- You need IP masking for streaming or public Wi-Fi.
- You do not require inbound connections or port forwarding.
Limitations
- NordVPN does not offer port forwarding, a problem for some hosting and peer-to-peer scenarios.
- A large network cannot guarantee good peering with your game’s data center.
- Promotional pricing and renewal costs must be checked at checkout.
Visit NordVPN. Current port-forwarding context is covered by Tom’s Guide’s NordVPN review.
2. Surfshark — best value and many devices
Surfshark is the strongest value choice for families because it allows unlimited simultaneous connections. That means one subscription can cover PCs, phones and tablets, not unlimited bandwidth: every device still shares your internet connection, router CPU and the VPN server.
Choose it if
- Your household has many devices.
- You prioritize a low introductory cost.
- You want WireGuard and a conventional, easy-to-use app.
Limitations
- Console play normally requires a VPN router, travel router or computer connection sharing.
- Introductory monthly equivalents may rise at renewal.
- Unlimited connections do not guarantee stable multiplayer performance when many devices are active.
Visit Surfshark. TechRadar’s current gaming comparison discusses its value positioning at TechRadar.
3. ExpressVPN — best for console and router simplicity
ExpressVPN is particularly practical for PS5 and Xbox households because its router software and Aircove hardware are designed to put devices without native VPN apps behind one encrypted connection. Its Lightway protocol is intended to reconnect quickly and remain stable.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose it if
- You want a guided whole-home setup rather than manual console configuration.
- You need device groups or the ability to exclude selected devices from the VPN.
- You value convenience more than the lowest subscription price.
Limitations
- Router encryption can reduce throughput on underpowered hardware.
- A router purchase and subscription are poor value for a single PC gamer.
- The app’s device allowance and the number of devices behind a configured router are different concepts.
See ExpressVPN’s gaming page, its router and console documentation and Aircove and VPN-router information.
4. Proton VPN — best for privacy-conscious gamers
Proton VPN combines a strong privacy reputation with WireGuard and its VPN Accelerator technology. Proton says paid users can access Plus servers in more than 140 countries; availability and plan limits should be confirmed when you subscribe. Its free tier can be useful for a low-commitment test, but free servers may offer less choice and less consistent peak-time performance.
Rank #2
- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
Choose it if
- Privacy and a broader privacy ecosystem matter as much as gaming.
- You travel and need to reach familiar game regions.
- You want to compare a free plan before paying.
Limitations
- Privacy features do not guarantee the shortest route.
- Free-tier location and performance limits may be unsuitable for competitive play.
- Vendor performance claims still need comparison with your own baseline.
See Proton VPN’s gaming guidance. A VPN can change your apparent region, but it does not override account, licensing or publisher rules.
5. Private Internet Access — best for customization and unlimited connections
Private Internet Access (PIA) offers unlimited simultaneous connections, split tunneling and extensive protocol controls. It is a good fit when you want only the game routed through the VPN while other traffic uses your normal connection.

- You are comfortable adjusting protocols, split tunneling and router settings.
- You have a large household.
- You need to investigate port-forwarding options or advanced NAT behavior.
Price and limitations
PIA’s gaming page showed $11.95 per month, a one-year offer billed at $39.95 ($3.33 monthly equivalent), and three years plus three extra months billed at $79 ($2.03 monthly equivalent), with a 30-day money-back guarantee. These were promotional U.S. prices displayed around August 2026, not permanent rates.
- Router throughput depends heavily on CPU, firmware and protocol.
- Gaming and DDoS language on PIA’s site is first-party marketing, not a guarantee.
- Advanced settings can be confusing for beginners.
See PIA’s gaming page, console guidance and router documentation. PIA also publishes a router-speed caveat.
6. CyberGhost — best for beginners
CyberGhost has straightforward apps, WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 support, broad location choice and router instructions. Its interface is approachable for a first VPN, though a large server count does not prove low latency to your particular game.
