Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 Switch 2 Direct is over; this archive recaps its major hardware details, features and game announcements. Nintendo announced a June 5, 2025 launch date, a 7.9-inch screen and a lineup led by Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
What was announced at the Switch 2 Direct?
Nintendo presented a closer look at Switch 2 hardware and features, alongside upcoming games. Its official UK Direct archive highlights the principal announcements and also lists third-party games shown during the presentation.

What hardware and features did Nintendo reveal?
Nintendo announced a 7.9-inch screen and 256 GB of internal storage. The system has a new USB-C port on top, an adjustable rear stand, and improved processing and graphics compared with the original Switch. In docked mode, output can reach 4K at up to 60 frames per second; supported lower resolutions can reach up to 120 fps. These are maximum supported outputs, not a guarantee that every game runs at those settings. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 product information for official details.

Joy-Con 2 and mouse controls
Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically. In games that support it, either controller can be used as a mouse on a surface. Nintendo notes that the surface material can affect how the mouse control responds.
GameChat, video and sharing
GameChat supports voice chat for up to 12 people. Up to four people can share screens and use video chat; video requires a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Nintendo said GameChat would be free through March 31, 2026, with a Nintendo Switch Online membership required afterward.

GameShare lets a Switch 2 owner invite others to play a compatible game temporarily through local play. It is not a transfer of ownership or permanent sharing, and Nintendo describes additional restrictions when using GameShare through GameChat.
Accessibility and extra storage
Nintendo announced accessibility options including font and color-tone adjustments, text verbalization and button customization. For expanded storage, Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards; a standard microSD card is not the specified format.

Can Switch 2 play original Switch games?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may be unsupported or may not work fully. Compatibility is therefore title-specific; check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a particular game before relying on it.
When did Switch 2 come out, and what did it cost at launch?
Nintendo announced June 5, 2025 as the launch date. In the United States, Nintendo of America announced suggested retail prices of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle. The bundle included the console and a download code for Mario Kart World. These are historical US announcement prices, not current price quotes. Nintendo’s US announcement gives the original pricing details.
Prices varied by region. Nintendo’s Japan-specific announcement listed 49,980 yen for the system and 53,980 yen for the Mario Kart World set; a multi-language Japanese-store model was listed at 69,980 yen.
