“Uncopylocked” means the experience creator has enabled access to an editable copy in Roblox Studio. It does not mean the game is open source or automatically cleared for you to republish. On another creator’s experience, look for Roblox’s About-tab notice, “This experience’s source can be copied,” then check permission for your intended use before publishing a copy.
What “uncopylocked” means on Roblox
Roblox experiences are locked for editing by default. An owner can allow other creators to download a place copy, for example to study it or use it as a template. Roblox documents this as an owner-controlled permission, not as a general license for anyone to reuse the game: Roblox Creator Hub: Copying Experiences.
The term describes access to an editable copy in Studio. It does not mean the experience’s source code is publicly licensed, that all embedded assets are reusable, or that the creator has approved a public re-release.
How to tell whether an experience can be copied
On the experience’s details page, open the About tab and look for the notice “This experience’s source can be copied.” Roblox Support identifies this as the signal that copying is enabled. Do not rely on a search result, video title, or community use of “uncopylocked” as proof. The creator’s current permission setting and Roblox’s official notice are more useful checks; the label alone does not establish that a copy is authorized or safe to republish.
How to open and save an eligible experience in Studio
- Go to the experience’s details page and confirm that its About tab says “This experience’s source can be copied.”
- Open the three-dot menu and choose Edit to open the eligible experience in Roblox Studio.
- In Studio, choose File > Save As to save a local copy, or File > Publish to Roblox As to upload a copy to Roblox. The available actions and labels may change; Roblox Support’s copy instructions are the reference for the current workflow: How to Copy an Experience.
For an experience you own, Roblox Support also documents using File > Save As for a local backup or File > Publish to Roblox As to upload a separate copy. These options are useful for backing up or duplicating your own work, independent of whether another creator has enabled copying.

How creators enable copying for a place
If you own the experience and want other creators to access an editable copy, Roblox Creator Hub documents this route in Creator Dashboard:
- Open the experience and go to Configure > Places.
- Select the start place, then open Permissions.
- Enable Allow users to download a copy of this Place and save the change.
After copying is enabled, people can use the experience’s main page menu and choose Edit in Studio. Roblox’s Creator Hub instructions cover the permission setting and access flow: Copying Experiences. Dashboard labels can change, so consult that page if your interface differs.

Copy access is not permission to republish
Roblox Support advises: “Before deciding to publish a copied experience, be sure to first ask permission from the creator.” Treat access and reuse as two separate questions: the copyability notice says the creator has enabled an editable copy; it does not itself grant permission to publicly release your version. Get the creator’s permission for the use you have in mind before publishing.
Third-party intellectual property is a separate check. Roblox’s IP licensing FAQ says creators need explicit rights-holder permission to use IP in a game when a license does not cover it, and recommends removing content that is not covered: Roblox IP Licensing FAQ. A creator’s approval does not necessarily clear someone else’s characters, music, brands, or other protected material.

Do not confuse a copyable game with public-domain assets
Roblox’s public-domain guidance applies to particular Creator Store item types, not automatically to every asset in a copyable experience. The listed types that can be made public domain are models, decals, audio, and plugins; accessories, clothes, hats, and gear cannot be made public domain under that guidance: Roblox Creator Hub: Public Domain.
Even if an experience is copyable, check the creator’s permission for your intended release and any separate license or rights covering assets inside it. A Creator Store asset’s status and an experience’s copy setting answer different questions.

Roblox’s official copying and IP guidance does not rank particular uncopylocked experiences. The most suitable candidate is therefore the one with an official copyability notice and permissions that cover your actual purpose.
