What it is
Massive Chalice is a turn-based strategy game from Double Fine, set during a war against a mysterious enemy called the Cadence. You rule a nation across a 300-year conflict, directing heroes and making decisions that can shape the fight far into the future. Heroes age and eventually die, so your party changes over time rather than staying fixed. You can arrange marriages between heroes to create children whose randomly assigned genetic traits may carry strengths or weaknesses from their parents. This bloodline system makes family choices part of building future forces. A fallen hero’s weapon may also become a relic that can be passed to another member of the same house. Battles are single-player, with Steam achievements, full controller support, captions, Steam Cloud, trading cards, and Family Sharing listed. The game is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
What players like, and what they don't
- Plan across a 300-year war
- Hero marriages shape inherited traits
- Weapons may become house relics
- Full controller support and Steam Cloud
- Single-player only
- Heroes age and eventually die
Who it suits
It suits players who enjoy turn-based strategy and planning beyond the current battle. Its aging heroes, inherited traits, and single-player focus may appeal to those who want to manage a changing roster over a long campaign.
Massive Chalice ties tactical battles to long-term choices about heroes and their descendants. Expect to adapt as aging and permadeath change the group available to fight.
