Yes—claim a monthly game while it is offered if you might play it later. You do not have to download it straight away. Claiming adds it to your PlayStation Plus library, but it does not make the game a permanent purchase: you need an active membership to play it.
What claiming a PS Plus game actually does
PlayStation says monthly games can be added to your library and downloaded and played later, provided you have an active membership plan. In other words, claiming and installing are separate choices: add the game to your library during its monthly offer, then download it when you are ready. PlayStation’s games FAQ explains the membership condition, and its access instructions cover the monthly games process.

That makes a claim useful as an option for later, not ownership independent of Plus. If you let your membership end, games obtained at no extra cost through the subscription become unavailable through Plus. PlayStation’s UK cancellation guidance describes what happens when the paid membership period ends.
When claiming is worth it
- You may play the game later and expect to keep or renew Plus: claim it before the monthly offer changes. You can decide when to install it afterward.
- You are unsure whether you will like it: claiming preserves the chance to try it later while your membership is active; it does not require an immediate download.
- You expect to cancel permanently and want access regardless: a Plus claim is not enough. Consider buying the game outright only after confirming the platform and edition you want.
Monthly games are not the same as catalog games
All three plans—Essential, Extra and Premium—include monthly games. Extra and Premium also include the Game Catalog, while Premium adds the Classics Catalog. Catalog titles can have announced removal dates, so adding or downloading one should not be treated as the same lasting library entitlement as claiming a monthly game. Check the title’s availability and any removal date on the current PlayStation listing. PlayStation’s FAQ distinguishes the catalogs and notes that some titles have end dates.

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Monthly offers change, too. PlayStation says new monthly games are added each calendar month, so check the current offer in your region rather than relying on an old list. The official monthly-games instructions describe the offer and library access.
What happens if Plus lapses and you return?
During a membership lapse, you cannot play games obtained at no extra cost through Plus. PlayStation’s Sweden membership guide says returning subscribers regain access to content previously downloaded through Plus. That is useful regional corroboration, but policies and availability can vary by region; do not treat a lapse as uninterrupted access. See PlayStation’s Sweden membership guide.

A quick decision check
- Is it a monthly game, and is it still offered? If yes, add it to your library before the offer changes. If it is a Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title, check its listing for an end date.
- Will you have an active membership when you want to play? If you expect to maintain or renew Plus, claiming may be worthwhile. If not, the claim will not provide access during the lapse.
- Do you need access without Plus? A subscription claim does not provide that. If independent access matters, evaluate an outright purchase of the specific game and edition.
PlayStation’s US terms also say that games and benefits can change, and availability may depend on tier, country or region, platform and device; downloaded games require a valid subscription and must remain available in the service. Read the US PS Plus usage terms.
