Yes, some commercial Windows games—including several AAA titles—could run on Apple Silicon Macs with Asahi Linux in the alpha announced in October 2024. The announcement covered M1- and M2-series systems running Fedora Asahi Remix 40. It did not establish that every AAA game works, or that the same capability is available on M3 Macs.
What the October 2024 announcement actually offered
Asahi Linux described its gaming toolkit as an alpha: an early compatibility stack that could run selected x86 Windows games on Arm-based Macs under Linux. Fedora Magazine characterized it as preliminary availability on Fedora Asahi Remix 40 in its October 10, 2024 post, “Gaming on Fedora Asahi Remix.” These were project and Fedora announcements, not results from an independent compatibility survey.
The scope matters. The announcement addressed M1- and M2-series Apple Silicon Macs. Its game examples showed that some titles could work through the stack, not that AAA compatibility was comprehensive or guaranteed. A game’s Windows version, graphics API requirements, and memory needs all affect whether it is a practical fit.
How Asahi Linux runs Windows games
A typical target is an x86 Windows game built around DirectX, while the Mac is running Arm Linux and rendering through Vulkan. Asahi’s alpha combined several compatibility layers to bridge those differences:

- DXVK and vkd3d-proton translate DirectX graphics calls into Vulkan.
The announcement described support for Vulkan 1.3 and OpenCL 3.0. Those API capabilities helped make the graphics path possible, but they do not mean every DirectX feature or game is supported.
Why the stack uses a small virtual machine
The game stack also had to address a memory-page-size mismatch: x86 applications expect 4K pages, while Apple systems use 16K pages. Asahi’s workaround was to run games inside a small virtual machine using muvm. The host can retain its 16K page size while the guest presents 4K pages to the game; the VM also passes through the GPU and game-controller devices.
How it handled graphics features
The M1 GPU lacked hardware support for some features required by the graphics APIs, so the alpha used compute shaders to handle tessellation and geometry shaders. Asahi noted that geometry-shader emulation was not fast, though it was sufficient for an example such as Ghostrunner. This is one reason a game launching successfully should not be taken as evidence of good performance across other games.

Which games did Asahi name?
Asahi’s October 2024 announcement used the following titles as examples of what the alpha could do. These are project-reported examples, not independently measured results or a complete compatibility list.

Asahi identified sparse texturing as a next step for Honeykrisp, its graphics driver, saying it would unlock support for more DirectX 12 games. The project also said newer AAA titles did not reach 60 fps in the alpha. That dated statement is not a benchmark for every game or system.
What hardware and setup did the alpha call for?
Asahi said the toolkit worked on M1- and M2-series systems, but cautioned that most games required 16GB of memory because of emulation overhead. Treat that as the project’s October 2024 guidance—not a guarantee that any particular game will run well with 16GB, or a universal minimum for every title.

The release-era installation path published by Asahi was:
- Install Fedora Asahi Remix.
- Update the drivers and reboot with
dnf upgrade --refresh && reboot. - Install Steam with
dnf install steam.
Those commands and package instructions are from the October 2024 alpha announcement; package availability and installation guidance can change. Check current Fedora Asahi Remix documentation before relying on them. A game controller is optional: Asahi said the VM could pass controllers through, but did not identify or test a particular model, so compatibility should not be assumed for every controller.

Does the 2024 gaming claim apply to M3 Macs?
No—not on the evidence of the cited announcements. The gaming alpha described M1 and M2 systems. In a February 2026 progress report on Linux 6.19, Asahi said M3 bring-up remained preliminary: keyboard, touchpad, Wi-Fi, NVMe, and USB 3 were working with local patches, but graphics were software-rendered and very slow while GPU reverse engineering continued. The report also noted that display support and hardware integration still needed work before a shippable general release. That is a dated status snapshot; it does not establish what changed afterward or support an M3 gaming release.

How to judge whether a particular game is worth trying
The alpha announcement does not provide a current, systematic per-game compatibility matrix or head-to-head performance tests. Before choosing Asahi for a game, check the exact title and version, its graphics requirements, the Mac’s generation and memory, and whether the needed DirectX features are supported by the current stack. Compatibility and performance can vary even when another game using the same broad technology works.
Asahi’s own framing for the alpha was: “Correctness comes first. Performance improves next.” That captures the distinction between getting a game to run and having it render correctly and perform well enough to play.
