ASUS ROG Phone II Review: A 2019 Gaming Phone with Serious Battery Capacity

The 2019 ROG Phone II paired a 120Hz AMOLED display and gaming-focused controls with a 6000mAh battery, but high refresh and the phone’s large size shaped the experience.

The ASUS ROG Phone II made a strong case for gaming on a phone when it launched in 2019: a 120Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 855 Plus, game-focused controls and cooling, stereo speakers, and a 6000mAh battery. Those features came in a large handset, and using its highest-refresh settings could cut into the endurance that made its battery notable. This is a historical review, not a claim about the phone’s present-day software support, availability, or used-battery condition.

What the ROG Phone II offered at launch

ASUS announced the ROG Phone II on July 23, 2019. Its central proposition was to bring gaming-specific hardware together in one device rather than rely on a fast processor alone. ASUS’s launch announcement specified a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor clocked up to 2.96GHz, an Adreno 640 GPU, and configurations with up to 12GB of RAM. These were flagship-class components for 2019, not an indication of how the phone compares with current top-tier devices.

The display was a 6.59-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. ASUS also advertised a 1ms response time, 10-bit HDR, Delta-E below 1 color accuracy, and 49ms touch latency. Treat those figures as manufacturer specifications: GSMArena praised the panel’s accuracy in its review, but its measured color results did not exactly match ASUS’s advertised Delta-E claim.

Is the ROG Phone II good for gaming?

For its era, the ROG Phone II was designed around several practical gaming advantages: a fast-refresh screen, shoulder controls, a cooling system, a landscape-friendly arrangement, and front-facing speakers. These features could make a game easier to control or more immersive, but they do not erase the compromises of a large, heavy phone or make every game run at 120 frames per second.

AirTrigger II controls

ASUS equipped the phone with AirTrigger II ultrasonic sensors along its sides. The controls supported tap and slide gestures, with vibration feedback; ASUS quoted 20ms AirTrigger vibration latency. They offered a way to map shoulder-style inputs without covering as much of the display with thumbs, though their usefulness depended on game support and personal preference.

Cooling and audio

ASUS described GameCool II as a 3D vapor-chamber cooling system. It also offered the AeroActive Cooler II, an active-cooling accessory. The cooling hardware was part of the phone’s gaming focus, but the supplied evidence does not establish sustained frame rates or temperature results across games, so it should not be read as proof of a particular performance level under every load.

Dual front-facing stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a side USB-C port suited landscape play. The side port made charging while holding the phone horizontally more practical than a bottom-facing connector would.

ASUS ROG Phone II battery life: what testing tells us

The 6000mAh battery gave the phone unusually strong battery credentials in 2019, but capacity alone cannot predict gaming runtime. Display refresh rate, brightness, game workload, wireless conditions, and battery health all matter.

120Hz versus 60Hz

Does 120Hz drain battery? The available evidence supports a clear trade-off: higher refresh can make motion feel smoother, while demanding more power. In an ASUS ROG editorial account of an outdoor Pokémon Go session, the author used T-Mobile LTE with Wi-Fi disabled, started at full charge, selected 60Hz because the game did not need a high refresh rate, and left X Mode off to conserve power. The account does not provide a complete final runtime, so it cannot support a precise hours-of-play claim. Read ASUS’s battery-use account.

In its September 2019 lab review, GSMArena reported that refresh rate made a noticeable difference in screen-on battery tests and characterized the phone as one of its top battery performers at the time. Its routine used 200-nit brightness, corresponding to 85% of that review unit’s brightness slider; its separate maximum-auto display measurement reached 626 nits. These are historical results from a particular review unit and protocol, not a guarantee of gaming time or present-day performance.

Charging claims

ASUS specified a 30W ROG HyperCharge adapter, support for USB-C Power Delivery and Quick Charge 4.0, and a claimed charge from empty to 4000mAh capacity in 58 minutes. That is ASUS’s stated figure, not independent charge-time testing. GSMArena noted that the phone itself accepted less current than the bundled charger’s rated output, so the adapter’s wattage should not be mistaken for a guaranteed charging rate.

Accessories and everyday trade-offs

ASUS named accessories including the ROG Kunai Gamepad, TwinView Dock II, and AeroActive Cooler II. ASUS’s ROG Phone II accessories page documents the lineup, but does not establish current stock, pricing, or compatibility in every market. Verify the exact model and regional fit before buying an accessory for a used phone.

The gaming-first design also asks for space and comfort compromises: this is a large handset, and the sources do not provide a comparable weight-and-thickness table against contemporary phones. Anyone considering one should handle it if possible, particularly if they expect long sessions or routine one-handed use. A gaming phone’s advantages matter less if its size is uncomfortable for everyday tasks.

Should you consider the ROG Phone II now?

The ROG Phone II is best understood as a historically ambitious 2019 gaming flagship, not as a current-market recommendation. The cited sources do not establish its current Android version, security patch status, new or used availability, or prevailing price. A used unit’s battery condition is especially important: a 6000mAh rating at launch says nothing definitive about a battery’s capacity after years of use.

Before comparing or buying one, check the factors that can change the practical value of an older gaming phone:

  • Condition: inspect battery health, screen, ports, buttons, and cooling accessories rather than relying on launch specifications.
  • Software: independently verify the Android version and security patch status for the exact unit; the cited historical sources do not settle current support.
  • Network fit: confirm that the specific regional variant supports the bands and services you need.
  • Game performance: consider the Snapdragon 855 Plus and Adreno 640 as 2019 hardware, and check the demands of the games you actually play.
  • Comfort and accessories: assess the handset’s size and confirm the exact compatibility and availability of any controller, dock, or cooler.

For a comparison with another gaming phone or a mainstream flagship, use measured endurance at a stated refresh rate, sustained game performance and thermal behavior, display specifications, comfort, controls and ports, software support, regional compatibility, and the price and condition of the individual device. No current competitor ranking or secondhand-price comparison is established here.
