EA said no player data was accessed and that it did not expect an impact on its games or business. Details naming FIFA 21 and Frostbite, and an estimate of about 780 GB, came from contemporary reports of hackers’ claims—not from EA’s confirmation.
What EA confirmed
In a statement dated June 11, 2021, EA said it was investigating an intrusion and confirmed that a limited amount of game source code and related tools had been stolen. The company said it had made security improvements, was working with law enforcement and other experts, and did not expect the incident to affect its games or business. EA’s statement said: “No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy.”
That is EA’s account and risk assessment. The cited public statements do not provide an independent forensic finding or a full inventory of affected material.
Were FIFA 21 or Frostbite source code stolen?
Contemporary reporting by WIRED and Reuters, via RTÉ, attributed claims to hackers that the stolen material included FIFA 21 and Frostbite source code and tools. Those titles were not specified in EA’s short public confirmation, so they should be treated as reported attacker claims rather than details EA confirmed.

Where did the 780 GB figure come from?
Reuters and WIRED reported that hackers claimed to have taken about 780 gigabytes of data. EA did not give a volume in its statement; its description was “a limited amount” of source code and related tools. The reported figure is therefore an attributed claim, not an independently verified total.
What happened after EA’s initial disclosure?
On July 14, 2021, EA said alleged hackers had threatened extortion and released some files. EA said it had analyzed the released files and found no reason to believe they raised player privacy concerns or created a material risk to the company, its games, or its players. It also said it continued to work with federal law enforcement officials as part of the investigation. EA’s July update did not establish whether the publicly released files represented the full set of material taken.

Did the breach affect players?
EA said no player data was accessed and that it had no reason to believe player privacy was at risk. In its July update, it likewise said its review of the released files found no reason to believe they posed a privacy concern or material risk to players. These are EA’s statements about the incident; the cited public sources do not independently verify the completeness of the stolen dataset or the company’s assessment.
EA breach timeline
- June 11, 2021: EA disclosed the intrusion, confirmed theft of a limited amount of game source code and related tools, and said no player data was accessed.
- June 10–11, 2021: WIRED and Reuters reporting described hackers’ claims about FIFA 21, Frostbite, and an estimated 780 GB of material.
- July 14, 2021: EA said alleged hackers had issued an extortion threat and released some files; the company said its review found no reason to believe those files posed a player privacy concern or material risk.
What is still unknown
EA’s cited statements do not quantify the complete dataset or list every affected repository, tool, or game project. The public sources cited here also do not independently verify the hackers’ claims or the completeness of EA’s review of released files. The distinction matters: the breach and limited source-code theft were confirmed by EA, while the named titles and volume were reported as claims attributed to hackers.
