The circle likely represents a controller button, but Microsoft’s documentation does not confirm this exact wording. If you do not want the prompt, first turn off the setting that lets the Xbox button on a controller open Game Bar.
What the “Select ◯” popup means
Xbox Game Bar is Windows’ built-in overlay for gaming features such as recording clips. You can open it with Windows key + G; Microsoft documents Windows key + Alt + R as the shortcut to start or stop a recording. Its capture feature can record games and apps, with recordings saved as MP4 files in Videos > Captures. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar guide covers these controls for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
If the message appears alongside the Game Bar interface or just after you press a controller button, it is likely a controller-oriented prompt from that feature. The exact phrase and the meaning of its ◯ symbol are not confirmed in Microsoft’s documentation, however, and similar messages can come from a game, launcher, or another overlay.
Check which overlay is showing it
- Press Windows key + G. If the Game Bar interface appears, the prompt may be associated with it.
- Notice whether the message follows a controller button press, particularly the Xbox button.
- If it appears in a game-specific interface or Game Bar is not involved, check the game and other overlays before changing Windows settings.
A prompt appearing with Game Bar in a gaming context is normally a legitimate Windows feature. Investigate further if it appears outside gaming, comes with browser redirects, unrelated ads, or payment requests, or continues after you disable Game Bar’s controller launch option.

How to stop the popup in Windows 11
The least disruptive fix is to stop the controller’s Xbox button from opening Game Bar. This preserves keyboard access to the overlay where that option remains available.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Gaming, then Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn off the option that lets the Xbox button on a controller open Xbox Game Bar.
- Close Settings, restart the game, and check whether the prompt returns.
Windows 11 labels and menu layouts can vary by release, region, language, and Xbox Game Bar version. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for Xbox Game Bar and open the matching settings page. If the controller still seems to trigger prompts, check for a stuck or faulty button, or disconnect the controller briefly to compare.

To dismiss a prompt already on screen, try Esc or click elsewhere. You can also press Windows key + G to open Game Bar and then close the overlay. If recording is active, press Windows key + Alt + R to stop it; that shortcut stops a recording, but is not a setting for suppressing the popup.
How to disable Game Bar features more broadly
Disabling controller activation is different from turning off capture features or disabling Game Bar access altogether. If the concern is unwanted recording rather than the prompt, look in Settings under Gaming for capture or background-recording controls and turn off the relevant option if available. The exact controls depend on the Windows build and app version.

Broader changes can also remove convenient access to Game Bar recording, screenshots, widgets, or related shortcuts. Turning off background capture does not necessarily disable the overlay, and turning off controller activation does not necessarily disable every Game Bar function or another company’s overlay. Removing or resetting the app is more disruptive and is usually unnecessary as a first step; avoid registry edits or removal commands for this ordinary settings issue.

- Launch the game or app you want to record.
- Press Windows key + Alt + R to start recording.
- Press Windows key + Alt + M to toggle the microphone during recording.
- Press Windows key + Alt + R again to stop recording.
- Open Videos > Captures to find the MP4 file.
You can also press Windows key + G, open the capture controls, and use the recording control in the Game Bar widget. Recording availability may vary for protected content or unsupported desktop surfaces.
What to do if the popup keeps appearing
If turning off controller activation does not help, compare what happens with Game Bar and other overlays closed. Temporarily close or disable overlays and capture tools one at a time, then test the game again:
- NVIDIA in-game overlay or AMD Adrenalin recording overlay
- Steam or Discord overlay
- OBS or another capture utility
- A laptop manufacturer’s gaming utility
- Controller-management software
This is a way to identify which program is displaying the message, not evidence that any one of these tools uses the exact wording. If Game Bar appears to be involved, check its settings again and, if necessary, use its app repair options.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox Game Bar, open its menu, and choose Advanced options if available.
- Try Repair first. If that does not help, consider Reset, which may clear app data or settings.
- Restart Windows and test the game again.
What to check if recording does not work
- Game Bar will not open: Press Windows key + G to test it, then confirm that Game Bar is enabled in Settings. A managed work or school PC may restrict access.
- The popup appears, but recording fails: Confirm that Game Bar is enabled and that the target game or app can be captured. Restart the game after changing settings.
- No clip appears: Check Videos > Captures, confirm the folder exists, and make sure the drive has free space.
- Microphone audio is missing: Check microphone access in Windows privacy settings and make sure the microphone is enabled during the capture; Windows key + Alt + M toggles it while recording.
- A shortcut does something unexpected: Another application may have taken over the shortcut. Close overlays and capture utilities one at a time to find a conflict.
- The controls seem broken: Update Windows and Xbox Game Bar through Microsoft’s normal update channels, then try the app’s Repair option if available.
