There was no single best handheld in 2022. Buy the Nintendo Switch OLED for the strongest all-purpose console, the Steam Deck for portable PC gaming, the Switch Lite for inexpensive handheld Nintendo gaming, or the Analogue Pocket for original Game Boy-family cartridges. Retro enthusiasts should look at the AYN Odin, Retroid Pocket 2+, or Miyoo Mini, while the Playdate and AYANEO Air serve unusually specific tastes.
Historical note: this guide reflects prices, availability, software, and storefronts as they stood in 2022. Later products such as Steam Deck OLED, newer Retroid models, ROG Ally, Legion Go, and Nintendo Switch 2 are deliberately excluded.
Quick answers
| Handheld | Best for | Typical U.S. price in 2022 | Setup | TV support | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch OLED | Best overall console | $349.99 MSRP | Easy | Yes | Older hardware and costly first-party games |
| Steam Deck | Portable Steam gaming | From $399 | Moderate | With a hub or dock | Large, heavy, and game compatibility varies |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | Handheld-only Nintendo gaming | $199.99 MSRP | Easy | No | Some games need separate controllers |
| AYN Odin | Midrange Android emulation | About $199–$287 | Enthusiast | Depending on setup | Variable emulation and support |
| Analogue Pocket | Original retro cartridges | About $219.99 | Easy with cartridges | With optional Dock | Expensive and library-specific |
| Playdate | Original indie games | $179 in 2022 | Easy | No | Not a general-purpose console |
| Retroid Pocket 2+ | Budget retro gaming | About $99 | Enthusiast | Limited | Small controls and configuration work |
| Anbernic RG552 | Large-screen retro gaming | About $220–$230 | Enthusiast | Limited | Bulky for a retro handheld |
| Miyoo Mini | True pocketability | About $60–$70 | Enthusiast | No | Small, fragile, and limited to older systems |
| AYANEO Air | Compact Windows gaming | Several hundred dollars | Moderate to difficult | With accessories | High price and short runtime under load |
These are category winners, not a universal performance ranking. A Steam Deck, Switch OLED, Miyoo Mini, and Playdate all have screens and controls, but they sell fundamentally different gaming experiences.
What counts as a handheld gaming console?
This list covers dedicated devices with an integrated display and controls: traditional consoles, portable gaming PCs, Android and Linux retro systems, FPGA cartridge hardware, and distinctive systems such as Playdate. It excludes phone controller attachments, cloud-only services, unreleased crowdfunding projects, and used legacy hardware as primary recommendations.

The 10 best handhelds of 2022
1. Nintendo Switch OLED: best overall
2022 price: $349.99 MSRP.
Setup: Easy.
Best for: Families, Nintendo fans, first-time buyers, and anyone wanting one system for handheld and TV play.
The Switch OLED was the safest all-purpose recommendation. Its brighter, higher-contrast OLED display improved handheld play, while the dock retained the regular Switch experience. Its biggest advantage was Nintendo’s exclusive library: Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and a deep selection of local multiplayer games.
Nintendo says the OLED model is compatible with the Switch game library. That does not mean every game has identical accessory or handheld behavior, but it makes the device the broadest mainstream choice. See Nintendo’s official Switch comparison.
- Strengths: Excellent exclusive library, TV and handheld flexibility, strong multiplayer support, easy setup.
- Weaknesses: It is not a portable PC, hardware performance remained in the same broad generation as the standard Switch, and games and accessories could be expensive.
Buy it if: you want one uncomplicated console that does nearly everything a mainstream handheld buyer expects. Skip it if: your library is primarily on Steam or you want high-end emulation.
2. Steam Deck: best for portable PC gaming
2022 price: $399 for the 64GB eMMC model, with more expensive 256GB and 512GB versions.
Setup: Moderate.
Best for: Steam users, PC gamers, and indie enthusiasts.
The Steam Deck was a portable PC presented through a console-like interface. It offered access to a large Steam library, desktop mode, expandable storage, and more freedom than a closed console. Its value was particularly strong among 2022 gaming PCs.
It was not pocket-sized. The Deck was substantially larger and heavier than a Switch Lite and belonged in a backpack, travel bag, hotel room, or couch setup. Battery life also depended heavily on the game: lightweight 2D titles could behave very differently from demanding 3D games.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not interpret “plays PC games” as “plays every PC game perfectly.” SteamOS compatibility, anti-cheat systems, launchers, control layouts, and per-game performance all mattered. Valve’s Steam Deck page is the authoritative starting point, but its later configurations and prices should not be back-projected into a 2022 comparison.
- Strengths: Large Steam library, excellent performance for its price, desktop mode, expandable storage, and a more controller-friendly experience than many Windows handhelds.
- Weaknesses: Size, variable battery life, compatibility problems in some games, and slower eMMC storage in the entry model.
Buy it if: your games are on Steam and you accept occasional troubleshooting. Skip it if: you need a genuinely pocketable device, Nintendo exclusives, or completely predictable console behavior.
3. Nintendo Switch Lite: best value for handheld-only Nintendo gaming
2022 price: $199.99 MSRP.
Setup: Easy.
Best for: Solo players, children, commuters, and buyers who will never use a TV.
The Switch Lite was the smallest and least expensive mainstream route into Nintendo’s handheld library. Its integrated controls and single-body design made it convenient to carry, but it could not dock to a television.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Nintendo specifies that Switch Lite supports games offering handheld mode. Games without handheld-mode support may require separate compatible controllers and a way to charge them. Some motion-control and multiplayer experiences are consequently less convenient than on the OLED model.
- Strengths: Low price, compact size, integrated controls, and access to a large portion of the Switch library.
- Weaknesses: No TV mode, smaller screen, accessory requirements for some games, and less convenient repair if the integrated controls develop a fault.
Buy it if: you want inexpensive Nintendo gaming and know you will play handheld-only. Skip it if: you want TV play or regularly play games designed around detachable controllers.

