Pick heroes to cover damage, survivability and support for the ship and encounter you are building around; then weigh their skills, stars, upgrade access and positions together.
What the hero roles do
Role labels are useful shorthand for the job a hero can do, not a complete official taxonomy or a guarantee that a hero belongs in every crew. An independent Sea of Conquest Handbook hero guide, updated September 28, 2026 and checked against version 1.1.790, describes these practical roles:
- Captain: Helps define the ship’s combat identity and the plan the rest of the crew should support.
- First mate: Often amplifies damage or applies debuffs that make a damage plan more effective.
- Gunner: Adds direct damage output.
- Defense: Helps a crew survive through mitigation, shields, aggro or durability.
- Support: Can contribute healing, dispels, buffs or rage manipulation.
- Flex: Fills a gap when the roster lacks a more specialized option.
Read a hero’s actual skills alongside the role description: two heroes with similar labels may contribute differently, while a flexible hero may be valuable because their kit solves a specific weakness.
What synergy means in practice
Build around a shared plan
Strategic synergy means that the crew’s skills reinforce one another. Choose a damage approach for the ship, then avoid combining heroes with unrelated kits simply because each looks strong on its own. The useful question is whether the crew can deliver its intended damage while surviving long enough to do so.

Match the plan to the encounter
Campaign and other PvE fights, sea monsters, rallies and PvP can reward different damage and survival profiles. A short fight may favor immediate output; a longer engagement can make defense, healing, control or debuffs more valuable. The Handbook’s crew composition guide treats fleet purpose as a factor in composition, rather than prescribing one lineup for every mode.
Distinguish tactical fit from numeric bonuses
A community wiki describes game-defined interactions such as same-damage-type bonuses, skill-trigger interactions and preferred-position bonuses. Those precise mechanics are third-party claims: the wiki was last modified March 15, 2026 and cites third-party guides. Check current in-game hero and position descriptions before relying on an exact rule or percentage; do not assume a universal same-type bonus based only on a wiki summary.

A practical way to compare crews
- Name the content target. Decide whether the crew is for campaign or another PvE encounter, a sea monster, a rally or PvP. The target changes the relative value of burst damage, durability and control.
- Choose the ship’s damage plan. Look for heroes whose skills support that plan instead of selecting solely by rarity or a tier label.
- Check job coverage. Ask whether the fleet has primary damage, a front-line or defensive option, and support. Add control or debuffs when the encounter rewards staying effective over a longer fight.
- Compare the whole fit. Assess role coverage, how well the kits and damage approach cohere, expected fight length, stars and realistic upgrade access, and ship or position compatibility.
- Invest in a developable core. The Handbook advises concentrating scarce upgrades rather than spreading them across many unfinished ships. A hero you can advance may be a more useful choice for your account than a paper-tier favorite you cannot develop.
When two lineups appear viable, compare them on those same axes rather than looking for a timeless “best crew.” A lineup that covers every job on paper can still be a poor fit if its skills do not support a common plan or its heroes are far behind in stars.

The Handbook’s hero and crew guides were updated September 28, 2026; its hero guide says it was checked against version 1.1.790. Apple’s US App Store listing displays version 1.1.800, dated September 24, 2026, and recent update notes mention crossover heroes and an additional-heroes flagship change. That later version context is a reason to recheck named builds, limited heroes and position advice in the current client. These version notes establish that the game changes, not that any particular crew is strongest.
