If you like Splinter Cell for its covert infiltration, careful planning, and tension of staying unseen, start with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It offers the closest fit for adapting a tactical plan in the field. For other kinds of stealth, Hitman: World of Assassination is built around disguises and social spaces, while Thief 2 makes stealth itself the focus. The right choice depends on which part of Splinter Cell you want more of.

Which stealth game should you choose?

Game Best for How it differs from Splinter Cell
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Flexible tactical infiltration Emphasizes freedom to improvise and choose an approach.
Hitman: World of Assassination Social stealth and replayable mission sandboxes Disguises and blending into elaborate spaces replace covert military infiltration as the central conceit.
Thief 2: The Metal Age Stealth-centered first-person play Prioritizes avoiding detection rather than matching a modern espionage-action game.
Dishonored 2 Route freedom and supernatural abilities Trades realistic espionage for a richly designed setting and powers-assisted options.
Mark of the Ninja: Remastered Stealth in 2D Moves the genre into side-scrolling platforming while keeping stealth central.
METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER Story-led Cold War stealth action Its alternate-Cold-War story and survival-era setting are a historical and tonal departure from Splinter Cell.

Best for improvising a tactical infiltration: Metal Gear Solid V

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the most natural pick if you want to study a situation, choose an entry plan, and adjust when things go wrong. Its appeal is the freedom to approach operations in different ways, rather than a single prescribed route. GameSpot and GamesRadar+ both describe it as a stealth-action game with substantial freedom in how the player proceeds.

That makes it a strong match for the planning-and-recovery loop associated with Splinter Cell, but not a duplicate of its modern espionage premise. Choose it when player-directed operations matter more than matching the same setting or tone.

Best for disguises and replayable sandboxes: Hitman: World of Assassination

Hitman: World of Assassination is for players who enjoy reading a space, finding an opening, and passing unnoticed. Its stealth is social: disguises and blending into populated environments are central to how you move through its elaborate missions. The pleasure comes from exploring a sandbox and discovering different ways to carry out an objective, rather than behaving like an armed infiltrator.

#1 Best Overall
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow - Xbox
  • Incredible real movement and control - you can even shift Sam's weight when preparing him for a split jump between two walls
  • Exciting new moves maximize Sam's lethal fighting skills -- spin out of the shadows and kill silently
  • All-new moves and levels - fight in jungles, on rooftops, on top of(and under) a moving train
  • Advanced AI makes it harder than ever to get past enemies - if you reveal yourself they'll get reinforcements and put on armor
  • Weapons now have secondary functions that can be equipped on the fly - be amazed at the advantage you get from the red dot of the laser sight

It is therefore a useful alternative if you like the patience and observation of Splinter Cell but want a different kind of covert play. The disguises and mission structure are the point, not a realistic tactical-shooter substitute.

Best for stealth-first first-person play: Thief 2

Thief 2: The Metal Age is a good choice if avoiding detection is more important to you than having a modern espionage-action toolkit. It shifts the perspective to first person and places stealth at the center of the experience. PC Gamer includes it among notable stealth games.

Rank #2
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD - Playstation 3
  • Includes three great Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell hits, including Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
  • Try to unfold the conspiracy that's been digitally remastered in high definition for even more intense thrills and exciting graphics
  • Jump into the role of Sam Fisher in all three games as you command an arsenal of weapons, gadgets and moves to protect the country
  • Everything from gameplay to cinematic maps, menus and load screens has been visually enhanced to create stunning gameplay
  • 3D stereoscope view creates visuals that pop out of the screen with 3D-enabled televisions

Pick it for a stealth-centered change of pace, not because it recreates Splinter Cell’s tactical-shooter approach.

Best for route freedom and powers: Dishonored 2

Dishonored 2 suits players who want to scout a level and decide how to get through it, but are happy to leave realistic espionage behind. Its richly designed setting and supernatural abilities give you alternatives for navigating challenges, so its flexibility comes from powers as well as route choice.

Rank #3
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory - Xbox
  • To achieve your mission you'll kill from close-range with your combat knife, shoot with a high-tech rifle, and use radical suppression techniques like the inverted neck break
  • Intelligent enemies making your mission more risky as you have to get much, much closer to them
  • Completely replayable -- Totally open level design with multi-paths and optional secondary objectives
  • Strive for ultimate stealth and rank yourself with the all new post-mission statistics and scoring system
  • Extend the game with intense content you can download through Xbox Live

It is a fit if you value freedom of movement and multiple approaches more than a grounded covert-operations setting. PC Gamer and GamesRadar+ both include it among distinct stealth options.

Best 2D change of perspective: Mark of the Ninja: Remastered

Mark of the Ninja: Remastered keeps stealth central while changing the format to 2D side-scrolling platforming. That shift makes it the clearest choice if you want to try a different perspective without giving up stealth as the main appeal. GameSpot and PC Gamer both include it among notable stealth games.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent - Xbox 360 (Renewed)
  • Videogame Console Software XBox 360 Games

Choose it for a deliberate change from three-dimensional infiltration, rather than for a direct match to Splinter Cell’s presentation.

Best for story-led Cold War stealth action: METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER

METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER is a remake with stealth-action gameplay and a story set in an alternate Cold War, according to PlayStation’s editorial guide to stealth games. It offers a story-led option for someone drawn to covert operations, but its survival-era setting is a marked departure from Splinter Cell’s modern espionage premise.

  • Choose Mark of the Ninja: Remastered for stealth in 2D.
  • Choose METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER for story-led alternate-Cold-War stealth action.
