If you want to play Nintendo DS games, a Nintendo 3DS-family system is usually the more flexible choice: Nintendo says most DS games work on it, and it can also play 3DS game cards. But it is not identical to playing on original DS hardware. A few games rely on the DS’s Game Boy Advance slot, DS games display in 2D on 3DS, and their default image is expanded from the original resolution.
Can I play Nintendo DS games on my Nintendo 3DS? In most cases, yes. The specific game, any accessory it needs, and whether you prefer the original screen presentation should determine which system you choose.

Do DS games work on a 3DS?
Nintendo’s US support guidance says all Nintendo DS games are compatible with Nintendo 3DS-family systems except a few that require the AGB (Game Boy Advance) slot. Nintendo UK describes compatibility as “most” DS games and likewise calls out Game Boy Advance Game Pak accessories as an exception. Check the game’s manual if it needs a peripheral; 3DS-family systems cannot use features or accessories that access the DS’s Slot 2. There is also a regional qualification for certain DSi games: Nintendo UK warns that some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not play on a PAL-region 3DS. That warning concerns those DSi titles; it should not be read as a blanket regional restriction on all DS games.

Which is better for playing DS games: DS or 3DS?
If your priority is access to DS games plus the option to play 3DS software, choose a 3DS-family system, provided your particular DS title is compatible. Nintendo says 3DS game cards play only on 3DS-family systems, so the library direction is one-way: DS games can run on supported 3DS hardware, but a DS, DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL cannot run 3DS game cards. Choose original DS hardware if the game depends on a Game Boy Advance-slot accessory, or if you specifically want to play on a DS system. Compatibility alone cannot settle a used-console purchase: the condition, battery health, screen quality, and price of the individual systems vary, and Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not compare those factors.

How do DS games look on a 3DS?
DS and DSi games run in 2D on a 3DS; the system’s stereoscopic 3D effect does not turn DS games into 3D. By default, the image is expanded to fit the 3DS display, which means it is shown at a lower resolution than the original DS presentation. Nintendo’s UK 3DS operations manual says you can hold START or SELECT while launching the game to display it at its original resolution instead. Do not choose a system on the assumption that a DS game’s original online service will still work. Nintendo says its Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, used by certain DS and DSi games, has been discontinued. DS game cards also have legacy wireless-security constraints: Nintendo’s support pages say they do not support WPA for online features and describe requirements involving WEP or no security. Local wireless multiplayer is distinct from internet play and depends on the individual title. Nintendo’s Download Play guidance notes software-family limits—for example, 3DS games connect only between 3DS-family systems, while DSiWare and DSi games connect only between DSi systems. What to check before choosing a system
- Confirm the exact game. Look up its manual and check for a Game Boy Advance-slot accessory requirement.
- Check regional details for DSi games. If the title was bought outside the PAL region and the console is PAL-region, account for Nintendo UK’s stated compatibility caveat.
- Decide which screen presentation you prefer. On 3DS, try the default expanded view and the original-resolution option launched by holding START or SELECT.
- Separate local multiplayer from online service. Confirm the mode supported by the title; Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is discontinued for the affected games.
