These are the ten best action games for most PC players as of August 18, 2026. The ranking spans action RPGs, first-person shooters, character-action games, roguelikes, co-op shooters, hunting games and mech combat, because “action game” describes several excellent ways to play rather than one narrow format. Combat quality, depth, PC suitability, replay value and audience fit matter more here than release date or review averages.

1. Elden Ring
Best for broad exploration and experimentation
Elden Ring is the strongest all-purpose recommendation. Its enormous world rewards curiosity with optional dungeons, hidden routes and varied bosses, while melee, ranged attacks, magic, stealth-like approaches, mounted combat, summons and flexible builds let you solve difficult encounters in different ways.
- Exceptional exploration and environmental discovery
- Huge build variety and replay value
- Summons, leveling and exploration provide practical difficulty relief
- Shadow of the Erdtree adds a substantial expansion, but it is not required for the base game
Opaque quests, difficulty spikes, occasional camera problems and some repeated open-world encounters are real drawbacks. New players should start with the base game; returning players who want the complete package should consider a bundle including the expansion. A controller is usually the most comfortable input, and official requirements on the Steam page should be checked against your hardware.
2. DOOM: The Dark Ages
Best for aggressive single-player shooting
DOOM: The Dark Ages builds its action around forward momentum, weapon switching, shield-based defense and constant health-and-armor management. It is the best current choice for a modern, heavily staged single-player shooter with a medieval-metal identity.
#1 Best Overall
- The next-generation optical HERO sensor delivers incredible performance and up to 10x the power efficiency over previous generations, with 400 IPS precision and up to 12,000 DPI sensitivity
- Ultra-fast LIGHTSPEED wireless technology gives you a lag-free gaming experience, delivering incredible responsiveness and reliability with 1 ms report rate for competition-level performance
- G305 wireless mouse boasts an incredible 250 hours of continuous gameplay on just 1 AA battery; switch to Endurance mode via Logitech G HUB software and extend battery life up to 9 months
- Wireless does not have to mean heavy, G305 lightweight mouse provides high maneuverability coming in at only 3.4 oz thanks to efficient lightweight mechanical design and ultra-efficient battery usage
- The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere
The campaign includes large environments and exploration without losing the arena-combat rhythm. It is violent and visually intense, and its heavier feel will not suit players who prefer the more acrobatic movement of DOOM Eternal. Consult Bethesda’s official PC specifications before buying; demanding releases can change their hardware behavior with patches and drivers. PC access includes Steam, Battle.net and eligible Game Pass plans; confirm the current tier and terms at purchase.
3. Devil May Cry 5
Best for expressive character-action combat
Devil May Cry 5 is the purest combat specialist here. Its three playable characters use radically different weapons and tools, and the system rewards enemy knowledge, aerial control, parries, cancels, weapon switching and stylish improvisation.
The linear campaign is less exploratory than the open-world entries, and the deepest systems demand practice rather than button-mashing. The base game is excellent value; choose the Deluxe version with Vergil when the price difference is small and you specifically want another advanced moveset. It is comparatively friendly to older PCs, though official Steam requirements remain the final reference.
4. Hades II
Best for short, repeatable sessions
Hades II makes repeated attempts its central structure. Fast combat, changing boons, weapons, characters and narrative developments ensure that failure still advances experimentation and story.
It suits a ten-minute session or an extended evening, but repetition is unavoidable by design. Players who want one fixed campaign may prefer Devil May Cry 5 or DOOM. Check the current Steam listing on the day you buy: development status and included content can change, so do not assume older Early Access wording remains current.

- HERO Gaming Sensor: Next generation HERO mouse sensor delivers precision tracking up to 25600 DPI with zero smoothing, filtering or acceleration
- 11 programmable buttons and dual mode hyper-fast scroll wheel: The Logitech wired gaming mouse gives you fully customizable control over your gameplay
- Adjustable weights: Match your playing style. Arrange up to five 3.6 g weights for a personalized weight and balance configuration
- LIGHTSYNC technology: Logitech G LIGHTSYNC technology provides fully customizable RGB lighting that can also synchronize with your gaming (requires Logitech Gaming Software)
- Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback
5. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Best for precision melee mastery
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice teaches one demanding combat language: deflect attacks, break posture, answer perilous moves and maintain pressure. Its focused design produces some of the clearest mastery in any action game.
There is little build customization to soften a fight, so progress can stop until the timing clicks. Stealth, vertical movement and excellent bosses add variety, but this is not the easiest first Souls-like. Choose it when you want to learn a strict sword system deeply, not when you want extensive RPG alternatives.
6. Helldivers 2
Best for friends and chaotic co-op
Helldivers 2 turns four-player missions into risk management: friendly fire, limited reinforcements, extraction pressure and orbital strikes create stories that rarely go as planned.

