Overview

CurseForge is a Minecraft mod and modpack catalog operated as part of the Overwolf family. It is best for players who want one large source for browsing, checking dependencies and sharing Minecraft setups. The free catalog is the strongest reason to use it; Premium is a convenience upgrade for users who want fewer ads and direct downloads.

The catalog displays more than 10,000 Minecraft projects. Its mods are described as free, so a subscription is not a prerequisite for discovering or downloading them.

Key features

Browse projects for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, with game-version filters and dependency information to help narrow choices and understand what a mod requires. Download tracking and collections support ongoing setup management. These tools make a broad catalog more workable, though players still need to choose versions and combinations suited to their own setup.

CurseForge also supports modpack exports as CurseForge .zip files and sharing by profile code, alongside built-in publishing, server tools and API access. That breadth is useful for communities coordinating a setup, not just individuals looking for one mod. The service runs on the web and desktop, with desktop support for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Premium removes ads across CurseForge platforms and its desktop client, and offers direct downloads without waiting delays. Desktop subscribers also get custom themes and layout customization. These are practical quality-of-life additions, but they do not unlock the free Minecraft catalog.

CurseForge says authors receive 70% of subscription income and cites more than $18 million paid to creators since 2020 and over $20 million overall. That gives Premium a creator-support dimension in addition to its convenience features.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes web catalog access to free Minecraft mods and modpacks. It is the sensible choice for players who can tolerate ads and download delays and do not need Premium desktop customization.

Premium Monthly costs $2.99 per month, billed monthly, and includes an ad-free experience, instant downloads and Premium web and desktop access. It suits players who want those benefits without an annual commitment. Subscribers can cancel at any time and retain access through the billing cycle; after Premium ends, the account returns to free membership.

The annual subscription is advertised at $2.50 per month when billed annually, or $30.00 per year, listed against $35.88, with a claimed 16% saving. It includes the same Premium benefits and fits regular users comfortable paying for a year upfront. The annual price lowers the monthly equivalent but gives up the flexibility of monthly billing. Refunds are generally not offered, though exceptions are considered individually. Tebex processes Premium subscription payments.

Platforms

The catalog is available on the web, and Premium access also covers the desktop client. The client supports Windows, macOS and Linux, giving players who prefer desktop access an option beyond browser browsing. Premium's ad removal applies across CurseForge platforms and the desktop client.

Who it's for

CurseForge is a strong fit for Minecraft players who browse across multiple loaders, need game-version and dependency details, or share modpack setups with others. Communities can benefit from profile-code sharing and server tools. Players focused only on a single download may find the collection, publishing and sharing features unnecessary, while anyone satisfied with the free catalog has little reason to subscribe.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 10,000 Minecraft projects and four supported loaders give players a broad place to search.
Pros: Version filters, dependency information and collections help players assess and organize mod choices.
Pros: Modpack exports and profile-code sharing help groups distribute a setup.
Cons: Premium mainly adds convenience benefits; the mods remain free, so ad removal and direct downloads may not justify a recurring charge for occasional users.
Cons: The lower annual rate requires yearly billing, and refunds are generally unavailable.

Alternatives

Modrinth is worth considering for players who want another freemium mod platform with a free trial and a paid Modrinth+ plan at 4.99 USD per month that includes ad-free browsing and creator support. Vortex is a free, open-source option from Nexus Mods for players seeking a mod manager rather than CurseForge's Minecraft-focused catalog.

Modrix, Mod Organizer 2, FlairX Mod Manager, RimSort, Corkscrew and Zephyr are other free mod-manager options.

Verdict

Choose CurseForge if you want a large Minecraft catalog with loader and version browsing, dependency context and practical ways to share modpacks. Its free access makes it easy to recommend for discovery and community setups. Look elsewhere if your priority is a different mod-management workflow, or stick with Free if Premium's ad removal, direct downloads and desktop customization are not worth an ongoing subscription.
