To expand Nintendo Switch 2 storage, the card must be labeled microSD Express. Standard microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards—including ones used with the original Switch—cannot store or load Switch 2 games. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB.
Check the card type and capacity
- Look for “microSD Express” on the card or its packaging. A familiar brand, a large capacity, or a microSDXC label alone does not establish compatibility. Nintendo’s requirement is the microSD Express standard. See Nintendo’s microSD Express Card FAQ and its Switch 2 card compatibility guidance.
- Check the capacity. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. A card above that limit is not within the stated support range.
- Plan for first use. The first time you use a microSD Express card with Switch 2, an internet system update is required.
What a Switch 2 card can store
A compatible microSD Express card can hold downloadable software, software updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and captured videos. Game save data stays in the console’s system memory; the card is not a place to back up or move game saves.
Can you use your original Switch microSD card?
An ordinary microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card from the original Switch cannot save or load digital games or save data on Switch 2. There is a limited media-import use: insert the old card to import screenshots and videos to Switch 2 system memory. It does not become an expandable game-storage card. Nintendo explains this distinction in its compatibility guidance.
Plan for one card and future upgrades
Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card. If you move to a larger card, copy the data to it; software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card. Consider your likely storage needs before dividing your library among cards.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
If Switch 2 does not recognize the card
- Power off the console, remove the card, and reinsert it.
- Confirm the card is microSD Express, not standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC.
- Check the card’s connectors and the console’s card slot for dirt or debris.
- If necessary, format the card. Formatting erases its contents, so back up screenshots and videos first.
Nintendo advises that if multiple microSD Express cards cannot be read, the console needs service. See Nintendo’s card-recognition troubleshooting steps.

Nintendo’s US store lists a Samsung microSD Express Card, 256GB, for Nintendo Switch 2. That listing is an example of the required card type, not an exclusive recommendation: Nintendo says cards meeting the microSD Express standard up to 2 TB can be used. Check that a card’s label says microSD Express before buying; do not rely on brand or capacity alone. View Nintendo’s 256GB Samsung example.
