The right fix depends on whether you have low average frame rates, stuttering or hitching, screen tearing, sluggish controls, or long loading times. Start by checking hardware and background load, then change one game setting at a time and retest. That makes it easier to improve smoothness without needlessly sacrificing image quality.
First identify what feels wrong
“Smoother performance” can mean several different things. A low frame rate is not the same problem as uneven frame pacing, tearing, input latency, or slow loading. Settings that help one symptom may do little for another, so note when the problem happens: in dense vegetation, crowded areas, during fast movement through the world, or even while standing still.
- Low frame rate: The game consistently feels slow, especially in demanding scenes.
- Stuttering or hitching: Movement is interrupted by brief pauses or uneven delivery of frames.
- Tearing: Parts of the image appear out of alignment during motion.
- Sluggish controls: Inputs feel delayed, even if the image looks smooth.
- Long loading or streaming pauses: The issue occurs while entering areas or bringing world assets into view, rather than during ordinary play.
Use the game’s own performance guidance where possible. Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2 performance guide, last updated October 29, 2025, is a useful worked example, not a universal ranking for every RPG. Obsidian says, “Each step can improve framerate or stability, often with little visual sacrifice,” and recommends testing changes rather than treating one preset as right for everyone.
Work through the checks in this order
- Check requirements and GPU selection. Compare your PC with the specific game’s system requirements. On a laptop or PC with more than one GPU, confirm the game is using the intended high-performance GPU rather than an energy-saving device. Bethesda’s Starfield PC performance guidance identifies hardware, GPU selection, and power-saving modes as troubleshooting checks.
- Close avoidable background load. Shut down applications you do not need while playing, particularly if hitching or low frame rates occur. Obsidian notes that applications such as browsers with many open tabs can consume CPU and memory headroom. Temporarily disable overlays as a diagnostic test if performance is poor; Bethesda also includes overlays among its low-frame-rate troubleshooting checks. If the problem persists without them, restore the overlays you use.
- Update graphics drivers, then restart. Obsidian recommends current graphics drivers and suggests a clean driver installation if graphics-related problems remain, followed by restarting the PC. Do not assume an update will produce a particular FPS increase: the support guidance does not provide benchmark results.
- Test upscaling before making a large resolution cut. Upscalers render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a larger image, reducing GPU workload while retaining more output detail than simply lowering the display resolution may. The Outer Worlds 2 guide lists TSR, NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS; the choices and quality modes available depend on the game, GPU, driver, and version. Compare the supported modes in your game and keep the one that gives an acceptable balance of clarity and smoothness.
- Reduce one demanding setting at a time. Lower a setting, replay the same area or activity, and compare. If there is no useful improvement—or the visual loss is not worth it—restore the original value before testing another option.
- Use loading-specific fixes for loading problems. Check where the game is installed if the main complaint is loading or streaming. This is a different target from improving average in-scene frame rate.
Choose visual settings by the scene and bottleneck
There is no source-backed universal “best” order for lowering graphics options. Obsidian’s recommendations for The Outer Worlds 2 identify the following as candidates to test, not as guaranteed fixes or settings that should always be disabled:
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
| Setting or option | When to test a reduction | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Shadows, reflections, and global illumination | When demanding scenes are slow and the game appears limited by graphics workload. | Lowering these can reduce visual richness; test individually rather than turning every lighting feature down. |
| Foliage and view distance | When performance worsens in areas with dense vegetation or extensive visible scenery. | Reducing world detail or visibility can change how full and expansive the environment looks. |
| Visual effects | When scenes with many effects are especially demanding. | Check the affected scenes; a lower setting may reduce detail that is important to the game’s look. |
| Textures | When testing the game’s suggested graphics options for your particular hardware. | Texture quality affects visible surface detail; the cited guidance does not establish a universal performance gain from lowering it. |
| Crowd density | When populated areas feel slower than quieter areas. | Fewer characters can make the world feel less busy. Obsidian also lists it as a CPU-heavy option to test in a specific bottleneck scenario. |
| Ray tracing | When the game’s performance indicators show low GPU load alongside high CPU use, following the Outer Worlds 2-specific advice. | Its effect varies with hardware and scene complexity; do not assume switching it off is always best. |
For this worked example, Obsidian also suggests trying a lower overall preset or switching to custom settings. A preset can be a quick starting point, but individual adjustments let you retain options that matter to you. The suggested settings and their effects should not be assumed to rank identically in another RPG or engine.
Set frame pacing, tearing, and latency separately
A frame-rate cap, V-Sync, and variable refresh rate (VRR) address related but different aspects of presentation. There is no single choice that is best across every display and game.

- Frame cap: Obsidian suggests trying a cap near the display’s refresh rate as a starting point to stabilize pacing and avoid overworking the GPU. The useful cap depends on the game’s stable performance, display, and VRR support. NVIDIA documents a per-game maximum frame-rate setting in its Manage 3D Settings reference. AMD notes that frame-rate limiting can reduce power use, heat, and fan noise in supported situations in its Radeon settings reference.
- V-Sync: Test it if tearing is the problem. It can reduce tearing, but may add input latency; if responsiveness is your priority or stuttering appears, test with it off and compare.
- VRR, G-SYNC, and FreeSync: These depend on compatible game, GPU, driver, and display settings. Check the game and graphics-control-panel options for your configuration rather than assuming a feature is available or enabled.
Keep these tests separate from image-quality adjustments. If you change a cap and V-Sync together, for example, it becomes harder to tell which change affected tearing, pacing, or control response.
Use frame generation only when it suits the game
Frame generation is not a universal substitute for a stable base frame rate. In its The Outer Worlds 2 guidance, Obsidian says to use Frame Generation only when supported, notes it may feel sluggish below roughly 45 FPS, and advises adjusting the frame cap when the feature is active. That figure and cap advice are specific to this game’s support guidance; implementations and behavior can differ in other titles.

Check storage for long loads and streaming pauses
If the problem is slow loading or assets appearing late, install the game on the fastest suitable drive available. Obsidian ranks M.2 NVMe ahead of SATA SSD for The Outer Worlds 2 and advises against a mechanical hard drive; Bethesda also recommends an SSD for Starfield. This is loading and streaming guidance, not a promise of higher average FPS during play. Before buying an M.2 NVMe SSD, check that your motherboard or laptop supports the drive, has an available compatible M.2 slot, and has enough capacity for the game and other files.
Apply Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only if it fits
Microsoft’s Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games feature applies to DirectX 10 and 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. For compatible games, it transitions presentation to flip model to reduce frame latency and enables features such as Auto HDR and VRR on supported displays. It does not apply to every game API or title.

Keep tests reversible
Change one setting, revisit the same kind of scene, and judge the specific symptom you set out to fix. If the change worsens the experience, return it to its original value. Prefer a game-level or per-application setting when the adjustment is meant for one RPG, rather than applying a broad driver override to every game. AMD’s reference describes resetting global or individual application settings if needed.
