Minecraft Dungeons II—also styled Minecraft Dungeons 2—launched on September 29, 2026. It is a narrative-driven action-RPG adventure set in the Minecraft universe, available on Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Players can go alone or team up in local, online cross-play or mixed local-and-online co-op.
What Minecraft Dungeons II is
The sequel takes players through unexplored locations to confront a new threat to two worlds. Unlike Minecraft’s open-ended sandbox, Dungeons II is a story-led adventure centered on combat, exploration and gear progression in Minecraft-themed areas. Minecraft says newcomers do not need to play the first Dungeons; returning players may recognize references. Minecraft’s official overview describes the game and its story.
The sequel expands on the first game rather than continuing its sandbox format. Xbox Wire describes an all-new story, an Overworld map, additional gear slots and other changes. Mojang Design Director Laura De Llorens said the team developed ideas for expanding the original into a separate game, with quests, new items and systems for customizing gear. Where the story takes place
The Overworld and the Sift
The adventure spans the Overworld and the Sift, a previously unknown dimension beyond it. Official descriptions present the Sift as a place of unfamiliar environments, mobs, mysteries, hazardous blocks and shifting conditions. Xbox Wire has identified Meadows and Carapace as Sift biomes while keeping other areas secret. Its report also says the Sift is planned to come to Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027; access and timing details had not been announced in that report, so this is a plan rather than a confirmed date or feature list. The Illager Council
In an official Xbox podcast interview, De Llorens described the Illager Council as three Illagers who gained power and chose to misuse it. She also said the story involves an environmental crisis. Side quests and conversations with non-player characters reveal more about the antagonists as players explore. These are the developer’s descriptions of the story, not independent commentary. What changes in exploration and combat
Jumping is new to the series, allowing players to reach vertical spaces and find hidden areas, according to De Llorens. The world is connected rather than divided into only separate mission spaces: she said players can walk from its beginning to its end, with fast travel available alongside quests. The design gives exploration a larger role while preserving combat as the core activity.

Expanded item and gear systems, including new gear slots, are intended to let players shape combat around their preferred style. The official Xbox coverage also emphasizes exploration, combat and gear customization. The available descriptions establish these design goals, but do not provide a complete gear list or detailed explanation of every system.
Co-op modes and supported platforms
The game supports solo play and parties of up to four players. Official sources list couch co-op, online play with cross-play, and mixed co-op that combines local and online players; the official podcast also mentions matchmaking. Launch date, Game Pass and digital editions
Xbox gives September 29, 2026 as the release date and says the game is included with Game Pass. Xbox’s digital store lists Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions. The official listing describes Ultimate as an upgrade from Standard to the digital Deluxe edition. Minecraft describes a Hero Cape promotion for people who have played the first Minecraft Dungeons and log into Dungeons II with the same Microsoft account before December 31, 2026. The page says Game Pass and Steam players may qualify when they used the same account, and sets out additional account, internet, geography and service terms. Eligibility can depend on those conditions; consult the current official promotion terms rather than assuming that prior ownership alone qualifies.

What is still unconfirmed
The official materials cited here establish the launch, platforms, broad co-op options, editions and the planned 2027 Sift crossover. They do not establish review consensus, sales figures, player counts, performance benchmarks, edition prices or whether every platform has identical feature availability.
