What Inspired David Cage’s Detroit: Become Human—and What Was Fiction?

David Cage’s inspirations for Detroit: Become Human included Ray Kurzweil, questions about machine consciousness and an AI music demonstration. Here’s how those ideas shaped the game—and where fiction ends.

David Cage said his thinking for Detroit: Become Human began with Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near and grew into questions about machine intelligence, consciousness and emotion. He also recalled seeing an AI music demonstration. Those were creative prompts for the game—not evidence that conscious machines or humanlike androids are imminent.

What research did David Cage do for Detroit: Become Human?

In a GamesBeat interview published June 29, 2019, and updated June 19, 2025, Cage described The Singularity Is Near as an early starting point for imagining machines that might become more intelligent than humans. From there, he considered two possibilities: intelligence might exist without consciousness, or consciousness might emerge from sufficiently powerful brains, perhaps including artificial ones. The interview presents these as questions that shaped his fiction, not scientific conclusions. Read the GamesBeat interview.

Cage summarized the story’s central question this way: “How will react as a species when another species appears that’s intelligent, that has consciousness and emotions?” He used the imagined encounter with such a species to explore how people might respond.

Did an AI music demonstration inspire the game?

Cage recalled visiting a lab where an algorithm had analyzed hours of jazz piano and then continued in the pianist’s style. He said he could not tell when the performance switched from the person to the algorithm. The interview does not name the lab, the system or when the demonstration occurred, so this is best understood as Cage’s account of something he saw—not independently documented evidence of a particular AI capability.

He said the team also explored whether AI might write books, tell stories, compose music or make paintings, and used some of those ideas in the game. The creative question was what such developments could mean for people; the interview does not establish that current AI has consciousness or humanlike emotions.

What did Cage say about people and technology?

Cage said he was “more worried about human beings then about machines, though.” He described the game’s conflict as deliberately placing androids in the sympathetic role and humans in the antagonistic one. He also pointed to people’s dependence on technology and phones as a theme. These are Cage’s stated views and narrative choices, not a consensus finding about AI or technology.

How did the game’s androids get their look?

In a 2017 PlayStation Blog interview, Cage described the androids as fictional machines designed to feel biological. He said they have “bio-components” that function like organs and blue blood that transports energy. He also described subtle eye movements intended to make them seem alive. These details explain the game’s design language; they do not describe existing general-purpose androids. Read the PlayStation Blog interview.

Cage said the androids’ appearance reflects their jobs, asking, “Why give superpowers to a teacher or to a nurse? It doesn’t make any sense,” The interview also describes a clothing-design process involving 20 people over two years. In the game’s imagined Detroit of 2038, androids are common household and workplace tools; Cage compared their everyday role and range of customization to smartphones. That comparison is worldbuilding, not a forecast of a real android market.

How does the research connect to the game’s story?

Detroit: Become Human follows Kara, Connor and Markus in a branching narrative where player choices affect the characters and Detroit’s fate. The game turns Cage’s questions about intelligence, consciousness and human response into a fictional conflict rather than offering a scientific answer. Quantic Dream’s official page lists a PC version and says the game was previously available on PlayStation 4; its PC requirements are published on that page. See Quantic Dream’s game page.

TIME’s April 23, 2018 hands-on report listed May 25, 2018 as the PS4 launch date and described choice-driven scenes involving Markus and Connor. Those are the reporter’s impressions of the game, not a guarantee of how every player will experience it. Read TIME’s hands-on report.