Price and device terms
The official page showed $12.99 monthly, or a two-year term plus two extra months billed at $41.34 ($1.59 monthly equivalent). The long-term plan carried a 45-day refund period; monthly subscriptions carried 14 days. Up to seven simultaneous devices were stated. These figures were observed around August 2026.

Limitations
- The monthly plan is expensive compared with promotional long-term offers.
- Seven devices may be restrictive for a large household.
- Router performance and game routing still require local testing.
See CyberGhost and its router information.
7. Mullvad — best for simple privacy and flat pricing
Mullvad appeals to players who dislike multi-year discounts and complicated renewal pricing. It supports WireGuard and has a strong privacy-focused reputation. Current reviews describe it as excellent when a suitable nearby server exists, but its network and location footprint are smaller than those of the largest rivals.
Choose it if
- You want straightforward pricing and a privacy-first service.
- You need a short-term subscription rather than a promotional multi-year contract.
- Your target game region is well served by Mullvad.
Limitations
- Current review coverage says Mullvad does not offer port forwarding.
- Fewer locations can mean fewer alternatives when a route is congested.
- It may be less convenient for households wanting many devices or bundled features.
See Mullvad and Tom’s Guide’s review.
8. IPVanish — best for technically minded users
IPVanish is a broad-device, settings-oriented alternative with a strong speed reputation in current deal and comparison coverage. It deserves consideration when you want more controls than a minimalist app provides, but it has less independent gaming-specific evidence than the leading picks.
Limitations
- Current coverage notes possible frustrations with its kill-switch experience.
- Promotional pricing can hide renewal costs.
- Confirm platform, router and game-specific performance before committing.
See IPVanish and current deal context at Tom’s Guide.
9. Hotspot Shield — conditional speed alternative
Hotspot Shield appears in current general VPN rankings, but the available evidence does not establish it as a better gaming choice than the first eight. Consider it only after checking repeatable latency, jitter, packet loss, platform support, privacy documentation and price for your location. See Hotspot Shield and Security.org’s general ranking.

10. Windscribe or PureVPN — reserve slot, not an automatic recommendation
The tenth position should be filled only by the service that passes current hands-on checks for gaming latency, stability, console setup, port-forwarding status, privacy evidence, renewal price and refund terms. If neither does, publishing nine well-supported recommendations is more honest than treating an untested tenth provider as equal. Official sites are Windscribe and PureVPN.
Do VPNs reduce gaming ping?
Usually, no. Encryption and an additional server normally add work and distance. A VPN can nevertheless improve a bad ISP route when the ordinary path is congested, inefficient or traffic-managed. The relevant distance is from the VPN exit server to the game server, not simply from you to the nearest VPN location.
Rank #4
- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
Test three routes
- Record your normal, non-VPN ping, jitter, packet loss and match stability.
- Try a VPN server in your own city or region.
- Try a VPN server near the game’s data center, then one or two alternatives.
Keep the VPN enabled only when repeated tests show a better or more stable result for that game and region. Download speed alone is a poor gaming metric; consistency, jitter and packet loss matter more.
Can a VPN prevent DDoS attacks?
A VPN masks your residential IP by presenting the VPN server’s address, which can make a direct attack on your home connection harder if the attacker never learned your real IP. It is not DDoS-proof. An attacker with the original address can still target it, and the VPN provider’s server can itself be overloaded or rate-limited. A VPN also cannot fix a compromised account, leaked address, insecure router or attack against the game server.
Professional esports players and high-profile streamers may need a managed network or dedicated anti-DDoS service rather than a consumer VPN. Security.org explains IP masking as a key reason gamers use VPNs at its gamer guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a VPN on PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck
Most consoles and Steam Deck do not provide the same native VPN-app path as Windows, macOS, Android or iOS. PIA specifically says Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck need router-based configuration or another supported method.
Preferred setup order
- VPN-compatible router: covers consoles and other devices on the network.
- VPN travel router: useful in hotels, tournaments and temporary setups.
- Windows or Mac connection sharing: turns a computer into a VPN gateway.
