For most players choosing a new basketball game, NBA 2K27 is the relevant option: it is the current NBA 2K release, available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. The latest NBA Live product listed on EA’s official page is NBA Live 19, released in 2018 for PS4 and Xbox. That makes this a choice between a current annual series entry and an older game—not two current releases. Which one suits you depends on your hardware, preferred modes and whether you want online play.
How do NBA 2K and NBA Live compare today?
The main difference is release recency. Take-Two announced that NBA 2K27 became available worldwide on September 4, 2026. EA’s NBA Live 19 product page lists a September 6, 2018 release date. NBA Live 19 is the latest NBA Live product located on EA’s official page; that fact alone does not establish that EA has formally discontinued the franchise.

Both games have modes for different kinds of basketball play, but feature lists cannot tell you which game feels better to control or is more realistic. The official pages describe what each publisher says its game includes, not a controlled comparison of quality, balance, graphics, bugs or value.
Which platforms can you play them on?

If you own only a newer console, do not assume NBA Live 19 has a native release for it; confirm compatibility and availability for your specific console and copy before buying.

Choose by the way you like to play. The summaries below reflect publisher descriptions, not independent assessments of how well each mode works.
For a career, franchise or team-building focus: NBA 2K27
NBA 2K27’s official feature announcements cover MyCAREER, MyNBA, MyTEAM, The City and WNBA-focused play. Take-Two describes MyCAREER Eras spanning five historical eras, a story mode and the first co-op MyCAREER in franchise history. It also describes MyNBA Legacy as a 100-year universe, plus MyTEAM changes including player XP and auction-house updates. The publisher says a female MyPLAYER can enter the co-ed City. NBA 2K Support’s NBA 2K27 mode breakdown also lists The W and MyWNBA single-player experiences.

For on-court and team-management details, the same support breakdown mentions step-through up-and-unders, expanded dribbling customization, dynamic and advanced layups, a manually timed Dunk Meter, revised defense, improved AI and coaching, and a Season Pass. These are documented features; they do not establish that a particular mechanic is more enjoyable or balanced than NBA Live 19’s.
For street play and a customizable court: NBA Live 19
EA’s NBA Live 19 page highlights The One, League and Street World Tour. It also describes ONE COURT, where players can customize rules and lineups. EA characterizes the game’s play as “1v1 Everywhere” and refers to Real Player Motion; those are publisher descriptions, not independent findings about gameplay quality.

For a quick offline game
NBA 2K Support lists Play Now among NBA 2K27’s offline modes. That makes it a documented choice for a quick offline matchup. The official NBA Live 19 page cited here does not provide a comparable offline-mode list, so check the game’s current mode details if offline play is your deciding factor.
How long will NBA 2K27’s online modes be available?
As of October 5, 2026, 2K’s online services status page schedules NBA 2K27 online features and services through December 31, 2028. The page lists Play Now, MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM, 2KU/Learn 2K, MyWNBA and The W as offline modes. Service schedules can change, so check 2K’s status page before relying on a particular online feature.

No comparable EA NBA Live 19 server-retirement notice is established here. Do not count on its online modes remaining available without checking EA’s current service information and the platform’s status. If you mainly want a game to keep playing offline, weigh the documented offline modes and the game’s age rather than assuming online access will last.

- Choose NBA 2K27 if you want the current release, own one of its listed platforms, or are drawn to its documented MyCAREER, MyNBA, MyTEAM, City or WNBA-focused options.
- Consider NBA Live 19 if you already have compatible PS4 or Xbox hardware and specifically want to try its The One, Street World Tour or customizable ONE COURT modes. Verify a copy is available and check online-service status if you need online play; current stock and pricing are not established here.
- Compare them in person or through dated independent reviews if your deciding factor is control feel, realism, graphics, bugs, monetization or overall value. The official feature pages do not settle those judgments.
Do not carry over NBA 2K26 edition prices, platform entitlements or PS5–Xbox Series X|S crossplay assumptions to NBA 2K27: those details are version-specific, and the cited 2K27 announcement does not establish them for this release.