4. AYN Odin: best midrange Android retro handheld
2022 price: approximately $199–$287, depending on model and storage.
Setup: Enthusiast-oriented.
Best for: Android gaming, streaming, and more demanding emulation than low-cost retro devices.
The Odin offered a larger screen and a higher performance ceiling than basic Linux retro handhelds. Android also made it useful for mobile games, streaming, and emulator experimentation. It was a compelling middle ground for buyers who wanted more than 8-bit and 16-bit systems without moving to a full Windows PC.
Emulation results were not universal. PSP, Dreamcast, GameCube, and PS2-era software could vary by emulator, settings, and individual game. “Can launch” and “runs well” were different claims.
- Strengths: Comfortable form factor, Android flexibility, better performance than entry-level retro devices.
- Weaknesses: Configuration work, variable manufacturer support and delivery, and inconsistent higher-end emulation.
Buy it if: you enjoy tuning Android and emulators. Skip it if: you need major-retailer support, simple returns, or guaranteed per-game compatibility.
5. Analogue Pocket: best premium cartridge-based retro handheld
2022 price: approximately $219.99 before accessories and shipping.
Setup: Easy with original cartridges.
Best for: Collectors and owners of Game Boy-family cartridges.
The Analogue Pocket was designed around original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Analogue says it supports more than 2,780 of those cartridges out of the box, with adapters available for systems including Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine, and Atari Lynx. Its 3.5-inch, 1600×1440 display and FPGA hardware were central to its appeal.
This was not a modern console replacement. Its value came from the quality of the display, controls, cartridge experience, and hardware-based approach. The optional Dock added HDTV output and support for wireless 8BitDo controllers and wired USB controllers; details are available on Analogue’s official page.
- Strengths: Excellent display, original cartridge support, premium controls, and a strong collector-focused design.
- Weaknesses: High cost for a specialized library, additional adapter expenses, and limited relevance if you do not own cartridges.
Buy it if: you already own compatible cartridges or specifically value original hardware behavior. Skip it if: you want modern games or a low-cost all-purpose emulator.
6. Playdate: best for original indie design
2022 price: $179 in its original 2022 pricing context.
Setup: Easy.
Best for: Indie fans, design enthusiasts, curious players, and gift buyers.
Playdate was deliberately unlike the other devices here. It used a reflective black-and-white display, Wi-Fi, and a side-mounted crank controller for games designed specifically around the hardware. Panic’s Season One package delivered 24 games, released at two per week for 12 weeks.

Its appeal was a curated catalog of original ideas and a highly portable form factor. The manufacturer’s current page lists a different price, so that current figure should not be used as the 2022 price.
- Strengths: Unique controls, tiny size, original game design, and immediate access to Season One content.
- Weaknesses: Small specialized screen, limited catalog compared with mainstream platforms, and no AAA, Nintendo, or Steam library.
Buy it if: the crank and experimental games are the point. Skip it if: you want one device to replace a conventional console.
7. Retroid Pocket 2+: best budget Android retro handheld
2022 price: approximately $99.
Setup: Enthusiast-oriented.
Best for: Budget-conscious retro players who enjoy configuring software.
The Retroid Pocket 2+ delivered unusual flexibility for its price. Android supported emulation, streaming, and mobile games, while its compact design made it more capable than the simplest retro devices.

