The term covers more than literal neon tubes—it can also mean saturated luminous colors, emissive surfaces, signs, and colored lighting. The best examples make that brightness part of how a player reads or feels a world.
What is neon used for in video games?
Here are ten practical uses, from direct gameplay cues to broader art direction. Some examples use literal signs; others rely on emissive materials or color-coded elements. Those approaches can overlap, but they are not the same lighting technique.
1. Guide players through a level
A consistent color convention can make a route legible without a map marker. In Neon White, director Ben Esposito explains: “We had a simple visual language for communicating with players on where to go. Doors are always red and always on the main path, green ivy means you’re going in the right direction, etc.” (Game Developer interview.)
The cue works because the color means something consistently and appears in a level designed to support quick reading. Esposito says the intended path needed to be clear at a glance; the team found a clean, low-detail look with negative space effective. Color cannot compensate for a cluttered route on its own.

2. Signal gameplay information
Color can distinguish categories of information—such as a route cue, hazard, or interface item—when the player learns a stable visual convention. The key is not simply making everything bright: competing colors make it harder to tell which signal matters.
That challenge also applies to interface design. A NieR:Automata UI designer described finding a palette through trial and error: “Through sheer trial and error, I found a readable set of colors that were distinct enough to tell apart, while staying consistent with the design.” (PlatinumGames.)
3. Pull attention toward a focal point
A bright sign or emissive surface can attract the eye and suggest where to look next. This is a design application of the route cues in Neon White and the illuminated signage and surfaces described by the team behind The Ascent, not a universal rule that every glowing object signals an objective. Designers need to make the intended focal point clear through placement, contrast, and context.

4. Set a mood
Saturated glow, fog, and contrast can make a space feel dreamlike, energetic, lonely, or uncanny. The effect depends on how the elements work together: a small pool of colored light in a dark environment feels different from a brightly lit, crowded street.
Unity principal art director Veselin Efremov described developing a small environment after liking “the mood that the lighting and the fog were creating.” His project used emissive boxes and atmospheric density to build a cyberpunk scene; the example demonstrates a mood-making approach, not a claim that every neon-lit scene will produce the same feeling. (Unity, published October 3, 2017.)
5. Establish a world’s identity
A concentrated visual language can quickly tell players what kind of place they have entered. In Neon White, director Ben Esposito connected its setting and look: “We picked Heaven because it supported the religious theme as well as the utopian-inspired Y2K aesthetic at the heart of the game.” (Game Developer interview.)

Hotta Studio has described NTE: Neverness to Everness as pursuing a stylized, surrealist modern urban aesthetic. In either case, color and luminous details help make an art direction recognizable, but they work alongside setting, architecture, and other visual choices. (Unreal Engine interview.)
6. Make a city feel busy and inhabited
Signs, machines, screens, and other emissive surfaces can give an urban scene layers of visual activity. The The Ascent team described using many neon signs, machines, and emissive surfaces, along with animated billboards and TVs. Such details can suggest businesses, infrastructure, and activity beyond the player’s immediate path. (Unreal Engine interview.)
7. Use reflections to connect light and weather
Colored signs can spill onto wet streets and nearby surfaces, making rain part of the scene’s appearance rather than merely a weather effect. The The Ascent team discussed animated signage, rain, wet surfaces, and reflections, as well as combining baked and dynamic lighting. Reflections extend the visible effect of a light source, while the surface material and lighting setup determine how that effect appears.

8. Separate forms from the background
Colored lighting can help distinguish a character or object from its surroundings, but the outline still needs to read. Hotta Studio has described emphasizing contours and silhouettes in NTE animations while avoiding complex overlap or occlusion. That is a broader readability lesson: a colored glow may help separate forms, but it should not obscure the shapes players need to recognize. (Unreal Engine interview.)
9. Tie interface elements to the game’s visual identity
A restrained palette can make menus and game-world graphics feel like parts of the same design. PlatinumGames’ account of NieR:Automata says its UI scheme carries into the hacking minigame and world-map models. The account also describes limiting and tuning colors to keep categories distinguishable. This is a use for luminous or vivid color only when the interface remains readable; brightness by itself does not create visual unity.
10. Make intense color stand out through restraint
If every surface glows, glow stops distinguishing anything. Reserving the strongest colors for selected routes, signs, or key spaces can create contrast and give a setting a clearer visual hierarchy. This is a design inference from developers’ emphasis on negative space, consistent cues, and readable palettes—not a specific rule attributed to any one interviewee. Darkness and less saturated areas are part of what lets a luminous accent register.

How can neon improve readability without overwhelming a game?
Start with the player’s task, then decide whether a luminous cue helps with it. Neon White shows that quick navigation depends on both a consistent visual language and level layout: its director says the team separated platforming, shooting, and card-management demands rather than asking players to juggle them all at once. In the UI, NieR:Automata illustrates the separate work of finding colors that are distinct enough to read while fitting the design.
- Give each important color a consistent meaning instead of changing its meaning from scene to scene.
- Use placement, shape, labels, or repeated patterns alongside color so the cue is not carried by hue alone. This is general design advice, not a specific accessibility standard established by the cited interviews.
- Check that characters, routes, and important objects remain recognizable against bright backgrounds and colored effects.
- Leave quieter areas in the composition so the most important lights have room to stand out.
What are the lighting and performance trade-offs?
An emissive surface looks bright, but that does not mean it automatically illuminates everything around it. A game may combine emissive materials, baked lighting, dynamic lighting, fog, and reflection treatments to achieve its look; these techniques have different roles. The The Ascent team said performance considerations shaped its mix of baked and dynamic lighting. That is a project-specific account, not a universal estimate of neon’s cost.
Platform targets matter, too. Hotta Studio has identified performance and battery life as goals for the mobile version of NTE: Neverness to Everness. The project interview concerns development across PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile, so its goals should not be treated as a timeless statement about a finished product’s performance. (Unreal Engine interview.)
