There are not ten equally current Android emulators. Azahar is the clear first choice for Nintendo 3DS, while melonDS Android, DraStic (if you can verify a trustworthy current source), and RetroArch with the melonDS DS core cover most Nintendo DS needs. Several other names are historical projects, cores, or experimental builds rather than separate modern recommendations.
Choose by the console your game belongs to: Nintendo DS/DSi and Nintendo 3DS are different systems, and a DS emulator cannot run 3DS software.

1. Azahar: best Nintendo 3DS emulator for Android
Azahar is the practical default for Android 3DS emulation. It was formed from the merger of Lime3DS and PabloMK7’s Citra fork, is open source, and provides official Android distribution. The project lists Android 10 or later, 64-bit Android, Snapdragon 835-or-better-class performance, and OpenGL ES 3.2 or Vulkan 1.1 support. These are baseline requirements, not a promise that every game will run at full speed.

A Google Play listing is available at Google Play; the listing reported an update on June 29, 2026, while the latest GitHub release visible in the supplied results was Azahar 2125.1.2 on May 14, 2026. The Play build is easiest for most people. Azahar says its Vanilla build is technically superior because of its file-management method, which Google Play does not permit; use the documented GitHub or Obtainium route rather than an APK mirror.

- Best for: Modern Android phones and handhelds running 3DS software.
- Watch for: GPU-driver bugs, shader stutter, thermal throttling, resolution-scale load and game-specific defects.
- Compatibility: Check the project’s list at citra.azahar-emu.org/wiki/compatibility-list/; reports can be incomplete or device-specific.
2. melonDS Android: best open-source Nintendo DS emulator
melonDS Android is the strongest general-purpose open-source standalone choice for Nintendo DS and DSi. It has official Google Play and GitHub distribution and is intended for legally obtained games. Its Android README says performance should be solid on 64-bit flagship devices with JIT and threaded rendering enabled.
Install from melonds.org/download or the official port at github.com/rafaelvcaetano/melonDS-android. The README identifies unfinished areas including local multiplayer, DSi SD-card support, customizable button skins and additional display filters. It also documents a layout editor, useful for portrait play and touchscreen-heavy games.
3. DraStic: legacy high-performance DS option
DraStic has long been associated with excellent Nintendo DS performance on modest Android hardware and mature DS-focused controls. That makes it a sensible legacy option for an older phone or handheld—if you can verify a legitimate, current source for the app.

The available evidence does not establish a current official product page, Android version, price or confirmed 2026 Google Play availability. Do not rely on “DraStic Gold,” cracked packages or download portals. A third-party Switch wrapper describes the proprietary emulator and the need for legally obtained games, but it is not an official DraStic product page: github.com/NaGaa9/DrasticDS_nx.

4. RetroArch with melonDS DS: best all-in-one setup
RetroArch suits experienced users who want DS/DSi alongside many other systems. Install RetroArch from retroarch.com, then install the newer melonDS DS core where available. Libretro describes this core at docs.libretro.com/library/melonds_ds and recommends it over the older melonDS core.
Expect more configuration: core installation, system-directory paths, Android file permissions, playlists and controller remapping. Manual scanning is useful for ROM hacks and homebrew. Depending on the mode, the core documents files such as bios7.bin, bios9.bin and DSi firmware/NAND files. RetroArch netplay is a frontend feature; it is not proof that original Nintendo wireless or online services work.
5. Citra Android: historical 3DS reference
Citra’s archived Android announcement at citra.azahar-emu.org/entry/announcing-citra-android matters when you encounter old setup guides or an existing installation. It is not the current first choice. Azahar’s project history explains that development continued through the merger that created Azahar, so new users should normally migrate rather than hunt for old Citra APKs.

6. Lime3DS: superseded Citra continuation
Lime3DS was a Citra-based continuation with Android builds and is documented at github.com/ShizCalev/Lime3DS. It was one of the projects that merged into Azahar. Treat Lime3DS APKs and guides as historical unless they point to the current Azahar project.

