First identify which PC release and executable you are using, then match the fix to the symptom. Rockstar documented a Steam gta-sa.exe v3.0 problem with missing 16:9 resolutions and said a patch released December 9, 2014 resolved it. If the game offers a widescreen resolution but the picture or HUD still looks wrong, that is a different issue; the classic PC game may need a compatible widescreen plugin.
Start by identifying your version and symptom
These steps concern the classic PC release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. They do not establish a fix for the Definitive Edition, console editions, or mobile versions. Community plugins discussed here are for the PC game, and their compatibility depends on the executable.
Before changing files, note the storefront or edition, executable version, monitor aspect ratio, and exact problem. Is the desired resolution missing from the menu, is the 3D image stretched, is the HUD too wide or oversized, is a cutscene framed incorrectly, or does the game fail to launch? These symptoms can have different causes and remedies.
If Steam does not offer a widescreen resolution
Rockstar’s support article records reports that Steam’s gta-sa.exe v3.0 did not support 16:9 resolutions—including 1280×720, 1600×900, and 1920×1080—while older versions did. Rockstar marked the issue resolved in a patch released on December 9, 2014. Its Steam title update notes also list “Added 1080p Resolution.” See Rockstar’s resolution-issue guidance and the Steam update notes.

This documents the history of the Steam issue, not the state of every current installation. If you use Steam and the resolution is missing, make sure the game is updated and check the executable version. The update note specifically mentions 1080p; it does not promise support for every aspect ratio, ultrawide mode, HUD layout, or cutscene presentation.
If the image or HUD is stretched
A game can offer a widescreen resolution and still display the world, HUD, or cutscenes incorrectly. Resolution availability and correct widescreen presentation are separate problems. For the classic PC game, the directly relevant software category is a widescreen plugin such as ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fixes Pack. The project describes plugins that improve widescreen support in PC games and provides file-based installation instructions.

Check the repository’s current instructions against your storefront and executable before installing. Back up the game folder and saves first, and follow the project’s file-placement guidance rather than assuming every build uses identical files. The project description does not establish compatibility with every installation or guarantee a fix for each cutscene or HUD issue.
Where SilentPatch fits
SilentPatch is a separate community patch for the 3D-era GTA games, including San Andreas. Its project page says the San Andreas contributions require version 1.0 support and preferably support newer Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher binaries. It is a broader game-fix project, not a substitute name for the dedicated Widescreen Fixes Pack.

The maintainer’s July 2026 update discusses additional fixes, including an Advanced Display Settings crash case involving low video memory. Check the current project instructions and binary compatibility before using it. Avoid stacking mods that change the same display behavior; if you already use display-related mods, record them before adding another.
Choose the next step by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Relevant direction |
|---|---|---|
| Widescreen resolution is missing in Steam | Whether the game is updated and which executable version is installed | Rockstar documented the Steam v3.0 issue as resolved by its December 9, 2014 patch; Steam update notes list 1080p support. |
| Resolution is available, but the game image or HUD is stretched | Classic PC edition and executable compatibility | Consult the Widescreen Fixes Pack instructions for that build. |
| General bugs or an Advanced Display Settings crash | Executable version, video-memory circumstances, and existing mods | Check SilentPatch’s current notes and compatibility; it is distinct from the widescreen plugin. |
| Game fails to launch after a change | Files changed and mods installed | Use your backup to restore the original game files, then assess compatibility before trying another change. |
If the problem remains
- Record the setup: write down the storefront or edition, executable version, monitor aspect ratio, and any installed mods.
- Describe one symptom precisely: distinguish a missing menu entry from stretched rendering, HUD distortion, cutscene framing, or a launch failure.
- Check the relevant official or project instructions: use Rockstar’s support notes for the historical Steam resolution issue and the community project’s current repository guidance for plugin compatibility.
- Preserve a recovery path: back up the game folder and saves before modifying files. If the issue began after a mod change, restore the backup before testing a different compatible approach.
The cited sources do not establish a universal fix for every store build, operating system, executable, or mod combination. Keep the executable version and mod list available when seeking further help, and do not replace game files with unofficial executable downloads.
