In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Long Sword works through a simple loop: land ordinary attacks to build Spirit Gauge, spend gauge on Spirit Blade attacks, then complete a Roundslash or land a well-timed counter to raise your gauge level. Strong finishers can hit hard, but they also spend that resource, so use them when the monster gives you room to commit.
This guide covers Wilds using the current default PS5 controls, with Xbox equivalents where available. Inputs and move performance can change with updates; check the in-game Hunter’s Notes and your controller layout. How the Long Sword’s Spirit Gauge works
Ordinary attacks that connect build the Spirit Gauge. Spirit Blade moves consume gauge, and completing the Spirit Blade sequence with a Roundslash can raise the gauge level. The levels matter because the higher-power red state gives access to stronger or altered attacks. Think of gauge as both fuel for attacks and a level to build, rather than a resource to spend as soon as it appears. The current Wilds guide and Icy Veins’ Wilds guide describe this core loop.
Start with ordinary attacks
Use Overhead Slash and Thrust to find your reach and keep pressure on the monster while building gauge. In the current guide’s default PS5 mapping, Triangle performs Overhead Slash and Circle performs Thrust. Xbox equivalents are listed in that guide; PC inputs depend on keyboard and mouse settings.

Complete the Spirit Blade sequence
When you have gauge, use Spirit Blade attacks (R2 on the default PS5 layout) and aim to finish the sequence with Spirit Roundslash. The level increase comes from completing the Roundslash, not merely starting the sequence. Avoid forcing the full combo if the monster is about to attack or move out of range.
Use counters when you can read the attack
Long Sword counters reward timing, but neither move is a guaranteed escape button. A counter can fail if mistimed, and do not assume it will answer every attack. Learn one setup at a time, then use it when you can recognize the incoming hit.

Foresight Slash
Foresight Slash is a mid-combo option. A successful evade and counter can be followed by Spirit Roundslash, which can raise the gauge level. The move depends on timing and the right follow-up; do not treat an attempted Foresight Slash as a level increase by itself. The current Wilds guide and Icy Veins cover the counter and follow-up.
Iai Spirit Slash
Special Sheathe sets up Iai Spirit Slash. If you time the slash successfully against an attack, it can raise a gauge level. Practice the sheathe and timing separately before relying on it during a difficult hunt.

Use Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust on wounds
Focus Mode helps aim attacks, and Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust is an option for targeting a monster’s wounds. The current Wilds guide says that landing this Focus Strike on a wound raises the Spirit Gauge level. It is a situational way to progress the gauge; first line up the wound and make sure there is time to perform the attack. See the current move and control guide.

Spirit Thrust can lead into Helm Breaker. With the gauge at red, Helm Breaker can lead into Spirit Release Slash. These are committed attack sequences that spend gauge, so the decision is not just whether the monster is in reach: make sure the opening is long enough to finish the move and accept the resource cost. A practical practice routine
- Begin a familiar hunt by using Overhead Slash and Thrust to learn spacing and build gauge.
- Add the Spirit Blade sequence and practice confirming the Roundslash before expecting a level increase.
- Work on Foresight Slash first, using it only when you can identify the incoming attack and follow up. Practice Iai Spirit Slash separately from Special Sheathe.
- Use Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust when you can aim at a wound.
- Before each monster attack, name your next intended action: build gauge, complete a Spirit Blade combo, use a counter whose timing you understand, or hold a finisher for a safer opening.
This routine is a practice suggestion based on the documented timing and resource loop, not a tested performance claim.
Which game’s Long Sword controls are these?
These moves and inputs are for Monster Hunter Wilds, not a universal Long Sword control scheme. Monster Hunter Now uses a distinct mobile implementation; its official support page describes the weapon as granting “swift attack speed and agile movement.” That description applies to Now, not as a Wilds balance claim.
