Sifu is a single-player kung-fu action game for players who enjoy mastering demanding combat through practice. Its defining idea is that death makes your character older, turning each attempt into a choice between learning enough to continue and spending more of a limited lifetime. Added difficulty options and a substantial Arena mode make the game more approachable and replayable than its original launch offering, but neither removes its emphasis on repetition and skill.
What kind of game is Sifu?
Developed by Sloclap, Sifu follows a revenge story through close-quarters kung-fu fights. It is designed for one player: executive producer Pierre Tarno described it as “a purely single player game” in an Xbox Wire interview published March 29, 2023. Combat rewards learning enemy patterns, choosing your position, and making use of objects in the environment rather than simply attacking as quickly as possible.

The central design question, in Tarno’s words, was “is a single lifetime enough to master kung fu?” That idea gives the game its distinctive pressure. A failed fight costs time, but the next attempt can benefit from what you learned about the encounter.
How does Sifu’s aging mechanic work?
Death advances your character’s age. The mechanic makes failure more consequential than a simple restart: you may return to an encounter with more knowledge, but you are also older as you pursue revenge. The official premise treats time as part of that pursuit, rather than as a separate score or cosmetic effect.

- On the path of vengeance: The hunt for enemies will take you through hidden corners of the city, from gang-ridden suburbs to cold hallways of corporate towers; You’ve got one day, and countless enemies; For every mistake, time will be the price to pay

- A unique graphic style and a game filled with epic levels and unforgettable backgrounds
This loop is a good fit if you find satisfaction in studying a difficult encounter and gradually improving your approach. It can be frustrating if you expect steady progress without repeating fights. The game’s appeal depends in part on whether that trade-off feels motivating: every setback can teach you something, but it still carries a cost within the run.
Is Sifu hard, and can you make it easier?
Sifu was demanding enough at launch that Sloclap later expanded its difficulty choices. Tarno acknowledged that the original difficulty could be frustrating. Student is a lower-difficulty option, while Master offers a greater challenge; later updates also added modifiers. On PlayStation, the official listing describes adjustable difficulty, individual assists, a practice mode, control reminders, and the ability to pause offline. Available options may differ by platform.

Those additions give players more ways to approach the combat, but they do not change the game into a conventional low-pressure action title. If you are interested but wary of the original difficulty, look for the assist and practice options available in your version. If you want a game that rarely asks you to retry an encounter, its core design may still be a poor match.
What does Sifu Arena mode add?
The free Arenas expansion is a separate, challenge-based offering rather than a continuation of the main storyline. Sloclap lists five modes, nine locations, and 45 challenges. Its official site says the expansion adds “multiple hours of gameplay that will put your Kung Fu to the test.”

- You are free to pick your fights against the Kami in any order. The game features a dynamic difficulty system where each enemy strength is defined by the player’s chosen path. This means that the very same Kami fought at the very beginning could also be the final boss in a different route. Hope to never leave the one you struggle most to fight last!
- Besides sword attacks, dodges, head stomps and other basic abilities, Rei will learn a completely new skill for each defeated Kami. Those will provide further depth to your combat arsenal, be it a stronger dash, a weapon that can execute enemies, the ability to heal and many more!
- Player choice is the ultimate power. Taking into account the vastly distinct enemies’ patterns and unique skills granted upon each victory, you will be able to decide how to approach every challenge. It won’t be easy either way, but you can always go back and try something different.
- Gurei is a game about fighting strong enemies, but that’s not all. The Kami inhabit a surreal castle located between the human and spirit worlds. After each victory, Rei comes closer to the realm of spirits, starting to encounter peculiar characters from Japanese mythology. These creatures will add novelty and strangeness to your journey, providing commentary, unique animations, side objectives and obscure secrets.
- You will get to know the different Kami quite well. When Rei defeats them, she absorbs their power and their personality. The defeated Kami will be carried around wherever Rei goes, and they’ll surely have stuff to talk about. Sometimes their remarks will be useful information that builds the player’s understanding of the lore and the game mechanics, but sometimes they will be... not so helpful, to put it briefly. Good luck!
Arenas are a meaningful addition for players who want structured combat challenges beyond the revenge campaign. They are less of a reason to buy the game if your main interest is story progression and you do not enjoy replaying fights to improve.

Is Sifu worth playing on Switch?
Nintendo Life’s 2022 review of the Switch version rated it 8/10. The reviewer praised its hard-hitting combat and aging mechanic, while reporting that docked play held 30fps for the most part, handheld play had more frequent frame drops—usually while walking—and initial loading took longer than on PS5. The review also noted a visible film-grain effect in docked play. These are observations from that review, not fresh testing or a guarantee of how every player will experience the game.
The Switch version is an option if portability matters and you are comfortable with those reported trade-offs. If loading time or the most consistent performance is your priority, the cited review alone is not enough to make a broad comparison across all current versions.
What about Sifu on mobile?
As of October 4, 2026, Sloclap’s official site lists a mobile launch announcement dated October 1, saying Sifu Mobile launches October 12, 2026. That is a scheduled date, not confirmation that the mobile version is already available. Availability may depend on when and where you are reading this.
Are there physical editions of Sifu?
Microids announced a Nintendo Switch Vengeance Edition containing the game, a SteelBook, a printed artbook, a digital score, and three lithographs. Microids also described a Redemption Edition and a collector Redemption Set, which includes a Student figurine, a pendant, and a 160-page developer diary. These are announced edition contents; they do not establish current stock, price, or availability in a particular region. Check the listing and region before buying, especially if a specific extra is the reason for choosing a physical edition.
Quick Recap
Who should play Sifu?
- Consider it if you want a focused single-player action game and enjoy learning enemy patterns, improving through retries, and using the environment during fights.
- Consider it with the difficulty options in mind if the original reputation for difficulty puts you off; Sloclap later added lower and higher difficulty choices and modifiers, though features vary by platform.
- Look elsewhere if you strongly dislike repeating encounters or want an action game that puts little pressure on you to learn its combat.
- Choose a version by your priorities: portability, controls and display, performance evidence for that specific version, and physical extras are more useful considerations than assuming one platform is best for everyone.
