The report links those actions to pressure to meet the target; it does not establish that the target was the sole cause of each decision.
What did Bloomberg report about Xbox’s margin target?
On October 23, 2025, Bloomberg reporters Jason Schreier and Dina Bass reported that Microsoft executives had set an across-the-board 30% goal for Xbox gaming division “accountability margins.” Bloomberg said the term is used by Microsoft in place of profit margins. The report attributed the information to people familiar with the business who spoke anonymously; it is not a published audited result or confirmation that Xbox achieved the goal. Bloomberg’s report.
Bloomberg said Xbox’s response included product cancellations, price increases and thousands of job cuts. The reporting presents these as moves made amid pressure to meet the target, rather than proving that one margin goal independently caused every price, staffing or product decision.
How does the reported 30% goal compare with earlier margins?
MobileSyrup’s 2025 summary of Bloomberg’s reporting put the wider game industry’s margin range at 17% to 22% over recent years, and Xbox’s range at 10% to 20% over the six years before the October 2025 report. It also cited a 12% profit margin for Microsoft’s gaming business during the first nine months of fiscal 2022, attributing that figure to court documents. MobileSyrup’s summary.

The specific 30% target and its connection to Xbox’s cuts and price decisions come from Bloomberg’s account based on anonymous sources, not an on-record explanation from Microsoft or Xbox. The available reporting does not establish that the target was the exclusive reason for any individual layoff, cancellation or price change, nor that it was met.