The trade-off was time. Buyers often needed to prepare storage, configure emulators and controls, organize legally obtained software, and troubleshoot individual systems. It was a hobbyist product, not a plug-and-play licensed game console.
- Strengths: Low cost, flexible Android platform, and better versatility than basic retro handhelds.
- Weaknesses: Small controls, inconsistent higher-end emulation, and possible international shipping or support friction.
Buy it if: you want maximum flexibility for little money and do not mind tinkering. Skip it if: you expect a polished, ready-to-play experience.
8. Anbernic RG552: best large-screen retro option
2022 price: approximately $220–$230.
Setup: Enthusiast-oriented.
Best for: Retro players who prioritize screen size and physical comfort.
The RG552 used a larger, higher-resolution screen than many inexpensive retro handhelds and offered Linux/Android dual-boot positioning for enthusiasts. Its size could make older games easier to view and controls more comfortable for some players.

- Strengths: Large display, comfortable retro presentation, and enthusiast-oriented software flexibility.
- Weaknesses: Less pocketable, less efficient, and less compelling for demanding systems than the AYN Odin.
Buy it if: small retro screens strain your eyes or hands. Skip it if: you want a pocket device or modern-console performance.
9. Miyoo Mini: best genuinely pocketable retro handheld
2022 price: roughly $60–$70, depending on seller, bundle, and availability.
Setup: Enthusiast-oriented.
Best for: Short sessions, travel, and players who value pocketability above all else.
The Miyoo Mini was small enough to make the word “portable” meaningful in a way larger handheld PCs were not. It suited older systems such as Game Boy, NES, SNES, Genesis, arcade, and much of the PlayStation-era library when configured appropriately.
- Strengths: Truly pocketable size, low price, and a strong fit for older games.
- Weaknesses: Small controls and screen, limited newer-system performance, fragile-feeling construction, and frequent stock shortages or reseller markups.
Buy it if: you want a device for quick retro sessions that can actually fit in a pocket. Skip it if: you want PSP, GameCube, PS2, Steam, or modern console games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems10. AYANEO Air: best compact Windows handheld
2022 price: several hundred dollars, varying by processor, memory, storage, region, and sales channel.
Setup: Moderate to difficult.
Best for: Enthusiasts prioritizing a small Windows PC over value.
The AYANEO Air was substantially smaller than the Steam Deck and used Windows, giving buyers access to PC storefronts and launchers beyond Steam. Its premium hardware and OLED display appealed to people who wanted a compact PC handheld rather than a console-like appliance.
- Strengths: Small PC form factor, Windows compatibility, and premium display options.
- Weaknesses: High price, Windows friction on a controller-only device, constrained battery capacity, and configuration differences across the product line.
Buy it if: size and Windows access matter more than value. Skip it if: you want the simplest or longest-lasting portable PC experience.

Switch OLED vs Steam Deck
Choose Switch OLED for Nintendo exclusives, local multiplayer, straightforward setup, and reliable TV-plus-handheld use. Choose Steam Deck for a Steam library, PC indies, desktop access, and experimentation. The Deck was more powerful and flexible in PC terms, but the Switch had the exclusive software and simpler ownership model. Neither was objectively “better” for the other platform’s library.

Pay for the OLED model if you want TV play, a larger and better handheld display, or easier multiplayer. Choose Lite if you will play alone and handheld-only. The Lite’s lower price was meaningful, but it was not a cheaper dockable Switch.
Steam Deck vs AYANEO Air
The Steam Deck was the value choice and offered a more cohesive handheld interface. The AYANEO Air was the size-first choice, with Windows compatibility and a smaller body at a substantially higher and more variable price. Pick the Air only if its compactness solves a real problem.

