Sony has not publicly confirmed that specific project in the sources reviewed as of October 4, 2026. It remains a report about an early-stage project—not an announced product—and it should not be confused with the PlayStation Portal, Sony’s existing streaming-focused handheld.
What Bloomberg reported about a Sony PS5 handheld
Bloomberg’s November 25, 2024 report, citing unnamed people familiar with development, said Sony was in the early stages of developing a portable console intended to play PlayStation 5 games on the move. The sources described it as likely years away from launch and said Sony could still decide not to bring it to market.
That is the extent of the substantiated claim: a reported project, not a Sony announcement. “True PS5 gaming handheld” is a convenient description of what the report said the device was intended to do; it is not an official product name or a confirmed technical specification. No confirmed name, price, hardware details, PS5 game compatibility list or release date was found in the sources reviewed.
Has Sony confirmed or released the handheld?
No public confirmation or release of the reported standalone device was established as of October 4, 2026. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino spoke in June 2026 about Sony’s continuing interest in consoles and hardware that can be used in different forms and locations. In the TechRadar-reported interview, Nishino said, “My belief that a console is necessary for playing games hasn’t changed,” and said Sony wants to continue providing its own game consoles. Those are broad strategy comments; they do not verify Bloomberg’s specific report.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sony’s 2024 presentation also described an effort to “Introduce Non-PS5 Players to PlayStation via Peripherals.” That phrase concerns a general strategy, not confirmation of a standalone handheld.
How the reported device differs from PlayStation Portal
PlayStation Portal is a real Sony handheld remote player. Sony describes it as a way to play PS5 games over Wi-Fi, and it also supports cloud streaming for eligible games and subscriptions. These are streaming-based ways to play; Portal’s existence does not show that Sony has released a device that runs PS5 games locally.

Sony’s March 2026 Portal update added a 1080p High Quality mode and user-experience refinements. Sony also reported 162% year-over-year growth in Portal cloud-streaming monthly users in January 2026, and said more than 50% of Portal users were PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers at the time of the March update. Those figures describe Portal use, not demand for the reported standalone console.

|---|---|---|
| How games play | Remote play over Wi-Fi and cloud streaming for eligible games and subscriptions, according to Sony. | Bloomberg described a portable console intended to play PS5 games on the move; whether games would run locally, stream, or use both methods is not stated in the report. |

What to look for if Sony announces a device
The key question will not simply be whether it can “play PS5 games.” Sony would need to clarify how that works and what a buyer needs to use it. In particular, look for confirmed details on:

Until Sony supplies those details, the report cannot establish whether the device would compete directly with Nintendo Switch or PC handhelds on local gameplay, portability, game library or price. The Switch comparison is a reader-facing framing, not a confirmed description of Sony’s product plans.

Sony reported 56 million cumulative PS5 sell-through units as of April 30, 2024. That is historical context for the console platform, not a measure of interest in a handheld. Likewise, Portal’s reported usage growth and Premium subscriber share do not reveal how many people want a separate Sony console. No reliable named statistic directly measuring demand for the reported device was identified.
