Alexa games run mainly as Skills: voice-controlled experiences you can launch on a compatible Echo, though some need to be enabled first. For a screen-free adventure, try a branching story or guessing game; an Echo Show can add visual prompts when a Skill supports them. The ten picks below are useful starting points, not a live-confirmed ranking: availability, commands, device support, and prices can change by country. Check the US Alexa Skills catalog before choosing one.
How to choose an Alexa game
The picks are grouped by the kind of play they offer rather than by an unverified score. Most of the named games come from older coverage, so their current listing, invocation phrase, player count, screen support, and monetization have not been confirmed here. Treat the details below as descriptions of the games, not guarantees that a Skill is still available.
- Want a story? Start with The Magic Door or Earplay.
- Want a puzzle? Try Escape the Room or Dungeon Adventure.
- Want a quick group activity? Look for Would You Rather for Family or a currently listed trivia Skill.
- Want minimal setup? Try a 20 Questions-style game, if available in your catalog.
Alexa Skills are voice applications, not games preinstalled on every Echo. Amazon says Skills can run on Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and other compatible Alexa-enabled devices; compatibility and visual features depend on the Skill and device. Amazon’s Alexa Skills FAQ explains device compatibility. Echo Show may help when a Skill supplies visual cards or other on-screen content, but do not assume a screen is required unless its listing says so.

4. Dungeon Adventure — best for fantasy role-playing
What it is: A voice-delivered, text-adventure-style RPG with character creation, inventory, combat, buying and selling items, treasure, and progression, according to older coverage. It is better suited to a player who wants a sustained adventure than to a party looking for a fast round.

6. A current trivia or quiz Skill — best for quiz fans
What it is: Pick a currently listed quiz that matches your group, such as general knowledge, geography, music, television, or children’s trivia. Older lists mention games including Pointless, Tenable, True or False, Geography Trivia, and Harry Potter Quiz, but an older recommendation does not establish that a Skill is still active. Tech Advisor’s family-game list is a historical source for candidates, not proof of current availability.

7. 20 Questions — best for a zero-material guessing game
What it is: Alexa asks yes-or-no questions to identify an object you have in mind. The simple format works for a quick demonstration, solo play, or taking turns with children. It needs no cards or game pieces if the relevant game is available.
Players, screen, setup, and cost: The format is naturally suited to one thinker or a group guessing together, but current player count, screen support, whether it is built in or requires a Skill, and cost are not verified. Replayability: Choose a different object each round. Consider: Unusual or abstract answers can stump the game, and inconsistent yes/no answers make guessing harder.

8. Akinator Safari — best for animal guessing
What it is: A yes-or-no guessing game focused on animals, which can make the concept approachable for younger players. It overlaps with 20 Questions, but the narrower subject provides an easy starting point for animal fans.

Replayability: Repeating and remembering orders provides the central challenge. Consider: Check child-profile permissions and purchasing settings before play.

10. Earplay — best for interactive audio stories
What it is: Interactive audio drama with branching narrative, closer to a story experience than a conventional quiz or party game. Older descriptions characterize it as interactive radio drama; see TechNorms’ historical Alexa games list and the MashTips list.

Replayability: Branching stories may reward different choices. Consider: Review each story’s content for age suitability before children listen.

Exact Alexa app labels can vary by app version and user experience. Amazon’s developer documentation describes the standard route and a separate route for Alexa+ users: Amazon’s Skill testing overview.
- Standard Alexa app: Open the Alexa app, open the menu, tap Skills and Games, find the Skill, open its listing, then tap Enable to use.
- Alexa+: Open Alexa+ Store, then choose Browse Alexa Skills and Games and find the Skill.
- Launch it: Say “Alexa, open [exact Skill name]” or use the invocation phrase on its listing. “Play” or “start” may work for some Skills, but phrases are not universal.
Before enabling, check the listing for supported country and language, device or screen requirements, player guidance, content notes, and any charge or in-skill purchase disclosure.

Are Alexa games free?
Not necessarily. Amazon supports free and paid Skills, subscriptions, one-time purchases, and in-skill purchases. For games, paid add-ons can include hints, extra lives, expansions, or premium features, as described in Amazon’s paid Skills overview and in-skill purchase FAQ. The cost of the ten candidates above has not been verified; read the live listing rather than assuming that an old article’s free-to-play claim still applies.
What to do if a game will not launch
The Skill cannot be found
Search by its exact title and, if shown, its developer or publisher. Catalogs vary by country and language, and a Skill can be renamed, removed, or restricted. If it is missing, choose a currently listed game in the same category rather than relying on an old third-party page as evidence that it is still available.
Alexa opens the wrong game or misunderstands an answer
- Use “Alexa, open [exact Skill name]” rather than a shortened or generic title.
- Let Alexa finish the prompt before answering; have one person speak at a time and move closer to the device if needed.
- Ask for a repeat only if that Skill supports it. Do not assume every game recognizes “help,” “pause,” or “quit.”
- If the game loses its place, restart it; whether progress is saved depends on the Skill.
A child profile cannot access it, or the game offers a purchase
Amazon documents controls for kid Skills and purchasing. For Amazon Kids, its documented management route is Alexa app > Settings > Amazon Kids > child profile > Add Content > Alexa Skills, where a Skill can be toggled on or off; see Amazon Kids Skill management help. Review voice-purchasing settings and the Skill’s content before letting a child play. In-skill purchases can apply to game features as well as other digital content.
The game seems to need a screen
Check the listing’s supported devices and features. Echo Show can display Skill-provided content when supported, and Amazon describes how Skills can add home-screen content in its multimodal content documentation. A visual feature may improve a game without being a requirement; do not infer compatibility from the Echo Show name alone.
Choosing an Echo for games
An audio-first guessing game, quiz, or story can be a good fit for a screen-free Echo speaker. A standard Echo Show is more useful if the specific games you choose offer visual clues, cards, or score displays. Amazon says Skills also work on compatible third-party Alexa-enabled devices, though device-specific behavior can vary; check Amazon’s compatibility FAQ and the Skill listing before deciding.
Why a game on an old list may not work now
Alexa Skills are maintained by their developers and can disappear, change names, alter invocation phrases, or differ between regional catalogs. The frequently copied MashTips list first appeared in 2020 and was republished with a January 2023 date; it is useful for discovering ideas, not for confirming present-day availability, cost, or commands.
