Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo troubleshoot a slow or disconnecting external SSD on a handheld PC, first check whether the drive is still detected, then test the USB connection path one change at a time. Compare direct connection with a hub or dock, try another port if available, unplug other USB devices, and test the drive on another computer. Those comparisons can narrow down whether the issue follows the drive or stays with the handheld, but they do not prove a particular component is faulty.
Slow game loads and disconnects may have different causes. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal cause or expected load time for external SSDs across handhelds, games, enclosures, and operating systems.
What to note before troubleshooting
Write down the exact handheld model and operating system version, SSD and enclosure models, cable, any hub or dock, the game launcher, and whether the problem occurs on battery, while charging, or in a dock. These details make comparisons meaningful and useful if you contact the device or drive maker.
- Does the SSD disappear from the operating system, or does it remain mounted while a game loads slowly?
- Does the issue occur with one game or several?
- Does it happen only with a particular port, hub, dock, or set of connected accessories?
- Does Wi-Fi or Bluetooth also become unreliable when the drive is connected?
Start with a clean baseline
Restart the handheld, install available operating-system and device updates, and temporarily close third-party utilities or overlays before retesting. On a Windows handheld, use Windows Update and the manufacturer’s official update and support tools for the exact model. On Steam Deck, Steam’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide recommends checking for updates, restarting, and exiting or disabling third-party applications during troubleshooting.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Do not start with a factory reset or registry edits. First establish whether the drive is consistently recognized and whether connection changes affect the symptom.
Check whether the drive is detected
Look in the operating system’s storage view or file manager to confirm that the external SSD is present and mounted. On Steam Deck, open Steam > Settings > Storage. If the drive has disappeared, reconnect it and note any error the operating system shows.
Do not format or repair a drive containing important files until those files are backed up. Steam’s storage guidance helps with storage management, but it is not a universal repair procedure for external SSDs. Its instructions about formatting and supported microSD card classes apply to microSD cards, not external SSD performance.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Isolate the USB connection path
Change one condition at a time so you can tell which comparison matters. Steam Support’s USB connection and contention troubleshooting identifies intermittent disconnections and port-dependent behavior among possible USB scheduling or contention symptoms. That is a possible avenue to investigate, not a confirmed diagnosis of your setup.
- Try a direct connection. If the handheld and enclosure allow it, connect the SSD directly instead of through a hub or dock.
- Try another port. If the handheld has another compatible port, test it with the same drive and cable.
- Remove other USB devices. Disconnect peripherals and retest the SSD. If the issue stops, reconnect devices one at a time to see whether a particular combination brings it back.
- Use a hub as a comparison. If there is no alternate port, try a hub to change the connection path; this is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix or speed upgrade.
- Test another computer. Keep the drive and cable the same if possible, and check whether it remains detected and stable there.
If the disconnections stop after changing ports or removing peripherals, USB connection scheduling or contention is one possibility to investigate. If the drive also disconnects on another computer, check the SSD, enclosure, and cable, and back up data before seeking vendor support. If it works elsewhere but fails on one handheld or port, investigate that handheld’s port, dock, updates, drivers, or support channel. These are diagnostic inferences from comparative tests; no single result by itself identifies the failed component.
Test a hub or dock and its power separately
If your setup uses a hub or dock, compare it with and without other downstream accessories. Also note whether the drive remains connected both with and without the dock’s power connection, where that test is supported by your hardware. Record whether the handheld charges normally during each test.

For Steam Deck, Steam’s Docking the Steam Deck guide says most USB-C-compliant hubs and docks work. Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks may work but are not officially supported. Powering the Deck through a dock requires USB-C Power Delivery passthrough; a dock may reserve part of its power contract for downstream peripherals, which can sometimes produce a slow-charge warning. This dock guidance concerns compatibility and power behavior—it does not show that power delivery is the cause of every SSD disconnection.
When comparing direct connection, a hub, or a dock, record whether the drive mounts reliably, whether disconnects persist, whether removing peripherals changes anything, whether charging and the drive connection remain stable together, and whether the same drive behaves differently on another computer.
On Windows, do not disable USB selective suspend as a generic fix
USB selective suspend allows Windows to suspend an individual USB port while other ports remain active. Microsoft says the setting is enabled by default and states: “Selective suspend is enabled by default. Microsoft strongly recommends not disabling selective suspend.” Its USB Selective Suspend page was updated on May 7, 2025, is primarily for driver developers, and directs end users with USB-C issues to Windows USB-C troubleshooting. Follow Windows and the handheld maker’s current instructions for your model rather than treating selective suspend as an automatic performance fix.

Separate wireless problems from local SSD loading
On Steam Deck, a high-bandwidth USB 3 accessory such as a hard drive can interfere with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios. If wireless performance changes only while the drive is nearby, move the drive and other high-bandwidth USB 3 accessories farther from the Deck. For Wi-Fi trouble, try a 5 GHz access point and reduce proximity to nearby 2.4 GHz devices, following Steam’s Docking the Steam Deck guidance.
Retest local game loads separately from wireless downloads. A download bottleneck is not evidence that the SSD reads slowly, and radio interference is not proof that a local loading problem is caused by the drive’s wireless effects.
Investigate slow game loads when the drive stays connected
If the SSD remains mounted but a game loads slowly, compare the same game and repeatable loading sequence from internal and external storage. Keep the comparison as consistent as possible: note game updates, shader compilation, launcher activity, and background downloads, and repeat the observation rather than relying on a single load.

The official sources cited here do not publish comparable external-SSD game-load benchmarks across handheld models, enclosures, file systems, or games. A USB interface label alone cannot establish a particular game’s loading time or guarantee a universal improvement from switching storage.
When to contact support
Contact the relevant device, enclosure, or SSD maker when controlled comparisons have narrowed the issue but it persists. Share the exact model and OS version, drive and enclosure, cable, hub or dock, charging conditions, error messages, and which tests changed the behavior. Back up important files before attempting any repair that could alter the drive.
