Nintendo has announced exploration, collectibles, offline rankings and local and online play, but the game is not scheduled to launch until October 22, 2026. This is a preview of announced features—not a hands-on review of how they feel to play.
What is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Nintendo describes Nintendo Switch Sports Resort as an exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 entry in the series, scheduled for October 22, 2026. Its June announcement calls it a return to Wuhu Island, the resort setting introduced in the Wii-era Wii Sports Resort. Nintendo’s earlier game manual establishes that island connection; current announcements do not establish that the new game reuses the old map exactly or continues its story.

The pitch has two parts: a collection of motion-controlled sports and a wider island layer for exploring, collecting and progressing through offline rankings. Nintendo’s announcements explain the activities, but not enough to judge control quality, balance, stability or how substantial the island will feel in practice.
Which sports are announced?
Nintendo lists 12 sports and describes their basic actions. These are publisher descriptions of intended play, not independently verified accounts of how the controls work.

What can you do around Wuhu Island?
Nintendo’s September 15 announcement presents Wuhu Island as more than a match backdrop. It says players can freely explore, chase dolphins, search for hidden hibiscus flowers and collect Spocco Photos that describe sightseeing spots. Playing sports earns Spocco Points, which can be exchanged for character customization items.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
The announcement also describes Island Crown, an offline mode in which players rise through sport rankings to challenge Island Champions and Island Legends. Nintendo has not specified the island’s size, how many activities or items it contains, or the detailed structure of exploration and progression. The announced feature list establishes a broader island activity layer, but not its eventual depth.
How do motion controls and multiplayer work?
Nintendo says the game uses Joy-Con 2 controllers and identifies different control ideas for individual sports, including mouse controls for skateboarding, handlebars for Power Cruising and tilting for Prop Plane. The US listing says local play supports one to four players in TV and tabletop modes. It also says each multiplayer participant needs one compatible controller and that additional controllers may be required.

The listings reviewed do not specify the exact controller setup for every sport or mode. Nintendo Australia’s product listing says handheld mode is not supported. Check the current listing for your region and the mode you plan to use before buying, particularly if you want to play in a group or without a TV.

Nintendo says online features require an internet connection and a Nintendo Account. Its US listing says online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and may not be available in every country. Save Data Cloud is also listed, with a paid membership required for that feature. Regional availability and terms can differ, so consult the live listing for your country.

- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.

What are the purchase options?
Format and pricing depend on region. Nintendo Japan’s June 10 announcement lists a packaged edition at ¥6,980 and a download edition at ¥5,980. Those are Japan-specific prices, not global pricing. Check a local retailer or Nintendo’s regional store for availability and current prices.
Nintendo has also announced a Nintendo Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle for the October 22, 2026 launch. The US listing describes a Nintendo Switch 2 console, a full digital download of the game and a three-month Nintendo Switch Online Individual membership. It does not describe a physical game copy. The bundle is a separate option for buyers who also need the console; its announced contents should not be mistaken for the contents of a standalone game edition.

What this preview can—and cannot—tell you
Before launch, the clearest case for the game is its announced combination of 12 varied sports, Wuhu Island activities and offline progression. Its fit for a particular player will depend on details that Nintendo has not established in the announcements: how accurately the sports respond to motion controls, how the activities connect, and how much there is to do after the initial tour of the island. Those are questions for release, not conclusions this preview can responsibly make.
