Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want a futuristic city, a mercenary protagonist, and the option of a spy-thriller expansion. Choose The Witcher 3 if dark fantasy, monster hunting, and two major story expansions sound more appealing. There is no evidence-based universal winner here: the best fit depends on the world and role you want, plus your platform and the edition you own or plan to buy.
Which game fits your taste?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A dangerous future city and a hired-gun protagonist | Cyberpunk 2077 | CD PROJEKT RED describes the open-world RPG as the story of V, a hired gun in a dangerous city of the future. Official game descriptions. |
| Dark fantasy and the life of a professional monster slayer | The Witcher 3 | The publisher describes The Witcher as a dark-fantasy role-playing series following Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster slayer. Official game descriptions. |
| A spy-thriller expansion | Cyberpunk 2077 | Phantom Liberty adds the Dogtown district, a new story, characters, a skill tree, side activities, weapons, and items. CD PROJEKT RED’s expansion launch announcement. |
| Two named major expansions included in the current remastered offering | The Witcher 3 | The publisher says the remaster includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Availability and upgrade eligibility depend on platform. Remaster release announcement. |
What kind of role do you want to inhabit?
V, a hired gun in Night City
Cyberpunk 2077 centers on V and a future-city setting. Its identity is built around a mercenary’s story in a dangerous urban world. If the draw is science fiction, city life, and a protagonist operating as a hired gun, this is the clearer match. CD PROJEKT RED’s game descriptions.
Geralt, a professional monster slayer
The Witcher 3 follows Geralt of Rivia in a dark-fantasy role-playing world. Its central fantasy is being a professional monster slayer rather than a mercenary in a futuristic city. Choose it if that setting and role are what you want from an RPG. CD PROJEKT RED’s game descriptions.

Check platform support, especially on older consoles
Platform matters most if you are considering Phantom Liberty or a remastered edition. CD PROJEKT RED’s previous-generation support notice says that after Patch 1.6, subsequent new content updates and improvements would be made for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S; it also says Phantom Liberty was developed for those platforms, not PS4 or Xbox One. Treat that as the publisher’s stated boundary for the expansion and the support policy described in that notice, rather than assuming every later edition has identical platform terms. - Pick Cyberpunk 2077 for V’s future-city mercenary story or if Phantom Liberty’s spy-thriller premise is the stronger draw.
- Pick The Witcher 3 for Geralt’s dark-fantasy monster-slayer role, particularly if you want the remastered offering that includes both named expansions.
- Before buying, compare the precise edition, platform, and upgrade eligibility—not just the game title. An expansion or upgrade may not be available on every platform or apply to every copy.