- Smart DNS: useful for DNS-based location handling, but it is not an encrypted VPN tunnel and does not provide the same IP masking or DDoS benefits.
Router encryption can reduce throughput depending on hardware, firmware, Wi-Fi conditions and protocol. ExpressVPN’s router documentation and CyberGhost’s router page describe console coverage; PIA’s console guide explains alternatives.
Which VPN protocol is best for gaming?
- WireGuard: the usual first choice for low overhead and quick reconnection.
- NordLynx: NordVPN’s WireGuard-based option.
- Lightway: ExpressVPN’s proprietary protocol, designed for fast, reliable connections.
- OpenVPN UDP: a compatibility fallback when WireGuard-style protocols fail.
Protocol branding is not proof of lower ping. Compare connection time, latency, jitter, reconnection behavior, battery use on handhelds and stability during a long session. Proton describes WireGuard and VPN Accelerator at its gaming page; ExpressVPN describes Lightway at its gaming page.
Best Value
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
When a VPN makes gaming worse
- The exit server is distant or congested.
- Peering to the game network is poor.
- Your router cannot encrypt traffic fast enough.
- Wi-Fi interference is mistaken for VPN latency.
- Matchmaking assigns a farther server.
- Split tunneling is misconfigured.
- The VPN changes NAT behavior or blocks voice, launcher or game traffic.
If the VPN causes disconnects, stricter NAT or worse packet loss, disconnect it for that title unless IP protection is essential and you can find a better route.
NAT, hosting and port forwarding
Some games and consoles need permissive NAT for hosting or peer-to-peer features. A VPN can produce a stricter NAT type or prevent inbound connections. Port forwarding can help in specific designs, but it is not a universal performance feature. NordVPN and Mullvad are poor fits when inbound connections are a firm requirement; check current availability and plan limits before choosing PIA or another provider.
VPNs, region changes and game rules
A VPN can change the apparent connection region, but it does not guarantee access to a title, DLC, storefront or early launch. Account, payment, matchmaking, licensing and publisher terms still apply. Do not use a VPN to cheat, evade bans, exploit regional pricing or bypass licensing restrictions. A region change can also trigger fraud checks or unusual-login verification.
How to test a VPN before keeping it
- Use wired Ethernet for the baseline where possible.
- Record at least three sessions at different times of day.
- Test a competitive FPS, a fighting or racing game and a large multiplayer title if you play them.
- Compare no VPN, a nearby VPN server and a server near the game’s data center.
- Record median and range for ping, jitter, packet loss, download and upload speed, connection time, matchmaking, voice chat, disconnects and NAT type.
- Repeat separately on a PC and a console or handheld if console play is important.
- Try the provider’s fast protocol first, then OpenVPN UDP if compatibility requires it.
Do not claim a VPN reduces ping unless it beats the non-VPN baseline repeatedly under identified conditions. Results depend on your city, ISP, game, platform, protocol, server region and time of day. Testing guidance is also covered by Top10VPN.

Scenario-based picks
- Most PC gamers: NordVPN, unless testing shows Surfshark or another provider has a better route.
- Many household devices: Surfshark or PIA, while monitoring shared bandwidth.
- PS5 or Xbox household: ExpressVPN with a compatible router or Aircove.
- Privacy first: Proton VPN or Mullvad, provided a suitable game-region server exists.
- Advanced routing and split tunneling: PIA.
- First VPN: CyberGhost for its simpler interface and router documentation.
- Cloud gaming: test against the cloud provider’s actual region; a fast download rate cannot compensate for unstable input latency.
- Port forwarding or hosting: exclude NordVPN and Mullvad unless your design does not need inbound connections; verify current support elsewhere.
Free VPNs and low-commitment testing
A free plan is reasonable for testing only when it has transparent ownership and logging information, no crippling data cap, usable server choice and acceptable peak-time stability. Free services commonly offer fewer locations or lower capacity, making them a poor default for competitive gaming. Use a refund period or a free tier to compare against your baseline, not as proof that the service is suitable for every match.
