Make combat resources work for you
1. Build Focus, then spend it when there’s an opening
Light attacks, well-timed dodges, and charging a heavy attack can build Focus. Spend it to strengthen a heavy strike, but don’t force the attack into an enemy’s active moves. Wait for a genuine opening; PC Gamer’s guide also suggests using Immobilize before a heavy attack to punish a target while it is held (PC Gamer, August 20, 2024).
2. Dodge to avoid damage and help build Focus
Xbox Wire editor Mike Nelson notes that the Destined One has no basic block or parry ability, so dodging and repositioning are central defensive tools. A Perfect Dodge can restore some Focus, making timing useful for offense as well as defense. Sprinting can also help you create space or move out of danger (Xbox Wire’s beginner tips).
3. Cast spells when interruption is less likely
Some spell animations leave you vulnerable. If an enemy hits you before a cast completes, the spell may go on cooldown without taking effect, according to PC Gamer’s guide. Create distance, wait until a boss is distracted or recovering, and avoid spending a spell while an attack is about to connect. Spell resources and cooldowns make timing more valuable than casting at every opportunity.

Choose upgrades that support your playstyle
4. Treat your early Sparks as a flexible foundation
Xbox Wire’s Mike Nelson recommends putting early Sparks into survivability and stamina fundamentals before upgrading Smash Stance, which worked especially well for him. That is one author’s recommendation, not a universal best build. If another stance or approach suits you better, adjust your upgrades to support it.
5. Find an early transformation
Defeating Guangzhi in the Forest of Wolves can unlock Red Tides, an early transformation described by PC Gamer. Transformations temporarily give you another form and moveset, offering a different way to approach a fight. Treat the form as another tool rather than a guaranteed win: choosing when to use it still matters.

6. Match equipment and resources to your plan
Weapons, armor set bonuses, Spirits, curios, and drink effects can complement one another. Think about the kind of advantage you want before spending resources: more staying power, stronger Focus attacks, control that creates safer openings, or synergies between equipment effects. Will—the game’s currency for buying and crafting equipment—can be collected from enemies, breakable pots, gold pieces, and Will o’ Wisps, according to PC Gamer.
Explore for rewards beyond the main route
7. Check side paths for meditation spots
Chapter-one meditation spots are away from the main path, and Xbox Wire says each one rewards a Spark. PC Gamer also identifies meditation as a source of Sparks. Take a moment to look around when a route branches; a short detour can support character progression.

8. Challenge optional Yaoguai Chiefs for possible Spirits
Xbox Wire recommends seeking out optional Yaoguai Chiefs. Defeating some can yield a Spirit attack that you can summon later. These side encounters may be difficult, so consider whether you are ready before committing; the reward is an additional combat option, not a promise that every fight will be easy.
9. Mild exploration spoiler: ring the three opening-area bells
Ringing all three bells in the opening area opens a hidden area. Completing that area awards the Fireproof Mantle, which grants burn immunity, according to Xbox Wire. If you want to discover hidden routes entirely on your own, skip this tip; otherwise, it points to a worthwhile early-game detour.
Keep healing options current
10. Visit the Shen Monkey to improve your gourd and drinks
PC Gamer says Shen Monkey can upgrade the gourd with Luojia Fragrant Vines and improve drink potency with Awaken Wine Worms. When you find these materials, check whether you can use them to improve your healing setup. Medicines are another option: they can counter banes or provide buffs, so choose one that fits the challenge ahead.
