary.” Meta’s Passthrough guidance also warns that scene features do not identify every object inside an activity space. Boundaryless experiences may not warn you when you leave the room.
Which mode should you choose?
- Choose stationary when you will be seated or standing in a compact area and the activity requires little movement.
- Choose roomscale only if you have a genuinely clear traced area and the experience’s movement fits inside it.
- Reconsider the activity if you cannot keep its required movements and interactions within the selected configuration.
Meta’s design guidance recommends supporting both stationary and roomscale configurations and avoiding required interactions outside the user’s selected setup. Meta Horizon OS Developers design guidance

What the boundary cannot guarantee
- It is not a wall, force field, or physical restraint.
- It does not guarantee that hazards have been identified or that every nearby object will be visible.
- Passthrough and scene understanding do not replace the boundary or make an uncleared room safe.
- A warning cannot prevent a collision if you keep moving after it appears.
