RPCSX describes itself as an experimental emulator for PS4 and PS5 games, and says booting games from its VSH remains a work in progress. The fixes below focus on shadPS4 where applicable; do not assume its settings or game reports apply to RPCSX or another project.
Confirm the emulator and game before changing settings
Check the project name and version shown in the app or its official documentation. The shadPS4 repository calls it an early PS4 emulator and notes that its core does not include a GUI. RPCSX is a separate experimental project that mentions both PS4 and PS5 games. Their compatibility and troubleshooting guidance is not interchangeable.
For shadPS4, start with the project’s compatibility list and find the report for the exact game. The official repository warns that many games do not work, while games that do run may still have emulation issues. A successful result for another title—or even another report for the same title on a different build—does not guarantee your result.
Check the host against shadPS4’s published minimums
The shadPS4 Quickstart lists these baseline requirements. They are minimum thresholds, not a promise of smooth performance or compatibility.

If your computer falls below one of these requirements, note that when assessing a failure; meeting all three still does not establish that a particular game will run well.
Fix graphics-card detection and driver issues
If the emulator cannot detect your graphics card, first check whether the installed build is using the GPU you intend. This matters on systems with more than one GPU, such as a computer with integrated and discrete graphics; the exact way to select or verify the GPU depends on the operating system and build.

- Install current graphics drivers for the GPU you want to use.
- If your system has multiple GPUs, verify that shadPS4 is assigned to the intended one using the controls available in your operating system and build.
- Reopen the emulator and reproduce the problem. If detection still fails, record the GPU model, driver version, operating system, emulator version, and any relevant log errors.
The Quickstart warns that outdated drivers can interfere, including drivers for a GPU that is not currently in use. Driver updates can address a host-side problem, but they cannot make an unsupported game compatible.
Diagnose crashes, stutter, black screens, and visual faults
Do not treat a symptom as proof of a single cause. The official documentation does not establish a universal setting that fixes crashes, stutter, black screens, or graphical errors. Check the exact game’s compatibility report and emulator version first; then collect evidence from a repeatable run.

Reproduce the issue and collect logs
Developer documentation identifies the emulator’s user/log directory and names shadps4.log, shad_log.txt, and a game-specific log. Consult the developer guide for log and diagnostic details. For performance testing, it describes starting without debugging; for Vulkan diagnostics, it mentions validation-related settings.
- Record the emulator version, game, operating system, CPU, GPU, and driver version.
- Reproduce the same failure and note what you did immediately before it occurred.
- Locate the relevant files in
user/log; include the game-specific log when available. - Use the project’s issue tracker to look for an existing game-specific report or submit a report with the relevant errors and reproduction details.
Logs make a report more actionable than a description such as “it runs badly.” Do not assume that enabling diagnostics or changing a setting is itself a fix; follow game- or version-specific guidance when available.

Check whether a controller problem is separate
Controller input is distinct from game compatibility and rendering performance. The Quickstart says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box and keyboard-and-mouse mappings can be customized. It does not say that buying a PS5 controller will resolve a game’s crashes, stutter, or compatibility problems.

- Game is listed as not working or has a known issue: treat that game report as the starting point. Check whether it applies to your emulator version rather than applying unrelated tweaks.
- Host misses a published minimum: record the shortfall. A machine below the baseline may be a limiting factor, but the available documentation does not quantify how much performance a particular upgrade would add.
- GPU is missing or the wrong one is in use: update the relevant drivers and verify GPU selection before testing again.
- The game still fails with a qualifying host and correct GPU: reproduce it, inspect the logs, and compare the details with the game’s compatibility report or submit them to the project’s issue tracker.
Compatibility, requirements, and reported fixes can change as emulator builds develop. Check the official project pages for the version you are actually running; no dated aggregate compatibility percentage or guaranteed frame-rate figure is established by the cited official materials.