AYN Odin vs Retroid Pocket 2+
The Retroid was the budget pick for older systems and tinkering. The Odin offered more performance headroom, a larger form factor, and better prospects for demanding emulation, but neither guaranteed perfect GameCube or PS2 results. Choose based on the systems you actually intend to play, not the emulator’s ability to launch a title.
Analogue Pocket vs Miyoo Mini
Choose Analogue Pocket for original cartridges, premium display quality, and collector appeal. Choose Miyoo Mini for low-cost digital retro access, pocketability, and quick sessions. The Pocket was not simply a more powerful Miyoo Mini; they represented different ownership models.
Recommended Free Tools
Playdate vs an all-purpose handheld
Playdate made sense only if its crank-based original games appealed to you. A Switch, Steam Deck, or retro handheld offered a much broader library, but none reproduced Playdate’s deliberately constrained design.
Portability, battery life, and setup
“Portable” has three useful meanings:
- Pocketable: Miyoo Mini, Playdate, and some Retroid models.
- Bag-portable: Switch Lite, Switch OLED, AYN Odin, and Analogue Pocket.
- Portable but bulky: Steam Deck and AYANEO Air, especially with a charger and case.
Battery life should not be reduced to one ranking. Runtime changes with game complexity, brightness, wireless radios, frame-rate limits, emulator settings, operating system, and battery condition. Switch models generally delivered more predictable console-style behavior. Steam Deck and Windows handhelds could drain quickly under demanding loads, while retro devices usually lasted longer with older systems but varied in firmware and battery quality. Playdate’s manufacturer lists up to eight hours of active use; actual results depend on brightness, Wi-Fi, and game behavior.
Setup difficulty is equally important:
- Easy: Switch OLED, Switch Lite, Playdate, and Analogue Pocket with cartridges.
- Moderate: Steam Deck and AYANEO Air.
- Enthusiast: Odin, Retroid Pocket 2+, RG552, and Miyoo Mini.
Retro devices may require a quality microSD card, card reader, firmware or operating-system setup, emulator configuration, controller mapping, and legally obtained game files. Manufacturers or sellers advertising emulation do not automatically make every bundled ROM or BIOS file legal. Use only software you are legally entitled to use and do not assume an included game collection is licensed.
Accessories and hidden costs
Switch
Budget for a microSD card, case, and screen protector. Standard and OLED Switch buyers may also want extra Joy-Con or a Pro Controller. Switch Lite cannot dock, so do not buy dock-related accessories for it. Some Lite games need separate compatible controllers and a charging solution.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

A microSD card is the most obvious addition. A USB-C hub or dock helps with an external display and peripherals, while a suitable USB-C power bank can extend travel sessions. The included case reduces the need for an immediate case purchase. An SSD upgrade was possible but required checking model compatibility and accepting the technical risk.
Retro handhelds
Use a reputable microSD card, keep backups, and consider a case. Some enthusiasts separate operating-system and game storage across two cards. Add the cost of your time: setup and troubleshooting were part of the product experience.
Analogue Pocket and Playdate
Pocket owners may want cartridge adapters, a Dock, and protection. Playdate owners could buy the optional Cover, but it was not required for operation. Both systems assumed a more specific library model than Nintendo or Steam.
For direct-order products from AYN, Retroid, Anbernic, and AYANEO, the advertised price might not include international shipping, taxes, duties, or accessories. Delivery estimates, returns, replacement parts, and warranty service could also be less convenient than with Nintendo or Valve. Availability mattered in 2022: the best device on paper was not necessarily the best device you could receive before a particular date.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to choose
- Start with your library. Nintendo games point to Switch; Steam games point to Deck; cartridges point to Pocket; older retro systems point to Miyoo or Retroid.
- Decide whether you want a console or a hobby. Switch and Playdate are simple. Retro Android/Linux systems reward configuration.
- Measure portability honestly. If it must fit in a pocket, eliminate the Steam Deck and most Windows handhelds.
- Price the complete setup. Include storage, controllers, docks, adapters, shipping, tax, and legally acquired software.
- Check compatibility at the game level. “Supported” does not mean every game runs well, especially for PC and demanding emulation.
- Value support and availability. A slightly less exciting device from a major platform may be a better purchase than an unavailable or difficult-to-return import.
A reasonable general weighting is game-library fit at 30%, ease of use and software support at 20%, portability and ergonomics at 15%, intended performance at 15%, battery life at 10%, and price and availability at 10%. Change those weights for your priorities: a Nintendo buyer should emphasize exclusives and simplicity, while a retro enthusiast should emphasize screen, controls, firmware, and emulation.
Alternatives
A used PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS could be appealing for buyers specifically seeking their exclusive libraries, but they were not included as primary recommendations because condition, battery health, software availability, and seller quality varied substantially. Used hardware can be excellent value when the exact library matters, but it deserves a separate condition-and-support assessment rather than a direct comparison with new 2022 products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do retro handhelds come with games?
Some sellers bundled software, but a bundle was not proof that the games were licensed. Treat the hardware and the software rights as separate issues, and use only legally obtained ROMs, BIOS files, or personal dumps where applicable.
How much storage should I budget for?
A reputable microSD card is useful for most retro handhelds and for Steam Deck expansion. Modern PC games can consume tens of gigabytes, so Steam Deck buyers should pay particular attention to the internal-storage configuration rather than relying only on a small card.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Which handheld was most pocketable in 2022?
The Miyoo Mini was the clearest choice for true pocketability. Playdate and some Retroid models were also small, while Switch models were generally better suited to a bag or jacket pocket.
Should I buy a used PS Vita or 3DS instead?
Consider one if its exclusive library is your priority and you can verify condition, battery health, software access, and seller support. They were alternatives for specific libraries, not universal replacements for the devices in this guide.
