Windows is becoming a bigger part of Xbox, but Microsoft has not announced that Windows PCs will replace Xbox consoles. Its stated direction is convergence: Xbox experiences across console, Windows PC, handheld and cloud. Project Helix, the next first-party Xbox console now in development, is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games.
Is Microsoft replacing Xbox with PC?
No. Microsoft’s announcements point to Xbox and Windows drawing closer together, not to the end of Xbox consoles. In February 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company would renew its commitment to Xbox “starting with console.” Then, on March 11, 2026, Xbox described Project Helix as a next-generation first-party console. Xbox’s Project Helix announcement establishes that a console is in development; it does not establish when consumers can buy it.

The distinction matters: Xbox is a gaming platform and service as well as a dedicated console. Microsoft is extending that platform to Windows PCs and handhelds while continuing to develop console hardware. Its stated aim is to make play and access to games more consistent across screens—not to make every Windows PC a console or every Xbox game a PC game. Sharma’s February 2026 statement also cites more than 500 million monthly active users across Microsoft’s gaming audience; that company-wide figure is not a count of Xbox console players.
What is Project Helix, and will the next Xbox play PC games?
Project Helix is Microsoft’s announced next-generation first-party Xbox console. Xbox says it will play Xbox console and PC games, and that it is being built around a custom AMD system-on-chip, co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). That makes it the clearest sign yet of a console-PC direction built into Xbox hardware.

There is a crucial timing caveat: Xbox said alpha versions of the hardware are planned for developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer-hardware milestone, not a consumer launch date. Microsoft has not announced a retail release date, price or final specifications, so those details cannot yet answer when Project Helix will arrive or exactly how it will work for players. Xbox’s announcement also describes the broader goal of reducing barriers between console and PC games.
How Windows is already part of Xbox
Xbox mode brings a controller-first interface to Windows 11
Xbox mode is a full-screen, controller-optimized interface for Windows gaming. It first appeared on ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. Microsoft said it would begin rolling out to Windows 11 in April 2026 in select markets; that is not a guarantee of availability on every PC or in every region. Its purpose is to make it easier to start and navigate games with a controller while retaining Windows’ broader flexibility. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog describes the rollout.

It is an interface for Windows, not a replacement operating system. Microsoft Support documents Xbox mode settings for handhelds and other PC form factors. On supported handhelds, users can choose a gaming home app and optionally configure the device to start in Xbox mode. Microsoft says that startup setting limits background processes for gaming performance. Players can switch back to the Windows desktop, though Xbox mode shows one window at a time and some desktop shortcuts and window controls work differently. See Microsoft’s Xbox mode support page for supported settings and behavior.
ROG Xbox Ally is an Xbox experience on a Windows handheld—not an Xbox console
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs made by ASUS with Xbox. Unveiled on June 9, 2025, they combine an Xbox full-screen experience and an aggregated gaming library with Windows access to PC storefronts, apps and mods. They are examples of Xbox software and identity expanding onto Windows hardware, not traditional Xbox consoles. Xbox’s announcement of the handhelds explains the partnership and their Windows basis.

What changes for games, storefronts and playing across devices?
Convergence can mean different things depending on the game and device. A Windows PC can offer access to PC storefronts and apps alongside Xbox services; a console has its own console game catalog and interface; cloud gaming can provide another route to supported titles. Storefront availability and whether a particular game runs locally depend on the device and title.
Cross-device continuity is also title-specific. Xbox Play Anywhere lets participating games carry progress between supported Xbox and Windows versions, and a supported game can be bought once for those versions. It does not apply to every Xbox game. In its March 2026 announcement, Xbox reported more than 1,500 games in the Play Anywhere catalog and 500 development teams that had shipped games with it. Those are Xbox’s published figures, not independently audited counts. Xbox’s catalog announcement provides the figures and context.

Will Xbox games run on every Windows PC?
No. Compatibility varies by hardware and by game. On January 21, 2026, Microsoft said more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with Arm-based Windows 11 PCs at that point. That dated figure applies specifically to Arm-based PCs; it is not a promise that all Game Pass or Xbox games work on every Windows computer. Microsoft also said Xbox Cloud Gaming remained an option for titles that did not yet run locally on those devices. Microsoft’s Arm-PC announcement gives the scope of that compatibility claim.
Why AMD matters to Xbox’s hardware plans
On June 19, 2025, Xbox announced a multi-year strategic partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio that includes future first-party consoles and cloud. Project Helix’s custom AMD SoC is a concrete part of that hardware direction. The partnership describes future collaboration, not a consumer product launch, price or complete specification sheet. Xbox has also said it wants a platform that is not locked to one store or one device; the practical game and storefront options will still depend on the product and title. Xbox’s AMD partnership announcement outlines the collaboration.

What the Windows-Xbox convergence means for players
If you play on console, the most important point is that Microsoft has a new first-party console in development, but no public retail date or price for it. If you prefer handheld or PC gaming, Xbox mode and the ROG Xbox Ally show how Xbox services and interface can appear on Windows devices today, with the availability and compatibility limits described above. In either case, the platform is becoming more connected without making every device interchangeable.
Xbox’s announcements establish its direction and intended products; they do not establish how well the strategy will be executed, how players will respond or whether Windows will become the dominant way people experience Xbox. What is confirmed is a broader Xbox ecosystem alongside continued investment in console hardware.