7. PabloMK7’s Citra fork: Azahar predecessor
PabloMK7’s fork is another predecessor represented in Azahar’s merger history. It may explain a filename, save directory or forum recommendation, but there is no reason to rank it as a separate modern Android recommendation when Azahar is the maintained successor path.
8. Panda3DS: experimental, not a dependable Android pick
Panda3DS describes itself as a work-in-progress high-level 3DS emulator. Its FAQ at panda3ds.com/faq.html raises Android availability as a question, so do not assume that a random Android package is official or usable. See the project repository at github.com/wheremyfoodat/panda3DS and verify an official Android release before testing.
9. Legacy melonDS core in RetroArch
Libretro still documents the older melonDS core at docs.libretro.com/library/melonds, but describes it as obsolete or unmaintained relative to melonDS DS. Use it only when an existing configuration requires it; do not treat it as a separate modern emulator.
10. Unofficial Citra, Lime3DS and Azahar APK forks
Names such as MMJ, Plus and Enhanced can refer to experimental patches, but they have no single authoritative release or support channel. Consider one only when you can verify a source repository, release history, code provenance and malware scan. Avoid “Citra Gold,” “premium” APKs, bundled ROM installers and pages with redirect chains or unexplained SMS, contacts, accessibility or device-admin permissions.

How to choose between DS and 3DS emulators
- 3DS game on a modern Android device: Azahar.
- DS/DSi and open-source standalone app: melonDS Android.
- Older hardware: DraStic only after confirming a trustworthy current source.
- Many systems in one interface: RetroArch with melonDS DS.
- Old Citra or Lime3DS install: back up saves and evaluate migration to Azahar.
- Experimental 3DS testing: Panda3DS only with a confirmed official Android build.
Android hardware and performance expectations
For Azahar, the published baseline is Android 10+, 64-bit Android, Snapdragon 835-or-better-class hardware, OpenGL ES 3.2 or Vulkan 1.1, 2 GB RAM minimum and 4 GB recommended. A newer midrange phone may still lose speed because of drivers, heat or game-specific behavior. Lower internal resolution, disable expensive filters, test Vulkan and OpenGL ES, close background apps and let an overheated phone cool before judging performance.
DS emulation is generally lighter and more mature. However, “boots” is not the same as “playable”: evaluate speed in demanding areas, audio, rendering, touch, microphone, motion, saves and wireless behavior on your exact device and build.

- Use Google Play or the project’s official repository. For Azahar Vanilla, follow the documented GitHub/Obtainium route at the official repository.
- Create dedicated ROM and save-data folders, and grant access only to the files or directory you selected.
- Test one known-good, legally dumped game before importing a library.
- Back up ordinary in-game saves before changing emulator builds. Save states can be fragile across versions.
- Set a practical screen layout. Portrait is often best for two-screen DS play; landscape and a physical controller suit button-heavy games, but a controller cannot replace every touchscreen, microphone or motion input.
- In RetroArch, install melonDS DS, configure the system directory when needed, then manually scan ROM hacks and homebrew if automatic scanning misses them.
BIOS, firmware and game files
There is no universal BIOS rule. Some standalone emulators include replacements or run ordinary DS software without separately supplied files; DSi modes, firmware functions and particular games may need additional system files. RetroArch’s melonDS DS documentation lists requirements by mode. 3DS compatibility may require files dumped from your own console. Do not download BIOS, keys, firmware or decrypted system files from third-party repositories.

Troubleshooting common failures
Black screen or crash
- Try another game to separate a bad dump from an emulator problem.
- Switch Vulkan and OpenGL ES where the emulator offers both.
- Disable resolution scaling, texture enhancements and filters.
- In RetroArch, verify the core and system-directory files.
- Check the relevant compatibility list and test a clean profile with a backed-up save.
Slow speed or audio crackle
- Lower internal resolution and disable costly enhancements.
- Enable JIT and threaded rendering where supported.
- Turn off battery-saver throttling and close background apps.
- Retest after cooling the device; sustained heat can reduce clock speeds.
Missing saves
Confirm the save directory and Android storage permission, then restore the backup made before switching builds. Do not overwrite the only copy while experimenting.
Touchscreen-heavy games
Use portrait layouts, adjustable touch overlays and screen rotation when available. Physical controls improve buttons but do not replace touch, microphone or motion requirements.
Legal and safety basics
An emulator reproduces console behavior; the legal position depends on the emulator, your jurisdiction and how games, firmware, keys and BIOS files were obtained. Use games you legally own and make personal backups where local law permits. The Citra compatibility archive directs users to dump required files from their own 3DS, and melonDS describes itself as intended for legally obtained games: Citra/Azahar compatibility guidance and melonDS. Never use ROM or BIOS download sites as an installation source.
