Overview

Crafty covers the recurring work of running a Minecraft community: creating and starting servers, changing settings, managing players and files, issuing commands, and making backups. Java servers run from JAR files, and Bedrock servers can run from executables. That breadth makes it a practical choice for self-hosters who want a central panel rather than a paid hosting service.

The GPL v3 license permits inspection and modification of the source. Crafty stores data on the machine where it is self-hosted. The maker says passwords use Argon2 hashing and the web server defaults to an SSL-secured certificate. Optional multi-factor authentication requires version 4.4.8 or later; passkey login requires version 4.8.0 or later.

Key features

Role-based access lets an administrator grant users access to selected servers and decide whether they can use commands, terminal, logs, backups, files, configuration, and player controls. This is useful for dividing operational duties without giving every community member the same reach.

The backup manager supports schedules, configurable storage locations, retention counts, exclusions, downloads, and restores. The maker recommends shutting a server down during backups to reduce the risk of data loss or corruption, so scheduled backups do not remove the need to plan around server activity.

Webhooks can send server notifications to Slack, Mattermost, Discord, and Teams, and Open-Metrics (Prometheus) is among the documented monitoring features. Provider rate limits can delay or prevent webhook delivery, so notifications should not be treated as guaranteed. Crafty also supports server imports, a web file manager, and scheduled backups, but does not provide SFTP access.

Pricing

The Crafty Controller plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It is free both in cost and as free software, with no trial period or paid tier needed to access the panel. That makes it a strong fit for communities prepared to supply and manage their own host; the price does not include a managed server or remove the work of maintaining one.

Platforms

Crafty is available as a self-hosted web panel and supports Linux, macOS, and Windows environments; Android and iOS access is through its progressive web app. The mobile experience requires a CA-verifiable certificate for most features. Reaching a self-hosted instance remotely may also require port forwarding and a reverse proxy, adding setup and security responsibilities.

It supports Minecraft Java, Bedrock, JAR-based Minecraft servers, Bedrock executables, Forge, and NeoForge. Java versions older than 1.8 are unsupported and run at the user's own risk. The maker offers free volunteer support through Discord, while untested operating system environments are not directly supported.

Who it's for

Crafty is best for Minecraft administrators who can manage a self-hosted machine and want detailed control over server access, backups, and files without a license cost. Its roles are useful to communities with multiple operators, and its backup options suit administrators who want to define retention and storage behavior. It is a weaker fit for anyone who expects managed hosting, SFTP, guaranteed webhook delivery, or hands-off remote access.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and GPL v3, with source that can be inspected and modified; useful for communities that want ownership and flexibility without a panel fee.
Pros: Server, player, file, command, and backup controls are brought together, including role-based limits for shared administration.
Cons: Self-hosting means the operator must handle the host and potentially port forwarding and reverse-proxy configuration for remote use.
Cons: No SFTP access, and older-than-1.8 Java versions are unsupported.
Cons: Backup safety may require shutting down a server, while webhook delivery can be delayed or lost under provider rate limits.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Game server control panels. Consider Multicraft if you want a freemium panel with a free personal-use plan covering unlimited game servers and players on one machine per panel, or a paid Dynamic plan at 1.62 USD per month. Zomboid Control Panel is a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted option for readers focused on that tool.

GameAP is another free, open-source self-hosted game-server management panel. HaruHost has a free personal-use plan; its terms identify Raidenku MB as the operating business and specify Lithuanian law. MineOS.net is a free open-source community project for readers considering another community-developed option.

GameCP may suit readers who want to try a time-limited Community plan: it is free for 14 days and covers one node and three game servers, with Community Support. Minepanel is a free, MIT-licensed self-hosted option for multiple servers as hardware allows. Pelican Panel is free to use forever and open source on GitHub.

Verdict

Choose Crafty Controller if you run Minecraft servers on infrastructure you control and want a free panel with granular roles, file management, and configurable backups. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of practical server controls and an inspectable GPL v3 codebase at no cost. Look elsewhere if you need SFTP, support for Java older than 1.8, or a service that takes host and remote-access administration off your hands.
