The right setup depends on whether you prioritize damage, movement, durability, drops, or a specific mob type. What enchantments can go on a Minecraft spear?
In Java Edition 1.21.11, spears can receive the same enchantments as swords except Sweeping Edge, and they can also receive the spear-exclusive Lunge. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes state: “Spears can be enchanted with the same Enchantments that can be used with Swords except Sweeping Edge.” Do not treat Sweeping Edge as a Java spear option.

These ten choices are ranked by broad usefulness and practical specialization. Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are competing damage specializations: choose one to suit your usual targets rather than expecting all three on one spear.
The 10 best Minecraft spear enchantments
1. Sharpness — best general damage choice
Sharpness is the strongest default pick for a general-purpose spear because it increases weapon damage. It suits players who want one damage enchantment without specializing against a particular mob family. It does not make every Charge attack optimal by itself: Charge damage also depends on spear material, viewing angle, and the movement of both player and target, as described in the Java 1.21.11 notes.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
2. Lunge — best for Jab mobility
Lunge is the spear’s unique movement enchantment, and it works only with Jab. It propels the player horizontally in the direction they are looking; it is not a Charge damage boost. The Minecraft Java Team described the behavior in its Snapshot 25w41a notes: “When doing a Jab attack with Lunge, it propels the player horizontally in the view direction.” That is snapshot documentation; current release guidance comes from the stable-version notes.
In Java 1.21.11, Lunge costs one durability point per use and consumes 1, 2, or 3 hunger points at levels I, II, and III. It requires at least six hunger points and does not work in water or while flying with Elytra. Bedrock 1.21.130 also reports one durability point per use and hunger costs of 1, 2, and 3 by level. See the Bedrock 1.21.130 release notes for that edition’s details.
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
Those values are version-specific. An earlier Java 25w43a snapshot listed different hunger costs—3, 4, and 5—and no durability damage; those were snapshot tuning values, not the later Java 1.21.11 behavior. The 25w43a snapshot notes document that historical change.
3. Mending — best for long-term upkeep
Mending repairs the enchanted item when you collect XP orbs, making it a useful choice for a spear you use regularly. The official enchantment reference describes this repair effect. Its page is a Bedrock creator reference last updated January 30, 2025, so use newer release notes for edition- and version-specific mechanics.
Rank #3
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
4. Unbreaking — general durability support
Unbreaking increases item durability, according to the official enchantment reference. It is a practical upkeep option for frequent spear use, particularly if you do not want Lunge’s use-by-use durability cost to go unaddressed.
5. Looting — for mob drops
Looting increases loot earned from mobs. Choose it when you use the spear for mob farming and value drops more than a specialized damage or control effect.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
6. Fire Aspect — damage with a Bedrock cooking use
Fire Aspect adds situational utility. In Bedrock 1.21.130, animals defeated in one hit by a spear’s Charge attack with Fire Aspect drop cooked food. That specific one-hit Charge interaction is documented in the Bedrock 1.21.130 release notes; do not assume the same exact behavior across editions without a matching release note.
7. Smite — for undead targets
Smite increases damage to undead mobs, making it a better damage specialization than Sharpness when undead are your main targets. Its documented effect appears in the official enchantment reference.

8. Bane of Arthropods — for arthropod targets
Bane of Arthropods increases damage against arthropod-family mobs and applies slowness when they are hit, according to the official enchantment reference. Like Smite, it is a specialist alternative to Sharpness rather than an additional damage enchantment to stack alongside it.
9. Knockback — for creating space
Knockback sends mobs away when hit. That can help create breathing room in a crowded fight, but it may also push a target out of your reach. Choose it when space matters more than keeping enemies close.
10. Curse of Vanishing — a drawback, not a recommendation
Curse of Vanishing makes the item disappear when you die, as stated in the official enchantment reference. In ordinary survival play, that is a cost rather than a benefit. It belongs on this list as a warning about an eligible enchantment, not as a positive spear upgrade; the reviewed sources do not establish a spear-specific competitive use for it.

| What matters most | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Broad combat damage | Sharpness | General weapon-damage increase. |
| Jab movement | Lunge | Propels the player horizontally in the view direction when using Jab. |
| Undead mobs | Smite | Specializes damage against undead. |
| Arthropod-family mobs | Bane of Arthropods | Increases damage and applies slowness on hit. |
| Long-term item upkeep | Mending or Unbreaking | Mending repairs with XP orbs; Unbreaking increases durability. |
| Mob farming | Looting | Increases loot earned from mobs. |
| Making room in a fight | Knockback | Pushes mobs away, at the possible cost of keeping them in reach. |
| Cooking animal drops after a qualifying Charge | Fire Aspect | Bedrock 1.21.130 documents cooked drops when an animal is defeated in one hit by a spear Charge attack with Fire Aspect. |
Use the attack you actually rely on to guide the choice: Lunge applies to Jab, while the documented cooking effect is tied to a qualifying Charge in Bedrock 1.21.130. For Charge damage, material, aim, and player and target velocity also matter, so there is no single enchantment setup that makes every attack best.

Quick Recap
How to build a practical spear setup
- Pick one damage specialization. Use Sharpness for broad use, Smite for undead, or Bane of Arthropods for arthropod-family targets.
- Add utility that matches your play. Choose Lunge if you use Jab and want its movement effect; choose Looting for mob drops or Knockback when creating distance is useful.
- Decide how much upkeep matters. Mending repairs from XP orbs, while Unbreaking increases durability. Lunge also spends durability each time it is used in Java 1.21.11 and Bedrock 1.21.130.
- Check edition and version for specific interactions. In particular, the one-hit Charge cooking effect is stated in Bedrock 1.21.130 notes, while Lunge costs and restrictions should be matched to the version you play.
- Reject unwanted drawbacks. Curse of Vanishing causes the spear to disappear on death; do not mistake its presence among eligible enchantments for a recommendation.
