How to Run VALORANT Smoothly on a Low-End PC: A Practical FPS Guide

Start with your PC’s CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, and real in-game FPS. Use Riot’s requirements as reference tiers, troubleshoot the symptom, and diagnose before upgrading.

To improve VALORANT on a low-end Windows PC, first identify the machine’s CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, current in-game FPS, and realistic FPS target. Compare those details with Riot’s hardware requirements before changing settings or buying parts: its 30, 60, and 144 FPS tiers are reference configurations, not guarantees for every PC or match.

What information should you check first?

Write down these details before troubleshooting. They help distinguish hardware limits from intermittent system problems and make an upgrade decision more specific.

  • CPU and GPU: Find the processor and graphics hardware in Windows Device Manager or Task Manager’s Performance tab.
  • RAM: Record installed memory and, if visible, how much is in use while playing.
  • Windows version: Open Settings > System > About to check your edition and version.
  • Current FPS: Note the frame rate during ordinary play, not just a brief peak. Pay attention to whether it stays low or drops only at particular moments.
  • Target FPS: Choose a target that reflects the hardware you have and the kind of consistency you want. Riot’s listed tiers offer a point of comparison, not a promise.

Also note when the problem happens. Persistently low FPS points toward a different investigation than stuttering or freezing that begins when you switch apps or encounter a system error.

How do Riot’s VALORANT requirements compare with your PC?

Riot’s requirements page lists example CPU and GPU combinations for three performance tiers. Treat them as reference tiers rather than guaranteed results: actual frame rates can vary with the complete PC, software state, and what is happening in a match.

Riot-listed tier Example CPU Example GPU
30 FPS minimum-spec tier Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Intel HD 4000
60 FPS recommended-spec tier Intel i3-4150 GeForce GT 730
144 FPS high-end-spec tier Intel Core i5-9400F GTX 1050 Ti

These are the CPU and GPU examples shown on Riot Games’ requirements page, published September 22, 2025; they are not independent benchmark results. Riot also lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum and notes that a system with a discrete GPU needs at least 1 GB of VRAM. The page specifies 64-bit Windows 10 (build 190415 or later) or 64-bit Windows 11, and DirectX 11 support. Windows 11 also requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot. Check Riot’s current PC hardware requirements for the latest details.

If your PC is below the listed minimum in a key component, that is a more important finding than whether a single tweak appears to help. If it meets one tier’s examples, that still does not establish what FPS it will hold in every situation.

What low-risk troubleshooting is worth trying?

Close unnecessary background programs

Programs running alongside a game can contribute to system or launch problems. Close applications you do not need, then see whether the original issue changes. Riot includes background-process checks in its launch-crash troubleshooting, but that guidance does not establish that closing any particular program will raise in-match FPS on every PC.

Check graphics drivers when the symptoms fit

If VALORANT has launch errors, crashes, or a graphics-related system problem, check whether the graphics driver is current for your GPU. Riot’s launch guidance includes graphics-driver troubleshooting in that context; it is not a measured FPS optimization or a guarantee of smoother gameplay. Use the support instructions relevant to your issue at Riot’s game-launch crash troubleshooting page.

Does VALORANT stutter when you use Alt+Tab?

If the stutter or freeze occurs specifically while switching between VALORANT and another app, follow the targeted Windows multitasking and display troubleshooting in Riot’s Alt+Tab support guide. It identifies Windows multitasking and display behavior as possible sources of problems during app switching. This is a focused branch for that symptom, not a required change for every player or a universal in-game FPS fix.

When should you consider a hardware upgrade?

Consider an upgrade only after comparing your actual PC with the relevant Riot tier and identifying a likely limitation. Riot separates CPU and GPU examples across its tiers, but does not prescribe a universal replacement part. A broad guide cannot determine which component is holding back a particular desktop or laptop.

Before buying anything, check:

  • Likely bottleneck: Is the CPU or GPU the more relevant limitation for your target? Do not assume from a low FPS number alone.
  • Compatibility: Confirm the specific PC supports the proposed component, including physical space, power, connectors, cooling, and platform constraints where applicable.
  • Target: Decide which Riot-listed tier is a useful reference for your goal, while remembering it is not a guaranteed frame rate.
  • Total cost: Compare the complete cost of a compatible change, not just the component’s sticker price. If compatibility or diagnosis is unclear, get advice based on the exact PC model and parts.

Without the computer’s model and component details, naming a CPU or graphics card would be guesswork. Diagnose the machine first, then weigh a compatible upgrade against the performance tier you want.
