Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launched on April 16, 2026, and Nintendo says it is available now. It is a Nintendo Switch game that can also be played on Nintendo Switch 2—not a separately listed Switch 2 edition. A free demo lets you try the island with up to three Mii characters.
When did Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launch?
Nintendo announced the release date on January 29, 2026: Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launched on April 16, 2026. Nintendo’s availability notice confirms the game is available.
The date followed Nintendo’s March 27, 2025 announcement of a new entry for Nintendo Switch with a 2026 release window, and a September 19, 2025 update that narrowed the timing to spring 2026 and presented a trailer. The January announcement supplied the exact date and a deeper look at the game.
Is it a Nintendo Switch 2 game?
Nintendo lists Living the Dream as a Nintendo Switch game and says it is playable on Nintendo Switch 2. That establishes compatibility, not a distinct Switch 2 edition or a separate Switch 2 performance version. Nintendo’s listing also includes handheld, tabletop, and TV play modes. See the Nintendo product page for current listing details.

What do you do in Living the Dream?
You create Mii residents based on yourself, friends, family, or people from your imagination, then shape their island and see how their lives unfold. Residents have individual appearances and personalities; they form relationships, talk, and run into problems while the island changes around them.
Customization is a major part of the experience. You can alter the island and make things for its residents, including items such as food, clothing, buildings, and pets. Nintendo’s January 2026 announcement also describes time passing in line with the real world.

- After over ten years, Tomodachi Life is back! Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream comes to Nintendo Switch on the 16th of April 2026.
- On a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live their own carefree lives. You're in charge of this island, so create anyone you’d like to live here as Mii characters, like ones based on friends, family and even yourself.
- Then, choose their personality, voice, and help your Mii characters enjoy their island life however they see fit. You can see what’s on their minds, help them solve problems, watch them interact, cultivate their friendships and more.
Why does the trailer feel so unpredictable?
The chaos comes from setting up characters and situations rather than scripting every interaction. You decide who lives on the island and what to create, but the residents’ conversations and relationships supply the surprises. Nintendo describes the game’s focus on player-created content in its Ask the Developer interview.
Series director Ryutaro Takahashi said development began with the direction of “leveraging user-generated content”—a system that lets players create content to play with in the game. He also described the series as “the ultimate inside joke game” for people who are close or share things in common; that is Takahashi’s characterization, not a guarantee that every player will find the same moments funny.
