If you want to find or build an open-source StarCraft bot, start with BWAPI’s repository and its official documentation. BWAPI is a free, open-source C++ framework for connecting programs to StarCraft: Brood War—not a bot you can simply install and play. Its documented setup targets Brood War 1.16.1, so do not assume that a BWAPI project works with StarCraft: Remastered or a current retail installation.
What “open-source StarCraft bot” means
This guide is about StarCraft: Brood War AI projects, particularly bots built with BWAPI. BWAPI exposes game state to an AI module while withholding units lost to fog of war, according to its documentation. It is the interface and development ecosystem bots use; it is not itself a recommended opponent or a consumer-ready game mode.
A public source repository also does not guarantee a ready-to-run download. A project may require you to compile its code, install a specific runtime, and use an older game and launcher setup. Before choosing one, inspect its README, build instructions, release assets, and maintenance notes.
Where to find bots and starter resources
BWAPI’s official documentation and repository
Start with the BWAPI documentation for framework setup and the BWAPI repository for source, releases, issues, license metadata, and links to bot resources and competitions. The documented quick start builds an example AI module, places its DLL in the game’s bwapi-data/AI directory, and launches StarCraft through Chaoslauncher.

AIIDE and CoG competition resources
The competition organizer’s site points beginners to STARTcraft, a tutorial resource, and UAlbertaBot, a fully functional open-source bot intended as a starting point for competition entrants. The organizer asks people who use UAlbertaBot to make significant changes before submitting, so the competition does not receive multiple copies of the same bot.
Individual bot repositories
Look at each project’s own repository for its intended use and exact requirements. PurpleWave is a Scala bot with documented Maven build steps, dependencies, license, and repository-reported competition results. ZZZKBot states that it is designed for bot-versus-bot competition rather than human opponents, and its maintainer describes future maintenance as uncertain. These examples show why a bot’s purpose and setup matter alongside its tournament record.
Competition and ladder links
BWAPI’s documentation and repository link to AIIDE, IEEE CoG, SSCAI, and the BWAPI Bots Ladder. Use the current venue pages for rules, schedules, and results; a project’s old competition result is not a substitute for current event information.
How to choose a project
Match the bot to your goal
- Human practice: Confirm explicitly that the bot is intended to play against people. Do not assume a bot designed for tournament matches against other bots will make a suitable human opponent.
- Competition or research: Check the venue’s current rules, supported interface, maps, and submission requirements.
- Learning or modifying code: Prefer a project with understandable build instructions, a suitable license, and code you can adapt to your experience and development environment.
Check compatibility and dependencies
Record the game version, BWAPI version, operating-system assumptions, programming language, runtime, and build tools from the specific project’s instructions. BWAPI’s documented setup names Brood War 1.16.1 and Visual Studio 2017 for its C++ example. PurpleWave documents a 32-bit JDK 8 runtime, Scala 2.12.18, and Maven. These are project-specific requirements, not general recommendations for every bot.

The available setup information does not confirm compatibility with current retail versions of StarCraft or current operating systems. In particular, do not silently treat the documented Brood War 1.16.1 setup as proof of compatibility with StarCraft: Remastered.
Assess how much setup you can handle
- Look for reproducible build and run instructions, configuration details, and release artifacts if you need a binary.
- Check whether the project expects a particular legacy game installation, launcher, compiler, or runtime.
- Distinguish source code from a ready-to-run download: compiling a repository may take additional tools and configuration.
Check maintenance and licensing
Review recent commits, releases, open issues, and maintainer statements before relying on a project. For example, ZZZKBot’s repository cautions that future support and development are not intended at present; that statement can change, so consult the repository directly.
Verify the current license and its terms before reusing or redistributing code. The cited repositories list BWAPI under LGPL-3.0, PurpleWave under MIT, and ZZZKBot under GPL-3.0. Read the applicable license text and current repository metadata rather than relying only on a short label.
Read tournament results in context
Placements describe performance in a particular competition environment, with that event’s maps and rules; they do not establish that a bot is enjoyable or effective against a human. PurpleWave’s repository reports second place at AIIDE 2024 and third place at AIIDE 2025. Treat those as repository-reported placements, not as a general-purpose ranking or current benchmark.

What the documented BWAPI setup involves
BWAPI’s official setup is a specific legacy workflow, not a universal installer. It names StarCraft: Brood War 1.16.1, Visual Studio 2017 for the C++ example, the BWAPI injector, and Chaoslauncher. The quick start builds an AI module, puts the resulting DLL in bwapi-data/AI, then starts the game through Chaoslauncher. Follow the current official setup instructions for exact configuration details; the available documentation does not establish that the same process works with Remastered or current retail versions.
Current competition information
The competition organizer’s page lists an AIIDE registration deadline of September 14, 2026, and a submission deadline of October 14, 2026. Because event dates can change, verify the official event page before planning a submission.
For historical context only, a 2017 paper, “The Current State of StarCraft AI Competitions and Bots,” reports that each bot played 1,800 games at the 2016 AIIDE competition. That is not a current competition statistic. The paper also describes rules and participation for that historical period; check the current organizer’s page for present-day requirements.
