CODE VEIN II is an ambitious action RPG built around flexible character builds, a time-travel story and partner-assisted combat. Its strongest ideas give exploration and combat room to surprise, but the experience is less consistent in its difficulty and encounter variety. A January 2026 review of the PS5 version also reported performance trouble in large outdoor areas, so that assessment should not be mistaken for a current test of every platform or patch.
What is CODE VEIN II, and where can you play it?
CODE VEIN II is a Bandai Namco Studios action RPG available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Bandai Namco’s general release date is January 30, 2026; its developer page distinguishes January 29 availability for consoles from January 30 for Steam. The dates refer to different platform availability, not a different game release.
You play as a Revenant Hunter, working with Lou MagMell to travel between past and present versions of an explorable world and try to prevent the Resurgence. Bandai Namco Entertainment America described the journey as one in which players “wield time as a weapon.”
How do the combat and build systems work?
Combat centers on draining blood from enemies to unlock skills. Blood Codes shape your build, while Jails serve as distinctive weapons and equipment. The Partner System adds a companion to combat and lets you switch between two partner combat forms, giving the system more flexibility than simply choosing a weapon and sticking with it.

The official walkthrough announcement describes seven weapon types, ranging from dual blades to a halberd. It also highlights Restorative Offering: a partner can revive a fallen Hunter by using recovered health, but is temporarily unable to assist afterward. That creates a meaningful trade-off between recovery and partner support.
Build flexibility is one of the game’s clearest strengths: Blood Codes and combat options encourage experimentation rather than locking the player into one approach. Bandai Namco also announced a Character Creator Demo with 64 save slots transferable into the full game, a useful option for players who want to spend time on appearance before starting the adventure.

What works—and what does not?
In a review of the PS5 version published January 26, 2026, TechRadar’s Rhys Wood praised the open-world exploration, Blood Code flexibility, story and characters, side content and character creator. Those strengths make the sequel appealing to players who enjoy action RPGs where build tinkering and exploring matter alongside fighting.
Wood also reported struggling performance on console in large outdoor areas. He criticized an uneven difficulty curve, similar dungeon interiors, limited enemy variety and reused bosses. His conclusion was: “If it wasn’t for the game’s shoddy performance on console, I’d say Code Vein 2 is a must-play.” That is one reviewer’s assessment of the PS5 version before release; it does not establish performance on Xbox or Steam, or how the game runs after later updates.

What is the current update and expansion status?
Bandai Namco’s official news page listed update 2.0.3, dated September 24, 2026, and shows the Mask of Idris expansion as available. The listing confirms that updates and the expansion exist, but it does not establish that the console performance concerns reported in the January PS5 review have been resolved. The cited review predates both the release and those later updates.
Which edition should you buy?
Bandai Namco Europe’s launch announcement describes these editions. Contents and availability can vary by territory, so check your local store listing before buying. The Deluxe Upgrade Pack is for owners of the base game and does not include it.

The core game is not locked behind a premium edition. Choose Standard if you only want the base adventure; consider Deluxe or Ultimate if the expansion and extras appeal to you. The Collector’s Edition is the physical-collectibles option documented in Bandai Namco Europe’s announcement, not a guarantee of current local availability.

For players drawn to build experimentation, partner combat, exploration and a time-travel premise, CODE VEIN II has a strong foundation and enough distinctive systems to be worth considering. The reservation is consistency: the independent PS5 review identified performance problems on console alongside uneven challenge and repeated encounter elements. Since that review predates launch and the later 2.0.3 listing, buyers should not treat it as a verdict on current performance; the available evidence does not provide a post-update benchmark or a comparable assessment across all three platforms.
