Overview

Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) is a free, open-source mod manager for Windows. It helps players install and remove mods, organize them into profiles, and manage collections of any size. Its defining approach is virtualization: MO2 presents mods to a game without directly deploying them into the game’s files. The project describes itself as a virtualized manager for Bethesda games, while also supporting a range of PC games.

MO2 supports 64-bit games including Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4, as well as the 32-bit games supported by the original Mod Organizer. A built-in source-access feature and conflict detection support mod experimentation, while the basic games plugin can check archive layouts and correct them for automatic installation.

The project is open and community-maintained, but it is not complete and still has many issues. Documentation is sparse; the project points users toward the Mod Organizer 1 wiki for general guidance, with a warning that details may differ. Downloads are offered through GitHub Releases and Nexus Mods. The installer is generally the easier setup route and can also create a portable installation.

Platforms

MO2 is for Windows. Version 2.5.0 requires Windows 10 version 1809 or newer, or Windows 11, following its move to Qt 6 and Python 3.11. Windows Store and Game Pass versions of supported games are not compatible because their packaging does not work with MO2’s virtual filesystem.

Its game support covers 64-bit titles such as Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4, along with the 32-bit titles supported by MO1. The basic games plugin can find games installed through several major PC launchers, including Steam, GOG, Origin, Epic Games or Legendary, and EA Desktop.

Who it's for

MO2 is aimed at Windows players who experiment with mods and want to keep collections organized through profiles and virtual deployment. It is particularly relevant to players of supported Bethesda games. Users should be prepared for sparse documentation and a project that remains unfinished; those who want to contribute can report issues or join development discussions through GitHub or Discord.

Handles collections of arbitrary size and supports both specified 64-bit games and MO1-compatible 32-bit games.
Community channels are available for issue reporting, development discussion, testing, and translation work.

Cons

The project is unfinished and has many issues.
Documentation is sparse, and the suggested MO1 wiki may not fully match MO2.
Windows Store and Game Pass versions of supported games are incompatible with the virtual filesystem.
Version 2.5.0 requires Windows 10 1809 or newer, or Windows 11.

Verdict

Mod Organizer 2 offers a free, open-source way for Windows players to manage large mod collections with profiles, conflict detection, and virtual deployment. Its stated game support and launcher discovery make it a practical option for players whose titles fit its supported setup. The trade-offs are meaningful: the project remains unfinished, documentation is limited, and Store or Game Pass game installations are excluded. It suits mod experimenters comfortable with a community-maintained tool and some uncertainty; users seeking comprehensive documentation or those playing Store and Game Pass versions should look elsewhere.
