What it is

RPGMaker Save Editor (RMSE) is a free, open-source tool for editing save files from RPG Maker MV and MZ. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, with a Node.js backend and an Electron graphical interface. Load a save by dragging it in from a file browser or selecting it through a file dialog. RMSE lets you edit items, armor, and weapons, add inventory entries from a dropdown, and change stats for characters in the active party. For data it does not interpret, including values from custom plugins, you can export the save as raw JSON, make manual changes, and load the JSON back in. Before a save is overwritten, RMSE creates a backup and retains the five newest backups in a .rmsebackups folder beside the saves. Save files must be written inside the game directory, though exported JSON can be placed anywhere. The project has an Apache-2.0 license and no packaged releases. Setup is documented as cloning the repository, installing dependencies with npm, and running npm start. Its README cautions that changing internal variables or switches can damage a save.

Good, and not so good

  • Edits items, armor, weapons, and active-party character stats
  • Imports and exports raw save JSON
  • Keeps the five newest save backups
  • Runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows
  • Supports MV and MZ; older versions are not planned
  • No packaged releases are listed
  • Save files must remain inside the game directory

Who it suits

RMSE suits RPG Maker MV and MZ players who want to edit inventory or active-party character stats. It also supports manual raw-JSON edits for values the editor does not interpret.

RMSE covers common inventory and character edits, with raw JSON available for unsupported values. It requires repository setup, and changes to internal variables or switches can damage a save.
