A chosen-one RPG makes the protagonist’s exceptional destiny or importance central to the story. A grounded RPG emphasizes constraints and consequences: what characters need, how communities and institutions work, and how actions change the world. These are story tendencies, not mutually exclusive genres. A game can give its hero a world-shaping role while still making scarcity, relationships, politics, and player choices matter.
What makes an RPG a chosen-one story?
In a chosen-one story, the protagonist’s special status is a major reason events revolve around them. That status might come from prophecy, lineage, cosmic selection, a unique identity, or an extraordinary power. The character may begin as an outsider or an ordinary person, but the story establishes that they are uniquely positioned to face a crisis.
The useful question is not whether the hero is exceptionally important, but what the game does with that importance. Does the player shape how the protagonist responds to their role? Do choices affect relationships, factions, or outcomes? A central destiny can coexist with meaningful agency; it does not, by itself, tell you how much freedom the game offers.
What makes an RPG feel grounded?
A grounded RPG pays attention to limits and consequences. Food, water, resources, trade, history, institutions, and community can shape what characters do, even when the setting includes magic, advanced technology, or other speculative elements. “Grounded” does not mean realistic graphics, low fantasy, or small stakes. It describes the story’s attention to how people and places respond to events.

RPG designer Josh Sawyer has described the importance of material conditions in a setting such as Fallout: “people do have to eat, they have to drink, they have to deal with the reality of the world.” The point is not that every story needs a survival checklist; it is that fantastical premises can feel connected to lived constraints. PC Gamer’s interview with Sawyer discusses that approach to setting design.
How to compare the two story approaches
Rather than sorting games into rigid boxes, look at several features together. A game can sit at different points on each dimension.

| Story feature | Chosen-one emphasis | Grounded emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Starting status | The protagonist may be marked by destiny or revealed to have a unique role. | The protagonist may be an ordinary person, an outsider, or a professional with a defined place in the world. |
| Why the protagonist matters | Prophecy, lineage, cosmic selection, or singular power may establish their importance. | Skills, relationships, and decisions may make them matter within a community or conflict. |
| Conflict and stakes | A world-scale crisis may organize the plot. | Survival, personal stakes, community, or factional politics may shape the story; these can still grow to enormous stakes. |
| World constraints | Exceptional status may place the protagonist at the center of events. | Material realities and social systems may affect what characters can do and what follows from their actions. |
| Player expression | The player may decide how the protagonist fulfills, resists, or interprets their role. | The player may define the protagonist through decisions and actions within the world’s limits. |
These are tendencies, not a test with a single right answer. The story’s scale and the player’s freedom are also separate questions. CD Projekt Red describes story-driven games as moving between free-form play and more controlled sequences, with choices capable of affecting narration, level design, gameplay, and endings. Its discussion of meaningful choices is a useful reminder that a dramatic, authored story need not make every moment open-ended.
Can a chosen protagonist still be grounded?
Yes. A protagonist can be uniquely important to a crisis while still having to navigate believable relationships, scarce resources, institutions, or political trade-offs. Likewise, an ordinary starting point does not guarantee a grounded story: the plot may quickly turn the character into a figure whose importance comes mainly from destiny or exceptional power.

Returnal offers an example of overlap rather than a definitive label. In a PlayStation creator story, the team discusses balancing Selene’s grounded human elements with power fantasy and grit, and describes gameplay actions as helping define her alongside her backstory. That combination shows why the labels work better as a spectrum than as opposing categories.
Why player agency matters more than the label
“Chosen one” is not a verdict on a game’s writing, and “grounded” is not a guarantee of depth. To judge how a story involves the player, ask whether decisions express a point of view and whether consequences reach beyond a line of dialogue. A choice might change a relationship, shift a faction’s position, alter a level or gameplay situation, or affect an ending. The protagonist can be central to the story without the player being powerless within it.

The GDC Vault listing for Joshua Sawyer’s talk on choice architecture, player expression, and narrative design in Fallout: New Vegas identifies this as a design lens for thinking about player expression. The listing establishes the talk’s subject; it should not be taken as evidence for specific conclusions beyond that description.

- Look for chosen-one emphasis if you want a protagonist whose exceptional identity or destiny drives a large-scale story.
- Look for grounded emphasis if you want the world’s material and social realities to shape characters’ options and the consequences of their actions.
- Expect a blend if you want high stakes alongside constraints, relationships, and choices that affect how events unfold.
There is no established statistic in the cited material measuring how common either approach is or which players prefer. The more useful comparison is how a particular game establishes the protagonist’s importance, represents the world’s limits, and connects player choices to consequences.
