Verified is Valve’s clearest positive signal; Playable means the game may work with caveats. Unsupported is a warning, while Unknown or untested means there is no official rating to rely on—not proof the game will fail.
How to check a game’s Steam Deck compatibility
- Find the exact game. Search Steam for the title and make sure you have the right edition or bundle; separate store entries can have different compatibility information.
- Open its store listing or library details. Look for the Steam Deck compatibility status and any details shown with it. Steam’s storefront supports Deck compatibility filters, including Verified and Playable, and displays a compatibility review date. Browse Steam’s Deck compatibility filters.
- Read the caveats, not just the label. Check whether the stated issue matters for your preferred controls, text legibility, launcher use, or other aspects of play.
- If the rating is missing or uncertain, look for recent reports about the exact game and current build. Treat community reports as supplementary evidence, not as an official Valve rating or a guarantee.
- Check the information again near installation if it may be old. Valve describes ratings as snapshots that can change as developers and Valve address compatibility issues.
The official pages confirm Steam’s compatibility filters and categories but do not establish a current, exact button-by-button route through the Deck client. The reliable check is the individual game’s store listing or library details, rather than an assumed sequence of client menus.
What each compatibility label means
| Status | How to interpret it | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve’s strongest positive compatibility signal. Its criteria are intentionally demanding and assess whether a game works well on Deck. | Read any details shown for the game and decide whether they suit your needs. |
| Playable | The game can work, but may involve usability caveats. Valve gives the example of a game that uses controller glyphs most of the time but occasionally asks for a keyboard key. | Look closely at the specific caveats, especially input, legibility, and launcher behavior. |
| Unsupported | A warning that the game has a notable problem under Valve’s criteria. It does not mean no user can ever get the game to run: Valve has said even an optional minigame crash or an improperly rendered tutorial video may be enough for this rating. | If you still want to try it, check recent reports for the exact game and build; do not assume the rating is irrelevant. |
| Unknown or untested | No official rating is available to answer whether the game works. | Look for recent, game-specific player reports, while keeping in mind they are not an official assessment. |
How to judge caveats and player reports
A category is a useful starting point, not a complete account of whether the game will suit you. A keyboard prompt may be a minor inconvenience for one player and a serious obstacle for another. Likewise, legibility or launcher behavior can matter more than the category alone. Valve’s examples show why details matter: a title may function but still have a usability issue that affects its rating.
For community reports, prioritize information that identifies the same game edition and a recent build, and that describes the issue or workaround rather than offering only a yes-or-no verdict. Community curator pages can show reports about games whose official status is uncertain, but those reports may not reflect the current build or your setup.

Why a Windows game may work on Steam Deck
SteamOS is Linux-based, but that does not mean every Steam game needs a Linux version to run on Deck. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer allows the vast majority of Steam’s library to run on SteamOS without developers porting every Windows game. That broad support is not a promise for any individual title: check that game’s own status and caveats. Learn about Steam Deck and SteamOS.

- Official status: Note whether each game is Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown/untested.
- Specific caveats: Compare the listed usability concerns against your own controls and display preferences.
- Review date: A newer compatibility review may be more informative than an older one, since ratings can change.
- Player reports: Prefer recent reports tied to the exact game and build, and treat them as supporting evidence rather than guarantees.
These checks help you judge compatibility evidence; they do not establish that one title performs better than another.
