The 15 Best Free VR Games You Could Get in March 2023—and What Changed

SlashGear’s March 2023 roundup named 15 entries but more than 15 experiences. Here’s what it recommended, what changed for VRChat and Rec Room, and why the rest need a current store check.

This is a historical guide to SlashGear’s March 11, 2023 roundup, not a verified list of games you can install today. The original grouped several experiences, so its 15 entries named more than 15 individual titles. Since then, Rec Room’s official service has closed, while VRChat’s official site still describes it as free on multiple platforms. For the other recommendations, current availability and compatibility are not established here.

How to read this March 2023 list

The entries below preserve the roundup’s groupings while distinguishing its descriptions from present-day availability. “Free” did not always mean that every feature was free: the roundup noted paid co-op DLC for Propagation VR and in-app purchases in Bait!. It also described Language Lab as Early Access. Its platform and hardware notes are historical claims, not current compatibility guidance.

The roundup’s older references to the Meta Quest Store may also differ from today’s naming: Meta’s developer FAQ says the store is now called the Meta Horizon Store, and that App Lab content began moving into the unified store on August 5, 2024.

The 15 entries in the original roundup

1. VRChat and Rec Room

The 2023 article contrasted VRChat’s avatar variety with Rec Room’s game-focused feel. Both were described as social spaces with user-created worlds and activities. Their present status differs sharply: VRChat’s official site describes the service as free on Meta Quest, Steam, iOS, Android, Viveport, and Pico, and says a headset is not required for desktop play. Rec Room’s official announcement said its service would close on June 1, 2026, at 12 p.m. Pacific; it is no longer playable through the official service.

4. The Lab and NVIDIA VR Funhouse

These were presented as minigame collections for PC VR. The roundup’s historical compatibility note for NVIDIA VR Funhouse specified an NVIDIA graphics card; check the current listing and system requirements before relying on that old requirement.

What to check before trying one

  • Confirm the current listing. Search the official store or developer page for the exact title; older recommendations do not prove an app is still available.
  • Match the platform. The roundup spans standalone Quest, PC VR, PlayStation VR, browser access, and other paths. A title’s appearance in the list does not mean it runs on every headset.
  • Check the full cost. Look for paid DLC, in-app purchases, or other paid content rather than assuming “free” covers every feature.
  • Verify all required hardware. A PC, console, camera, or specific graphics hardware may be needed, depending on the title. Historical requirements should not substitute for the current listing.

For VRChat specifically, the official site lists Meta Quest, PC via Steam, iOS, Android, Viveport, and Pico. It also says a headset is optional for desktop play, which makes it distinct from recommendations that require a VR setup.
