To make pixel art that works in a retro-style game, choose a consistent visual scale, draw and animate at that scale, then export assets in the format your game engine expects. Keep an editable source project as well as the exported files so you can revise layers and frames later.
Choose a visual scale before drawing
Decide how large characters, props, and environmental details should appear in the game before building a full asset set. Set sprite dimensions to suit that visual scale, then use them consistently across related assets. There is no single correct canvas size for every retro-style game, and the cited documentation does not prescribe one.
Think about the finished game view, not just how an image looks zoomed in inside an editor. A sprite that appears detailed on a large editing canvas may read differently at the size players see it. Check assets in the game as you work and adjust the project’s scale deliberately rather than resizing unrelated sprites arbitrarily at the end.
Create and draw a sprite
A sprite is an image document with a pixel size, color mode, layers, and—if it is animated—frames. In Aseprite’s model, “a sprite consists of a sequence of frames and a stack of layers.” Its Basics documentation walks through creating, drawing, saving, and exporting a sprite.

- Create a sprite: Set its pixel dimensions to the scale you chose for the game.
- Draw at that size: Work within the sprite’s actual pixel grid, and review how the result reads at the intended in-game size.
- Save the editable project: Keep the native project file while you work so layers, frames, and other project information remain available for later changes.
Aseprite is one example of a dedicated pixel-art and animation editor, not a requirement. When choosing a tool, look for pixel-focused drawing features, layer and frame organization, animation preview, export controls, and compatibility with your game engine. The available documentation does not establish a universal best editor.
Organize artwork with layers and frames
Use layers to keep parts of complex artwork manageable. For example, separating components can make it easier to adjust one part without redrawing everything else. A cel is the image associated with one layer at one frame, so a sprite’s timeline organizes cels across its layers and frames.

Build an animation by reviewing frames
Each frame is a still image; a sequence of frames creates an animation. Add and edit frames in the editor timeline, then preview playback to check how the sequence reads. The cited documentation does not set a required frame count or frame rate: choose them for the motion and needs of your game, then evaluate the result in context.
Aseprite’s animation documentation covers its animation workflow, while its help documentation provides an overview of the application’s pixel-art and 2D animation features.

Export assets for the game pipeline
Keep the editable project and export separate deliverables for your game. Depending on how the engine handles artwork, you may need a single PNG, a numbered PNG sequence, or a sprite sheet. Aseprite documents these export paths and related controls in its export documentation.
- Choose the output your workflow needs: Use a PNG for a still image, a numbered PNG sequence for individual animation frames, or a sprite sheet when the importer expects frames arranged together.
- Set export contents: For a sprite sheet, check which visible layers and animation tags are included. Aseprite’s sprite-sheet documentation describes its export controls as well as sheet import settings such as offsets and dimensions.
- Test the exported file in the project: Confirm that the engine reads the sheet layout, frame dimensions, and any associated metadata as intended. Do not assume a layout or metadata format is interchangeable between importers.
For Godot, the Asset Library lists an Aseprite importer plugin that handles exported sprite sheets and metadata: Aseprite Wizard. That is one specific importer example, not a built-in feature or universal workflow; check its compatibility with your project and engine version before relying on it.

Check assets in the actual game
- Scale: Do characters, props, and environments look consistent beside one another?
- Playback: Does the animation read clearly when previewed and when used in the game?
- Export: Does the engine import the expected image or sheet, with the intended frame layout?
- Editability: Is the source project saved separately from the game-ready export?
