DJI’s RoboMaster S1 combines a programmable mobile robot with camera-based control and battle-style play. A 2019 ExtremeTech article confirms the device was covered as a hands-on product, but its full observations are not available in the evidence here; this article therefore describes the S1’s documented design without inventing a review verdict or personal testing experience.
What the RoboMaster S1 is
The RoboMaster S1 is an educational robot from DJI, developed in connection with the company’s RoboMaster competition. Contemporary reporting in June 2019 said DJI described the S1 as a two-year development effort inspired by that competition. Engadget’s June 2019 coverage provides that historical context.
Its central idea is to make programming and robot control part of a game-like machine: the S1 moves around, aims a camera-mounted gimbal, and participates in play modes built around blaster effects and hit detection. That combination is the product’s proposition, not proof that it delivers a particular learning outcome or performs better than other educational robots.
How its hardware and play features fit together
Movement and modular components
GoDron’s product overview describes a modular design with 46 programmable components and mecanum wheels for 4×4 omnidirectional movement. Mecanum wheels are intended to let a robot move in multiple directions without first turning its chassis, a useful capability for maneuvering in confined spaces. The overview does not independently establish how easily the robot is assembled or how it performs in real use.

Camera, gimbal, and battle-style effects
The S1 has a camera on a two-axis gimbal, allowing the camera’s viewing direction to be adjusted separately from the robot’s chassis. Its blaster is described as tracing its path with light and using gel beads or infrared effects, while six intelligent armor panels register hits. These details come from GoDron’s product overview; they are not independent safety testing or a substitute for current manufacturer instructions.
Programming and recognition
The same overview lists Scratch and Python programming, AI recognition functions, customizable components, and learning materials. These are features presented as part of the S1’s educational offering. The available evidence does not establish the depth of the lessons, the current state of its software, or the results a particular learner can expect.

For battle-style play, use the instructions supplied for the specific unit and its accessories. The description of light, gel-bead, and infrared effects does not establish that every use is harmless or that supervision is unnecessary. The most supportable way to view the RoboMaster S1 is as a robot whose design brings together programmable movement, camera control, and game-like feedback.