It requires online play and is much less compelling as a solitary purchase than the campaign games above. Matchmaking works, but a regular squad makes the tactical and comic chaos more rewarding. Live-service balance, mission content and progression can change, so review the current Steam page and update notes before buying.
7. Monster Hunter Wilds
Best for long-term hunting progression
Monster Hunter Wilds treats every large creature as a combat puzzle. Weapon choice, preparation, positioning, stamina, crafting and reading monster behavior matter more than simply reacting quickly.
Rank #3
- Next-gen 12,000 DPI HERO optical sensor delivers unrivaled gaming performance, accuracy and power efficiency
- Advanced LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming mouse for super-fast 1 ms response time and faster than wired performance
- Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery
- Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
- Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
Its hunt-and-craft loop supports solo play and especially rewarding co-op, but missions and preparation take longer than in most action games. PC performance has been a significant concern in coverage, so check the current Steam requirements, recent patches and user reports before purchase. Players seeking a compact, tightly authored campaign should look elsewhere.
8. Black Myth: Wukong
Best for cinematic mythological action
Black Myth: Wukong combines staff combat, transformations and demanding boss encounters with a relatively directed action-RPG progression. Its Chinese mythology setting and visual presentation are major attractions.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIt is Souls-like-adjacent rather than a strict Souls game: build freedom, exploration and pacing differ from Elden Ring and Sekiro. Some encounters and areas are less even than the best sections, and high visual settings can be demanding, so match the Steam requirements to your GPU and CPU.
9. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
Best for mech combat and build tuning
Armored Core VI makes equipment part of the action itself. Fast melee machines, heavy artillery platforms, missile builds and hybrids all move and fight differently, while short missions, multiple endings and New Game Plus encourage replay.
The mission-based structure is not an open world, and certain bosses strongly reward particular configurations. Dense customization menus can overwhelm new players, but the game is more approachable once its parts and ranges make sense. A controller is recommended, and official Steam requirements are the best guide for lower-end systems.

10. Cyberpunk 2077
Best for open-world guns, blades and hacking
Cyberpunk 2077 offers the broadest combat sandbox here: firearms, blades, cyberware, stealth, quickhacks, mobility abilities and hybrid builds all work within a large first-person open world.
Quest writing and character work are strong, while side activities vary more in quality and the RPG systems can obscure the shooting. Phantom Liberty adds substantial content; buy the Ultimate Edition when its price is sensible, otherwise the base game remains worthwhile on sale. High-end settings are demanding, and first-person combat will not satisfy players seeking third-person melee.

For an offline solo game
Choose Elden Ring for freedom, DOOM: The Dark Ages for shooting, Devil May Cry 5 for combos, Sekiro for timing, Armored Core VI for customization or Cyberpunk 2077 for story-driven open-world play. Helldivers 2 requires online access.
For the best combat
Start with Devil May Cry 5, Sekiro, DOOM: The Dark Ages or Armored Core VI. These games focus more directly on mastery than on collecting a huge map.
For newcomers to demanding action games
Elden Ring offers the most ways to adjust difficulty through exploration, summons and builds. Black Myth: Wukong is more directed. Pick Sekiro only if strict timing is specifically appealing.

For friends
Helldivers 2 is the best short-session co-op choice; Monster Hunter Wilds is better for a long-term hunt-and-upgrade commitment. Elden Ring’s multiplayer is supplementary rather than a conventional four-player campaign.
For a lower-end PC
Check exact hardware rather than trusting a broad label. Hades II, Devil May Cry 5 and Sekiro are sensible places to investigate, while Monster Hunter Wilds, Black Myth: Wukong, DOOM: The Dark Ages and high settings in Cyberpunk 2077 deserve particular scrutiny. An SSD and current drivers are advisable for modern releases.
Honorable mentions
- Resident Evil 4: superb action-horror, but its horror focus narrows the audience.
- God of War and Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut: excellent action-adventure campaigns, though less combat-specialized than this list.
- Nioh 2 and Lies of P: outstanding Souls-like alternatives that overlap heavily with higher-ranked choices.
- Remnant II: strong co-op gunplay, but a narrower campaign structure.
- Titanfall 2 and DOOM Eternal: still excellent shooters; the newer DOOM is the current single-player recommendation.
- Warframe and Path of Exile 2: deep evolving services whose live progression makes direct comparison less tidy.
Buying and performance checklist
- Compare your CPU and GPU with the current official requirements, especially for DOOM: The Dark Ages, Monster Hunter Wilds, Black Myth: Wukong and Cyberpunk 2077.
- Check the exact storefront, region, edition and subscription tier; prices, bundles and Game Pass availability change.
- Confirm whether DLC is meaningful: Shadow of the Erdtree and Phantom Liberty add substantial content, while some Deluxe extras are mainly cosmetic.
- For a demanding release, read recent patch notes and user reviews and understand the store’s current refund policy before installing.
- A controller is generally preferable for the melee-focused games; keyboard and mouse remain especially natural for first-person shooters.
